What Will You Do?

As Lead Grants and Foundations, you will:

• Fundraising strategy: Design and implement a comprehensive strategy for identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding foundation, corporate, and government grant prospects.

Sooty, the nation’s much-loved bear and a true national treasure, has featured on RNIB’s collection boxes for over 50 years. Thanks to generous public support, these iconic boxes have raised more than £13 million in donations.

We’re looking for friendly, reliable volunteers to join our network of Sooty Box collectors. In this flexible role, you’ll help place new boxes and collect and bank donations from Sooty Boxes in local shops, cafés and other businesses in your area. Whether you volunteer on your own, with a friend or as part of a group, you’ll be making a real difference in your community.

You can give as much or as little time as you like and fit the role around your other commitments.

Please note: Volunteers are expected to use their own transport and ideally should have access to a car. Mileage or public transport costs will be reimbursed.

Getting started as a Community Wish Maker is simple. Within your first few months, you'll choose a fundraising activity from our Community Fundraising Toolkit or create your own fundraising idea. 

You can: 

- Organise an activity independently 
- Fundraise with friends, family or colleagues 
- Team up with other local Community Wish Makers 
- Support an existing Make-A-Wish fundraising campaign or event 
- Whether it's a bake sale, quiz night, sponsored challenge, workplace fundraiser, school activity or local business partnership, you'll be helping raise the funds needed to grant more wishes

We'll provide resources, guidance and support to help you succeed.

- A one-to-one introductory phone call with a member of our team 
- Materials to get you started in your role 
- A dedicated Volunteer manager 
- Access to connections & networks in your region 
- Make-A-Wish email address / ID Badge / Letter of Authority to help with your fundraising
- Help & support you with ideas and steward you as much as you would like
- Regular volunteer newsletters with updates, opportunities, and useful information

This is an ideal opportunity for anybody keen to get first-hand experience of the inspiring and exciting small charitable and community sector in London.

In the first instance, you will be working with our grants manager, appraising grant applications, visiting applicants and preparing reports on applicant suitability for consideration by the board, including a recommendation as to whether to make the grant or not. This is your opportunity to get to grips with the thriving community sectors in Ealing, Hounslow and Hillingdon and it is your judgement which will determine who is to receive funds.

Full training will be given and you will be able to shadow our grants manager in her work until you feel comfortable enough to take on your own cases.

As the role develops, you may, if you choose, get involved in our advice-giving, training and research activities. We are a fast-growing charity with ambitious plans, so this is your chance to get involved in our exciting activities right from the start.

The role would ideally suit someone who works part-time as during certain periods of the year (our grant rounds), you will be working 1-2 days a week.
