Make a lasting impact on future generations and an inner London community
Based in Islington, the Central Foundation Boys School is a popular, high-performing, voluntary-aided comprehensive school for boys aged from 11 to 16, with a successful co-educational Sixth Form. The Central Foundation Schools For London supports the Boys School and appoints the majority of the governors. We are working together to appoint a new Foundation Governor to join the governing body this autumn.
The successful candidate will join a governing body comprising 18 members. It is critical that the successful candidate has a keen interest in the school and is prepared to play an active part in the governing body’s work to help improve outcomes for pupils. As well as being members of the governing body itself, members are expected to participate in one additional sub-committee: Teaching & Learning; Pay & Personnel; Finance; or Premises/Health & Safety. Members are also expected to act as a link governor for one faculty. Link governors act as liaison between the governing body and a particular faculty, including meeting with relevant teachers and visiting the department from time to time. In addition, there are a range of other ad hoc circumstances where governor involvement is necessary.
The governing body plays a key role in the school’s governance and is responsible for, or involved in, many significant decisions concerning the school. The governing body has 3 core functions. They:
- Ensure clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction of our school;
- Hold the executive leaders to account for the educational performance of our school and its pupils, and the effective and efficient performance management of staff; and
- Oversee the financial performance of our school and make sure its money is well spent.
The successful candidate will join the governing body this autumn. The members come from a wide range of backgrounds and professions and includes members appointed by the staff of the school, parents and the Islington Local Authority. A majority of the governors are appointed by the Central Foundation Schools of London, an Educational Charity which supports two schools in inner London, ourselves and the Central Foundation Girls School in Tower Hamlets. This appointment will be a joint appointment by the Foundation and the school governing body.
At this time, we are particularly interested in individuals who have had experience in law, human resources or are experienced at a senior leadership level in a large company, charity or public sector organisation. We encourage applications from all members of society, regardless of background, gender, ethnicity, disability, or age.

We are pleased to be offering an exciting new one-year attachment to The Old Vic Theatre Trust Board exclusively to one Lambeth resident aged 18–30.
The Lambeth Baylis Trustee provides a unique opportunity for a young person to discover how a Board of Trustees in an arts organisation works. Across the UK, less than 1.2% of Trustees are under 30 and 0.5% are aged 18–24.
The role aims to provide a specific youth viewpoint in relation to The Old Vic’s activities and strategy.
What is a Board of Trustees?
A Board of Trustees offers guidance and expertise to senior management. At The Old Vic, this means the Artistic Director, Executive Director and the Senior Leadership & Management Teams.
What is the time commitment?
Board meetings, of which you would be expected to attend at least three during your year, are normally held four times a year. In addition, you would be invited to attend theatre performances and fundraising events and have informal meetings with relevant members of the Management team. Attendance at these events is a key part of the role, particularly if you are to get the most out of the experience. Board memberships are voluntary, unpaid positions, however for the Lambeth Baylis Trustee, expenses will be covered.
What would make a good Baylis Trustee?
The Old Vic is looking for people who want to try something new, who are keen to make an impact on The Old Vic’s activities and have any of the following attributes:
- commitment and enthusiasm
- good, independent judgement
- creative thinking
- willingness to speak their mind
- effectively working as a member of a team
- demonstrating selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership
- a commitment to equal opportunities and diversity
We are particularly keen to hear from people who have had limited or no access to Arts opportunities in the past and are committed to identifying and resolving barriers which may ordinarily exclude young people from accessing theatre.
No experience is necessary.
What support will be provided?
The Lambeth Baylis Trustee will undergo an onboarding programme to learn about the theatre and the work we do, as well as sessions to understand how a Board works before the first Board meeting.
The Lambeth Baylis Trustee will be appointed a “buddy” (Euan Borland, Education and Community Director), have opportunities to attend Old Vic events, shadow members of The Old Vic Management team and undergo any relevant training throughout the programme.
Are there any specific criteria?
The candidate must be a Lambeth resident aged between 18–30.
Why is this a Lambeth-only scheme?
The Old Vic offers a range of youth engagement projects for residents of boroughs across London. This project has been specifically funded by Lambeth, our home borough, and as such is restricted to its residents
The client requests no contact from agencies or media sales.
We are looking for an experienced finance professional with an understanding of charity accounting procedures and governance to join our Board of Trustees*. You will help ensure we provide the best possible future for our beneficiaries in the next phase of their lives.
We are a Charity with secure funding in place for the lifetime of our beneficiaries. A recent Independent Governance review reflected the high level of skills and experience of our Board and excellent standards of governance.

Their physical disabilities include limb damage, hearing and visual impairment, brain and sensory impairment and damage to internal organs. They are a remarkable group of people, who have achieved a great deal despite often living with extreme levels of disability.
Our beneficiaries have very complex and varied needs which are increasing as they age. The Trustees provide effective governance and oversight to ensure the Trust understands these needs and has adequate and well-managed resources to meet them.
You will bring the following skills and experience to the role:
- Professional accountancy qualification and strong technical accounting skills.
- Understanding of the principles of investment management.
- Experience of working in a senior financial position
- Good current knowledge of charity accounting processes and reporting requirements.
- Sound current knowledge of Charity Law and Charity Governance frameworks.
- Well-developed interpersonal skills and an ability to develop positive relationships with individuals from a wide range of backgrounds.
Experience of monitoring investment performance is desirable but not essential. However, you should be willing to learn new skills and be able to devote approximately 15 to 20 days per annum to the Trust – within this time specifically be available to attend three full day Board meetings, at least four half-day Finance Committee meetings and one beneficiary event each year.
This is a voluntary role, but reasonable expenses incurred will be reimbursed.
We particularly welcome applications from the BAME community and people living with disabilities.
Closing date: 9am on Monday 24 June 2024
Date for interview: 22 July 2024 (in Central London)
*Following a restructuring exercise in January 2018, your formal title will be a Director of the Thalidomide Trust Company. However, you will operate as a charitable trustee and will be governed by the Charity Commission.
