Volunteer roles for the Animal sector in west midlands

Enjoy driving and want to help animals along the way?

We need a reliable driver to collect and deliver donations between our rescue centre in Whitminster and our charity shop in Stroud.

What you’ll be doing:

• Collecting, loading and moving donations
• Driving between sites to drop off and pick up items
• Unloading at each location and helping store items safely

What you’ll need:

• A full UK driving licence and a safe, confident driving style
• Physically fit – able to lift and carry donations
• Happy to drive our transit van or use your own vehicle

Can you be the friendly face of our busy reception? We are looking for volunteers to support our reception staff during opening hours, but especially on alternate Saturdays

What you'll be doing:

• Booking in boarding animals 
• Answering the phone and dealing with enquiries
• Sorting donations, and helping keep the reception shop tidy and well stocked

What you'll need

• Confident and helpful when talking to people, with a friendly telephone manner
• Well organised and able to multitask
• Some IT and admin experience would be helpful

Volunteering can take place between 9am-5pm Monday-Sunday, but we are especially looking for help on alternate Saturdays. 

Do you love quizzes, entertaining people and raising money for animals? We’re looking for volunteers to run our regular pub quizzes and keep the fun going.

Quizzes are held at:

• The Barn Owl, Quedgeley – 6pm on the last Sunday of the month
• The Old Crown Inn, Uley – 7pm on the fourth Wednesday of the month

What you’ll be doing: Choose from two volunteer roles at each quiz:

1. Host – Read out the questions, keep scores, announce winners and keep things lively.
2. Welcome Lead – Sign in teams, sell raffle tickets and help answer any queries.

What you’ll need:

• Confident public speaking and a clear, engaging style
• Friendly and welcoming manner
• Organised, with cash-handling experience useful

A bit about this role

As a charity we are able to help thousands of cats each year thanks to the generous donations we receive from members of the public. Our fundraising volunteers use their passion for cats and people to raise the vital funds needed to help more cats and kittens in need. As a fundraising volunteer we want to support you to fundraise in whatever way suits you best – whether that’s organising a fundraising event, fundraising online, promoting fundraising activities on social media, completing administration or supporting the development of new fundraising ideas! Whatever your skill set, this could be the role for you!

What can you expect to be doing?

This is a really flexible role – you can choose what you’d like to get involved with:

• Face-to-face fundraising – organising or helping with fundraising events, running supermarket collections and fundraising stands, monitoring collection tins
• Online fundraising – setting up online appeals, increasing social media engagement to maximise funds raised
• Marketing – spreading the word about our fundraising activities, for example on social media and with the local press  
• Championing our work – getting involved with developing new fundraising ideas and increasing community engagement

Support, guidance and keeping you safe

At Cats Protection we believe our volunteers should be happy and confident in their roles. We provide support and guidance from our National Cat Centre and through our regional and local volunteer groups and teams. We offer engaging online and face-to-face training, expenses and have policies and processes to help volunteers get the most out of their time with us.

The role

We are looking for individuals who share our commitment to improving animal health to join our Board as lay trustees. Lay trustees (ie, trustees who are not vets or vet nurses) play a crucial role in ensuring that the Board benefits from a diverse range of perspectives and skills. 

We are particularly seeking people who have experience of: 

• Fundraising and/or leadership in the charity sector, or 

• Business development and entrepreneurship, or 

• Commercial leadership experience, with a strong understanding of business operations and strategic management, or 

• Quality Improvement in human healthcare

This is a voluntary position, offering a unique opportunity to contribute to the strategic direction and governance of a dynamic charity.

Key responsibilities 

• Attend and actively participate in three Board meetings each year and additional committee meetings as required. 

• Provide independent oversight and constructive challenge to the Board’s decision-making processes. 

• Ensure the charity adheres to its mission, values and legal obligations.

Time expectation 

Our lost and found volunteers usually spend between 2 to 3 hours per week in this role, which is flexible and can be shared by more than one volunteer if needed.

We are looking for someone who’s great with people to support our centre with a variety of tasks. This will include meeting and greeting customers to our site, as well as helping out with administrative tasks and using our IT systems to support the rehoming of our pets. This role does not involve direct contact with our pets, but our Volunteer Reception Assistants provide vital support to our team so we can ultimately rehome more pets. If you enjoy meeting people and have some experience in a customer care or reception role, we’d love to hear from you.

We aim to give our customers a great experience every time they visit, call or email us and we need someone who can help us achieve this at our busiest times. Our rehoming centre often needs some support with administrative tasks so our busy animal care teams can prioritise spending more time caring for the pets in our care.

Do you want to make a difference to vulnerable pets lives? Would you like to join a team providing practical support to keep pets with their owners in times of need? We are looking for volunteers to help support our Pet Food Bank activity. You'll use your attention to detail, organisational and communication skills to help our food banks provide support to the pets that need it most.

Our Pet Food Banks provide practical support to pet owners during financial crises, by distributing donated pet food via food banks in the local community. Our food banks can be the key to helping owners to keep their much-loved pets. Our Donations Assistants help manage the incoming donations and preparation of food for distribution. All this adds up to keeping more pets with their families. We would love you to join us and help us help more pets and people in need.

What you will be doing

• Organising donations as they come in and regular stock taking to keep track of the food we have available
• Checking use by dates on donated pet food
• Preparing packages of pet food and pet items to be given out to our pet food bank clients or to send to other local food banks for distribution
• Liaising with external food banks and organising deliveries of pet food to meet demand
• Using excel and our database to record the activity of the food bank
• Ensuring any stock overflow is collected for distribution to other Blue Cross coordinated food banks
• You can choose to combine this role with any of our other pet food bank roles if they are also available at your chosen location

Our Cat welfare team leaders have the important role of coordinating, encouraging and supporting teams of fosterer volunteers and cat care volunteers. They help make sure volunteers with direct cat care roles are happy and confident and provide advice and guidance when needed. What we need from you

You’ll be:

• Volunteering alongside colleagues including the branch coordinator/team leader, Cat Welfare team, branch development manager and Vet team to ensure that cat care policies, procedures and standards are applied
• Support fosterers to follow cat welfare policies and procedures
• Acting as the main point of contact within the branch for cat welfare and ensuring that welfare updates are shared and implemented effectively
• Supporting the branch by ensuring that accurate and up to date records of all cats helped are maintained, using specified systems
• Attending relevant volunteer training sessions and encouraging other volunteers to do likewise
• With the other volunteers, recruit, induct and support all branch fosterers and cat care volunteers
• Represent the branch at relevant meetings
• Play an active part in the branch committee, being part of the branch team leading on cat adoption information and updates
• Collaborating with the cat adoption team leader to ensure the highest standards of cat care are applied in line with our policies and procedures

Time expectation

The time expectation for this role will vary depending on the number of volunteers and cats in care. Our cat welfare team leaders usually spend between 10 to 12 hours per week in this role which is flexible and can be shared by more than one volunteer if needed.
