The Role: Helpline Call Taker (Family Support Volunteer)

As a Helpline Call Taker at Addiction Family Support, you will play a key role in offering emotional and practical support to individuals impacted by a loved one's addiction. You will provide a compassionate, non-judgmental listening ear, helping individuals navigate challenging circumstances.

This is a flexible role that is delivered remotely. Family Support Volunteers work within a flexible rota system to accommodate their availability and commitments while ensuring ongoing support for those who need it most.

Responsibilities:

• Offer empathetic and non-judgmental emotional support to individuals impacted by a loved one’s addiction.
• Provide relevant information, literature, and resources to help clients or group members cope with their situations.
• Offer structured emotional support adhering to guidelines and safeguarding measures.
• Maintain accurate records in line with GDPR and the charity’s policies.
• Participate in ongoing training, mentoring, and support sessions to enhance your skills and knowledge.
• Handle any potential safeguarding concerns and signpost clients to additional services when necessary.

Training and Development:

All Family Support Volunteers undergo a comprehensive three half day training programme covering addiction, core counselling skills, the 5-Step Method, bereavement, safeguarding, and self-care. Ongoing supervision, mentoring, and further development opportunities are available to support volunteers in their roles.

We are looking for volunteers to spend some time with our clients  in and around Central London or  to speak to them over the phone.  Our current needs are in Tulse Hill and Stepney Green, and we are looking for someone to call, then potentially meet with a client in Bromley.Locations  often change as new referrals come in, so if you are interested in befriending someone and making a positive difference to their emotional well being, please contact us, we may have a client in your area!  

 Meetings are regular, usually weekly or fortnightly, for at least 6 months although most of our volunteers stay involved for much longer than this, only because they enjoy what they do!  Phone calls are usually up to one hour and  are made once a week from any quiet space in your home or office. 

Befriending is a simple way to make a positive difference to someone who feels lonely or is socially isolated.  Your gift of time and companionship will give them, and you, something to look forward to. As one of our volunteers once said,“this is an easy, very meaningful way to help someone and is immensely rewarding and fun!”  

Meetings are held in the local community, having a friendly chat in a coffee shop, visiting places of interest together, or in our client’s home.Our clients are older Scots, (60  plus ) who simply want to do the activities that most of us take for granted.

We provide training before you start, ongoing support once you are matched, out of pocket expenses, references, social events and newsletters. 

This could be the ideal opportunity  for you to gain practical experience of working with adults in a health and social care setting, or for anyonewho simply enjoys meeting new people and making their lives a little brighter.

Role Description 

Are you passionate about changing the way we treat animals? Do you want to help reduce environmental damage? Do you want to inspire people to enjoy healthy vegan food that both looks good and tastes great? 

The Vegan Society aims to make veganism more accessible. We help people to adopt a vegan lifestyle by supporting individuals, policy- and decision-makers, caterers, manufacturers, healthcare professionals and the media. 

Why do we need you? 

Our nutrition team consists of two registered dietitians (we are currently recruiting for the second role). Our small team provides up-to-date nutrition and health resources on our website and evidence-based nutrition and health information for the charity’s campaigns. We also answer questions relating to vegan health and nutrition from the general public, the vegan community, caterers, and health and nutrition professionals via phone calls, email and post. 

Other areas of responsibility include attending events and giving talks on the latest vegan health and nutrition topics, writing articles, and speaking to the media about vegan health and nutrition. We are also responsible for developing recipes and blogs for various projects. 

We are a busy team and the support of a pharmacy volunteer would be invaluable. 

What does the role involve? 

We are looking for a volunteer who is a pharmacist or has a pharmaceutical background to support our nutrition team to handle medicine queries on an ad hoc basis. 

The specific tasks we would like the volunteer to take on are: 

• Collating and responding to medicine-related queries for a number of health conditions, including, but not limited to, osteoporosis, iron-deficiency anaemia, the menopause and thyroid disorders. 
• Researching ingredients and contacting manufacturers and pharmaceutical companies to find products suitable for vegans or without animal ingredients. 
• Comparing medicines suitable for vegans versus those containing animal-derived ingredients (e.g. side-effects, ingredients, costs). 

What training and support are available? 

The ideal candidate for this role will be someone with competency in pharmacy and responding to enquiries, so training in these areas would not be required. However, we are always willing to invite volunteers along to staff training when possible and to deliver training on specific skills inhouse, as identified throughout volunteering. This role is remote and therefore support from the Dietitian will be available through email and phone calls as required. Monthly or quarterly reviews with the Volunteering and Engagement Officer will also be conducted to ensure the volunteer is happy in their role. 

What skills would be useful in doing this role? 

• Trained pharmacist or pharmaceutical background 
• Competency in Microsoft Office 
• Strong written and verbal communication skills 
• An awareness and knowledge of vegan current affairs 
• Confidence to communicate any training or support needs 
• Ability to work independently 

What does my availability need to be? 

We are looking for someone who is available for one to two hours a week on a regular basis. These hours are flexible, but we would expect you to respond to public enquiries within three to five working days to meet the expectations of our supporters.

Volunteer Toddler Activities Assistant (Term Time)

About The Role

At WWT we shape unforgettable experiences; we want people to feel part of something amazing and this includes our youngest of visitors and the people they visit with.  We are therefore looking for keen and enthusiastic people to help run our weekly Wednesday term time toddler group: The Gosling Gang. You will enjoy working with other volunteers, families and young children; have good communication skills, an outgoing personality and an ability to think on your feet.

Volunteers are an essential part of the WWT team. You’ll get a warm welcome, including information on training, equipment and anything else you need.

Time commitment: approximately 12 part-days per year, including four Board meetings, committee meetings and one annual strategy day.Trustees are elected for an initial term of 3 years, and can be re-elected for a maximum of 3 terms (9years in total).

We are seeking Event Paramedics to respond to and manage emergency calls/incidents whilst attending events. At all times provide specialist, clinical, social and holistic care to undertake clinical assessment and interventions those individuals in the pre-hospital environment, which may include stadia, concerts, motorsports, road races etc. This may encompass working on both ambulances / FRV’s and within treatment units as required.

Successful candidates will be registered Paramedics with the HCPC and be able to provide evidence of CPD activity within the previous 12 months.

What you will do
• Record new carer registrations using our simple database.
• Prepare and post welcome packs, including carer ID cards.
• Complete the short 5-question contingency plan with each new carer.

• Log actions and update records so carers receive accurate support.

What will I be doing?

• Either, picking and sorting through fresh produce at the Wholesale markets
• Some lifting and use of light machinery such as pallet trucks and a bit of data-entry

When?

8am – 2pm weekdays. You do not have to stay for the whole shift - even a couple of hours is helpful

Kitchen helper

What will I be doing?

• Sorting, prepping and chopping produce
• packaging meals and washing up

When?

Shifts are between 10am-3pm on weekdays. You do not have to stay for the whole shift - even a couple of hours is helpful

Are you looking for a fresh challenge that makes a positive difference to the lives of Young People throughout the UK?

At Childline we are actively recruiting new Volunteers. 

What will I be doing?

• Your shift will consist of 3hrs30mns counselling, sandwiched between a 15mns brief before your shift and a 30mns debrief post shift. This is to ensure that you can start and finish your shift with any support you require from your Practitioners.
• On shift you will take contacts from Young People who rely on the service that Childline offers. Childline is not there to solve problems, we are a listening service for Young People and in each contact your role is to engage the Young Person, explore their situation and to support them in deciding their next steps.
• The contacts you would take from Young People can come in 3 ways. Traditional phone call contacts, live chats via instant response typed messaging or less commonly via 'PIBS' which are essentially emails sent by Young People in the knowledge the response will not be 'live' and instant.

What impact will this have?

• Childline is a unique service, valued greatly by the Young People who contact us.
• It provides a safe place for Young People to talk confidentially to our Volunteer Counsellors, an option that many of them do not have elsewhere.
• Young People rely on us being there for them 24/7. In an average month, Childline London takes approx. 1,500 live chats, 900 voice calls and 300 PIBs.
• However, the demand for the service often outstrips the supply as Young People who desperately need our service cannot always get through.
• That is why we are actively recruiting new Volunteers to be able to meet the need of all Young People who are in distress and need the support that Childline provides.

Training

• Childline offers a full 12 week online training programme to new Volunteers. This consists of one 4 hour session per week.
• During the training, you will meet other Volunteers in your cohort and have access to your 2 dedicated Childline Trainers.
• As part of the training, you will also go in person to the London Base for observation and mentored shifts which give you a face to face insight into how the Counselling Room works.
• You will also have access to a dedicated Volunteer Engagement Lead to give you a London Base tour (optional) and generally be on hand to answer any questions or queries you may have - big or small, if they matter to you they matter because you are giving your time to volunteer and Childline wants to offer you every level of support.
• Once you pass through training and become a qualified Childline Volunteer Counsellor, the development opportunities do not stop there. You will have access to a multitude of mandatory and optional training courses that are accredited and 100% free to all Volunteers.

We are seeking Event Doctors to respond and manage emergency calls/incidents at events which may include venues such as stadia, concert halls, motorsports tracks, road races etc. Event doctors shall provide specialist, clinical, social and holistic care while undertaking clinical assessment and interventions in the pre-hospital environment. This will mainly involve working in mobile treatment centres or temporary event medical centres.

 Successful candidates will be registered medical practitioners with the GMC, without cautions or restrictions, and hold a licence to practice outside of an approved practice setting.
