We hope to provide our placement students with an insight into the daily internal workings of the world’s largest humanitarian organisation. The student will have access to relevant in-house training and development opportunities during their placement. There also may be ad hoc opportunities to get involved in other areas of work where appropriate. You will be responsible for achieving specific work objectives, agreed with you, in a set length of time within one of the various departments across the UK. As you are recruited to support or complete particular objectives, you will have a real responsibility and place in the department, bringing some of your skills and experience to the role; you will also have the chance to develop workplace skills.

The British Red Cross is a volunteer-led humanitarian organisation that helps people in crisis, whoever and wherever they are. We enable vulnerable people at home and overseas to prepare for and respond to emergencies in their own communities and when the crisis is over, we help people recover and move on with their lives.

Placement Volunteers at the British Red Cross are highly valued for the skills and energy they bring. We aim to provide our placement volunteers with an insight into the daily workings of the world’s largest humanitarian organisation. The successful candidate will have access to relevant in-house training and development opportunities during their placement. There may be some ad hoc opportunities to get involved in other areas of activity.

Your role as a placement volunteer will help make a great contribution to the work of the British Red Cross. You will take responsibility for achieving specific objectives that are agreed with you within one of the various departments across the UK. You will have a real responsibility and place in the department, bringing some of your skills and experience to the role; you will also have the chance to develop workplace skills.

While we don’t offer voluntary internships, we are happy for you to describe yourself as an intern on your CV, if you feel that would be helpful.

HOURS: This placement will be over 21 hours per week; Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Tuesday and Thursday will be in the Sheffield office. The role will involve outreach support in Sheffield City Centre on alternate Wednesdays with some remote working. The volunteering hours are negotiable to balance your needs and what can be achieved in the role.

Bursary Scheme The British Red Cross offers a bursary scheme to those placement volunteers from low-income households. Eligibility will be determined through a separate application process open to all short-listed candidates. All British Red Cross volunteers are entitled to out-of-pocket reasonable expenses.

For this scheme we are defining low-income households as:

• Inside London: Living with family or partner £25,000 or under. Living independently £22.500 or under
• Outside London: Living with family or partner £18,500 or under. Living independently £16,500 or under

Young People and this role Our placement volunteer opportunities are open to people at different stages of their career, aged 15 or above. Whether you’re student, a recent graduate or someone with more experience looking for a career change, we would be happy to hear from you.

Anyone can volunteer with the Red Cross from the age of 15. An individual risk assessment, parental consent and safeguarding considerations will be required for those aged 15 – 17. Due to the nature of the activities specific to this placement opportunity you need to be 18 years or older.

Our Casework volunteers work one-to-one with refugees, asylum seekers and vulnerable migrants at a time which many will find difficult and distressing. We help to make sure people have choices and opportunities available to them to move forward with their lives in a new country. Diversity is something we celebrate. Why we want you

The casework placement volunteer will work one-to-one with vulnerable asylum seekers and refugees to help them access suitable services. It will include but not limited to, undertaking sensitive and comprehensive interviews with service users to assess their needs and agreeing a plan of action with the beneficiary.

What you will be doing

• Support the beneficiary to access other services, for example from the NHS, legal representatives, and Social Services
• Maintaining effective client records using our data capture system including communicating effectively with the Home Office case owner
• Working effectively with interpreters
• Offering onward referral to relevant bodies as appropriate
• Providing one to one support to beneficiaries
• Undertaking sensitive and comprehensive interviews with service users to assess their needs
• Identify and respond appropriately to safeguarding and protection issues with vulnerable clients, including children and vulnerable adults.

The skills you need

• A good communicator and empathetic about the situation and needs of refugees
• Able to use emotional support skills in a calm and responsible manner
• Aware of conflict and migration issues and sensitive to cultural issues, including those relating to gender
• Personally resilient as you may need to deal with difficult or challenging situations
• Understanding of face-to-face client work and/or casework, demonstrating excellent communication and proven listening skills
• Able to speak good English; plus knowledge of a foreign language would be useful (particularly one used in the current local refugee population)
• Able to use emotional support skills in a calm and responsible manner
• Able to keep the beneficiary at the heart of what you do, supporting the Red Cross to understand service user needs and the difference our role makes
• Willing to adhere to BRC Casework Good Practice Standards
• Able to work alone with minimum supervision as well as part of a team
• Willing to uphold the Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and adhere to the Society’s Equal Opportunities Policy
• Willing to complete a criminal record check

Kiplin Hall and Gardens in North Yorkshire is recruiting Trustees to join the friendly and dedicated Board which oversees the management of this intriguing Jacobean house.  The house was built in the 1620s for George Calvert, Secretary of State to James I and founder of the US state of Maryland. A member of the Historic Houses Association, the Hall and Gardens are open to visitors and we welcome over 30,000 visitors each year. We are currently creating a new Welcome Centre with improved retail and catering for our visitors which will open in Spring 2025. . With the support of National Lottery Heritage Fund, we are further enhancing the service and experience offered to visitors, to ensure Kiplin is sustainable and resilient for the future.

We are particularly seeking Trustees with skills and experience in finance, visitor operations, legal and curatorial to help oversee the continued development of the Hall and Gardens.  We are looking to grow our Board of Trustees to help guide us through an exciting period of change and transition. 

Our aim is to develop and broaden the diversity of our Board of Trustees, ensuring we have a variety of perspectives and backgrounds and are particularly interested in receiving local applications. PIP works mainly in the Kensington & Chelsea and Westminster communities to support adults with learning disabilities and autism. Our focus is on teaching and learning life skills so those we work with self-identify as PiP students. Ranging in age from 18 to 92, our average student is around 34 years old.

PiP students have a range of learning disabilities including Down's Syndrome, Fragile X, Autism Spectrum Conditions (ASC), dual diagnosis with mental health problems and/or physical health conditions such as Diabetes and Epilepsy.

As Chair your primary responsibilities will include:

• Chair meetings of the PIP Board of Trustees, providing leadership and support to the CEO including meeting regularly to discuss current issues
• Lead the board in the performance of their roles and scrutiny of PiP’s work 
• Enable trustees to fully engage with their role, board sessions, and the organisation’s work
• Hold the CEO to account for the performance and financial sustainability of the charity and give appropriate support and challenge
• Oversee the strategic direction, financial management & performance of the organisation                              
• Provide leadership for the organisation
• Support in the income generation, communications, and community engagement of the organisation
• Lead on the appointment of trustees and CEO as required and ensure that posts receive appropriate induction, advice, training and information
• Ensure that PIP complies with its governing document, charity law, company law and any other relevant legislation or regulations

PiP is looking for an individual with the following skills and experience:

• Strong leadership skills, with the ability to think strategically and creatively    
• Good communication skills with the ability to inform and engage a wide range of audiences

The Outreach and External Engagement intern will work alongside our Head of Referrals and External Engagement manager, as well as our Partnerships team, to further improve our connections with stakeholders, funders, and referral partners. They will also assist in the organising, marketing and running of our next Open House event.

Our intern will:

· Help to analyse stakeholder survey results and data.

· Create a comms plan to engage all staff in regular stakeholder engagement.

· Create templates of emails and communication for regularly touching base with partners.

· Assist in building relationships with new partners and strengthening relationships with existing partners.

· Lead in the planning and delivery of an Open House event, from start to finish.

This internship will focus on supporting our children’s service which is unique in addressing the needs of our 0 – 12-year-olds who live in challenging circumstances or have experienced trauma in their early lives. Our approach brings us closely together with families to ensure our youngest members achieve personal and social growth and positive change through access to a uniquely nurturing and validating environment.

We are looking for a creative individual to join the children’s service with experience in photography, drama, music, dance/movement or spoken word. Ideally, this individual would have experience working with groups and delivering creative workshops for a therapeutic purpose. Their skills would be highly beneficial to our service as creativity has proven to be a great mechanism to facilitate healing and explore aspects of developmental trauma. Additionally, children who are non-verbal or reluctant to social interactions can participate in creative tasks freely, increasing their confidence. Currently in the team we have skills such as arts and crafts, Lego play and play therapy skills. We are looking for an individual with further creative skills to enhance the creative edge of our service and programming.

Our intern will be:

• Assisting with the research and planning of weekly children’s service evenings.
• Leading and supporting the delivery of the service evenings.
• Collecting outcomes of the service evenings.
• Evaluating programme impact and outcomes and reviewing if changes are needed. 

We are looking for an intern who:

• Is passionate about working with children.
• Has a creative, proactive, and adaptable approach.
• Has skills needed for facilitating groups in photography, drama, music, dance/movement and/or spoken word.
• Is looking to gain work experience in the field of children’s rights, programme development and social care.

Are you the new Chair-designate for Reading Community Learning Centre?

Do you have enthusiasm and skills to cooperatively govern and lead our charity that supports women learners?

You could be the Chair-designate of Reading Community Learning Centre, a charity serving the needs of local refugee, asylum-seeking and migrant women. We stand proudly for equality and women’s rights, and are looking for a woman Chair-designate to take on the role of leading our Board, supported by our outgoing Chair for a handover period of up to 12 months.
Although this is a voluntary position, the provisions of Schedule 9, Part 1, of the Equality Act 2010 effectively apply as they would for our employment of women-only staff.

About us:

Set up in 2007, we are a Charitable Company that helps often-marginalised women to achieve their individual potential, through helping them improve their English, build confidence, make friends, volunteer locally, gain qualifications or secure a job.

In the 2022-23 academic year, 420 women from 36 different countries attended classes at the Centre, and 874 women received information, advice and support, through our charitable spending of around £200k.

About the role

We’re looking for a woman to lead our Board, to work with other trustees and our Centre Manager to shape our future supporting and empowering women.

If you can think and lead strategically, and help us plan long-term, you have the primary skills needed to be our Chair-designate and eventual Chair. Support from our employees is always available, as they will be dealing with the day-to-day running of the organisation.

Experience of committee or similar work, an understanding of cooperative leadership and a strong focus to shape the forward-looking Board, are what we are looking for. You don’t necessarily need prior experience of charity trusteeship, as induction will be provided, plus specialist guidance as a new trustee, including access to external training.

This is a high-profile appointment, with strong commitment to the future of Reading Community Learning Centre an essential quality, and having a good understanding of the value for the women we help. Trustees make the top-level decisions for our charity: our Board includes women with understanding, skills and experience of our support, and we require new trustees to have empathy with our cause. 

We are a charity, not a business, but we apply business principles to governing our organisation. We encourage women from all backgrounds to apply, particularly Black, Asian and minority ethnic women, and those who have previous experience of engaging and working collaboratively with our beneficiaries.

The Board meets online every six weeks, and we ask you for up to sixteen hours per month; this includes all meetings, correspondence, communication, etc.

The legal, casework & advocacy intern will work directly with our adult members providing support in areas such as immigration, housing and benefits.  The internship provides the opportunity to gain high quality work experience relevant to those interested in law, advocacy and social work.  The role is designed to provide active learning in areas of individual support work, legislative frameworks and diverse case management. The intern will work closely with our pro-bono solicitors and immigration advisors from high profile London firms.

Our intern will be:

• Providing advocacy and casework on behalf of adult members, including grant applications, liaising with other professionals supporting our members and writing letters of support
• Contacting councils, social services, the home office and other government agencies
• Booking and preparing members for appointments at Body & Soul’s legal clinics
• Working with the volunteer solicitors providing the pro-bono legal clinics and carrying out follow-up work from the appointments
• Giving 1:1 support to adult members over the phone and face to face, including on the Help Desk at our Tuesday service evenings
• Working closely with staff in other charity organisations and gaining a knowledge of other voluntary organisations to which we can sign post our members

We are looking for an intern who:

• Is passionate, committed and dedicated to supporting vulnerable adults
• Has relevant experience and qualifications
• Has experience supporting diverse populations
• Is looking to gain work experience in the field of law, advocacy or social work

Body & Soul is a charity dedicated to transforming the life-threatening effects of adverse childhood experiences. Whether someone has been neglected or abused, trafficked, attempted suicide or stigmatised because of HIV – we have helped to liberate thousands of people from the trauma that controls them.  Our community provides people of all ages with a wide range of innovative and creative programmes that support physical, mental and emotional health and well-being.  We have developed a ‘whole person’ model of care rooted in a strengths-based approach that nurtures connection, healing and growth. Through building members’ protective factors, we promote and develop resiliency, interrupt latent vulnerability and transform lives.

Mindset is a holistic well-being resource, curated by the community of Body & Soul, offering viewers and participants practical skills to create balance in the everyday. As well as providing existing Body & Soul members tips to manage emotions and wellbeing, Mindset is also an opportunity to share our knowledge and experience with a larger, external audience. The successful intern will work alongside the Mindset team, to help create a range of merch that attracts interest to the Mindset brand, as well as assisting on implementing a social media strategy that boosts Mindset’s profile. They will also be helping to shape Mindset’s content so that accessibility is increased for external audiences.

Our intern will be…

• Researching existing wellbeing merchandise and brands
• Assisting in the product development of Mindset merch
• Working on a social media strategy to boost the profile of Mindset.
• Helping shape content creation for Mindset’s Instagram and Tiktok.

We are looking for an intern who…

• Has experience in marketing/comms and social media.
• Can take initiative, work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
• Has an interest in promoting holistic health & wellbeing. 
• Can commit to a minimum 3 days a week (ideally Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday) for 3 months.

This is an unpaid internship; with expenses covered if needed.

As a Sewing and Embroidery Group volunteer you will be supporting our clients to develop basic dressmaking skills and how to use a sewing machine for different projects. Volunteers may support clients develop their sewing skills with the clients whilst look at ways of incorporating or potentially exploring art further.

*Please be aware this opportunity has an emphasis on empowering female clients and working to improve the experiences of the women that the team work with, which means that we are only looking for volunteers who are female or female identifying.

• Hammersmith and Fulham-Monday-Suday, between 9am-5pm, 2 hours per week

This internship will focus on supporting our You Are Not Alone (YANA) programme which is unique in addressing the those aged 16 - 35 who have attempted suicide or engaged in serious self-harm. We know how difficult the transition from adolescence to adulthood can be, and this programme is designed to provide vital continuity of support for people who are struggling with suicidality during this particularly sensitive period. The programme offers therapeutic and practical interventions for the young person and their family members to support them during this time e.g. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, community events, casework, and advocacy etc. 

The successful intern will work alongside the YANA team, to further improve our connections with stakeholders, funders, and referral partners and boost the profile of our suicide prevention services and continue with our work to develop a successful marketing plan.

Our intern will be…

• Establishing and maintaining new external partnerships with relevant bodies such as, A&E departments, universities and other charities
• Assisting in strengthening relationships with existing partners.
• Work alongside our MindSET team to increase profile and establish partnerships.
• Assisting with research, outreach and planning of outreach events.

We are looking for an intern who…

• Is confident in building long-lasting professional relationships and partnerships.
• Is proactive and confident in connecting with new people, and establishing new relationships, especially in-person.
• Has outreach/comms and/or social media experience
• Has experience or skills needed for planning and coordinating events.

• Can commit to a minimum 3 days a week (ideally Monday, Wednesday and Thursday) for 3 months.
