Volunteering in the shop

The Nicolson Street shop is a modern, contemporary and urban street store, unlike any other charity shop you've ever seen - full of vintage treasures, gorgeous greenery and creativity!
Our Nicolson Street Shop Volunteers are in the middle of it all, and there’s plenty to get involved with. You might be sorting and pricing stock, engaging with customers, ringing items through the till, creating fantastic window displays or keeping our shop floor looking organised.

It’s up to you how much you commit. We have volunteers who support for a couple of hours a week and some do more. Many people volunteer either a morning or an afternoon each week - this is something that will be discussed at the selection stage, after you’ve applied.

It’s a great opportunity to visit the shop, meet some of our existing volunteers and have a go at some of the tasks that you would be supporting with as a shop volunteer. Hopefully allowing you to get a feel for the role and make sure it’s for you. We also ask for a couple of references (these don’t have to be formal workplace ones, just someone who has known you for over 6 months and isn’t related).

Mary's Living & Giving for Save the Children is unique - a vibrant result of the generous gifts of local individuals and companies being turned around by the skills and passions of volunteer teams, to create a destination retail experience. Selling womenswear, menswear, shoes, and bags to household goods, our shops can be found in the London villages and bring in vital funds for Save the Children.

We are looking for someone to assist with running our scout group meeting hall, in Harpenden, working with the Hall Manager and Hall Treasurer.

Specific roles are:

* Managing regular hirers of the hall.

* Dealing with all suppliers (utilities, PPL/PRS, cleaning companies and insurance).

There are currently 7 regular hirers, most hiring once a week. Tasks include checking they have paid hire fees, dealing with occasional queries, inducting new hires (perhaps once or twice a year).

This role is important, as we depend on the fees from regular hirers to meet our running costs, which makes possible the scout activities and provides the community with a village hall.

Hours: between 0 and 5 per week. (It will vary depending what comes up.) Usually at a time that suits you. You can largely do this from home, but you will need to visit the hall from time to time, so you need to be fairly local.

This is an ongoing role and we would hope that you would take it on for at least a couple of years.

Expenses are likely to be negligible, but are refunded on request.

Although a CV is requested, you can make it as brief as you like. Please don't spend time honing your CV, just express interest and we can work out if you will fit.

Volunteer I&A Telephone Support Assistant

Make a real difference with just a friendly voice and good listening skills.

We’re looking for warm, organised volunteers to help answer calls to our Information & Advice (I&A) service. You’ll take basic enquiry details, log them onto our system, and help ensure residents who are 18+  get the support they need. We would ask for a commitment of a few hours a week.

What you’ll do

• Answer incoming calls in a calm, friendly and professional way
• Take clear messages and note down enquiry details
• Log information onto our CRM system (Salesforce)
• Keep all client information confidential
• Follow simple call‑handling guidance
• Flag urgent concerns to a member of staff
• Support small admin tasks linked to the service
• Join occasional team meetings or training sessions

• Fundraising Heroes - Whether it’s rallying local businesses, organising events, or getting creative with unique fundraising ideas, you’ll play a crucial role in keeping SSAFA’s support going strong.
• Administrators - Are you detail-oriented and love keeping things organised? Assist with branch and event administration, manage schedules and branch calendars, and ensure everything runs smoothly currently being undertaken.

Are you passionate about animal welfare and wanting to make a difference to the lives of cats and kittens in the York area? Join us as a Foster Coordinator to support the rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming of cats and kittens. 

Role overview:

As the Volunteer Foster Coordinator, you will play a vital role in managing our foster program for cats in our care. This position is essential for ensuring that our cats are placed in loving, temporary homes while they await adoption. You will collaborate closely with foster carers, potential adopters, and other volunteers to create a supportive environment that benefits both the cats and their fosters.

Key responsibilities:

• Foster management: Oversee the onboarding and ongoing support of foster carers.

• Communication: Serve as the primary point of contact for foster carers, addressing any questions or concerns and providing necessary updates. Communication will primarily occur through email and messaging platforms, access to facebook and Whatapp is essential.

• Training and support: Provide guidance and resources to foster carers on cat care, behaviour, and best practices to ensure the well-being of the cats in their care and ensuring our policies and procedures are upheld.

• Record keeping: Maintain organised and accurate records of foster placements, including intake forms, health updates, and feedback from foster homes.

• Coordination of resources: Ensure that foster homes have the necessary supplies (food, litter, etc.) and access to veterinary care as needed.

• Post-Foster follow-up: Check in with fosterers to gather feedback and facilitate any transitions to permanent homes, ensuring a smooth process for both the cats and their fosters.

What we’re looking for:

• Passion for animal welfare: A strong commitment to the well-being of cats and a desire to support their journey to permanent homes.

• Excellent communication skills: Ability to build rapport and communicate effectively with foster carers and the volunteer team.

• Organisational skills: Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple foster placements simultaneously.

• Computer proficiency: Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, and communication platforms such as email and social media.

• Previous experience in animal rescue: Preferred but not essential; a willingness to learn and grow in this role is important. It is essential, however, to have experience and knowledge of cat health and behaviour.
