Charity people volunteer roles

Helping in our shops is a great way to help CHAS and, as well as helping us raise money to fund our vital services, you'll be part of a really great team of volunteers. You'll be meeting new people, using your skills or learning something new, and making sure our customers get a great welcome and all the assistance they need.

It's always great to see our volunteers chatting to customers and telling them about CHAS - and there's so much more to this role too: you could be sorting donations, getting stock ready for the shop floor, wielding a steamer or a duster, processing Gift Aid, operating the till (we will show you how), merchandising and displaying stock - you'll never have a dull moment.

It would be ideal if you could volunteer one shift each week, which is about four hours (but we're also happy to chat about more flexible times). No special skills are needed as we’ll show you what to do and we provide all the training you’ll need. But if you have any experience or particular interest please tell us, it may come in useful. It’s really easy to get your volunteering started.

There's never a dull moment in our shops and in Kinross you'll be working in a busy team, both in the stock room - sorting and preparing stock - and on our shop floors, providing great customer service.

Fundraising volunteers wanted to help East London Waterworks Park reach its funding goals

East London Waterworks Park is working to acquire a 14-acre, concreted-over depot on the border of Waltham Forest and Hackney, and to transform it into a ‘brownfield rainforest’ with wild-swimming pools and creative learning spaces for the local community. We are showcasing an environment-first, community-led approach to land ownership that will help nature and people thrive together, revolutionising the way we think about green and blue spaces in cities.

Our Crowdfunder raised over half a million pounds towards buying the land, but we are waiting for the landowner to make decisions about the use of the site. Whilst we wait, we need to raise money for the other work we are carrying out. We have an exciting programme of community projects and work coming up, including carrying out biodiverse transformations on other sites in London.

If you have experience of planning or running fundraising campaigns and would like to get involved with a local charity, we would love to hear from you. Perhaps you are buzzing with ideas of how to raise money or are keen to get stuck in and help to make some events happen. Maybe you are a good writer and seller of ideas and would like to join our mini team of funding bid writers. We would especially love to hear from you if you have experience of writing funding applications.

If you are a professional fundraiser and would like to help but are short on time, we would still love for you to get in touch. Even if you are unable to get deeply involved, we would appreciate one-off or ongoing advice.

We meet once a fortnight online on a Thursday evening 

We are looking for 3 trustees.  One from the global majority, one with an interest in the management of risk and one with skills in marketing, communications or PR.     

Background to Mosaic LGBT+ Young Persons’ Trust

Mosaic’s vision is to build a proud, strong and cohesive LGBT+ community that is safe from abuse, free from prejudice, healthy and making a positive contribution to society. Over more than 25 years, we have supported, educated and inspired thousands of young persons.

We have two distinct services: for 12 – 18 year olds and for 18 – 25 year olds.

Services for 12 – 18 year olds

- weekly youth group (Wednesday evening or Sunday night but you come to only one):  20 -25 young people, in our dedicated facility in Camden.  Adult mentors available to discuss issues, lots of games and chat and music and then settle down to that week's workshop. Coined by our members as ‘Mosaic’, the Youth Club has been regularly referred to as being ‘home’ or ‘like family.’ We are supported by a dedicated team of LGBT+ volunteer staff role models who run workshops and forums on a range of matters from sexual health to Queer literature.

- schools mentoring: for anyone in London, usually arranged via school, our mentor goes into school. Aimed at those who cannot make youth group

- culture club: around 6 times every month there is something we are doing cultural, be it going to a show, or a gallery or a museum.  We raise the funds so these trips are free and often there is a meal before or after

- book club, film club, homework club, yoga club:  regular sessions where the name is self explanatory

- drama therapy: team from RADA running a series of sessions a few times a year 

- counselling: we have a group of fully qualified psychotherapists offering one on one, group and family therapy

- big events:Homoween, Garden Party, Pride Prom, Clothes swap - big events which we advertise widely and attract up to 100 people to

- summer camp and winter retreat: residentials, the first focused on outdoor activity and the second focused on calmer activities

- Discord group: around 200 members in our moderated Discord space 

Services for 18 – 25 year olds

- month young adults group: similar format to youth group but less often so that they organise their own activities too

- Mosaic Works: CV, and interview advice, mentored paid work experience.  This is a huge focus for this group 

- outdoor group: meet every few weeks to go kayaking, hiking, cycling etc

- counselling: same as for youth group

- culture club: a monthly trip out, usually to theatre

- summer residential: usually at Pride Youth Games

What we are looking for

We have spent several years developing a firm foundation, with strong finances and clear policies. We now want to grow our services and programmes even more.

We are a small charity. We employ full time our Executive Director, Services Manager and Business Development Manager.  We have a part time Marketing Officer. We also have a great group of volunteers who dedicate time to the Youth Clubs and the other activities. Our Trustees should be very keen to be involved. We want you to be passionate about improving the lives of LGBT+ young persons. We also want you to be able to commit time to getting involved in our Trustee Board, picking up some of the tasks from there and working on them between meetings. We would also expect you to want to attend the Youth Club or some of the special events we run at least a few times a year.

As a member of Mosaic LGBT+ Young Persons’ Trust board (the “Board”) you help provide overall direction and leadership for the organisation’s strategy, with accountability for the organisation: sound management; financial health and quality of programme delivery.

General responsibilities (common to all Trustees)

In carrying out the collective responsibilities of the Board, individual Trustees should:

●Be an active participant, making relevant skills, experience and knowledge available to the organisation. This includes sitting on the Board and one of the Board subcommittees, occasionally attending events we are holding, and using personal networks to develop connections for the organisation

●Regularly attend Board meetings and prepare fully for those meetings including reading papers in advance, identifying key issues for discussion and providing advice and guidance on areas of expertise.  Board meetings are held 5 times a year.

●Regularly attend the meetings of the subcommittee of which you are a member and prepare fully for those meetings including reading papers in advance, identifying key issues for discussion and providing advice and guidance on areas of expertise. Committee meetings are held 5 times a year.

●Have prior knowledge of, or take time to familiarise themselves with, best practices of Charity governance and operations including financial management. (We will provide guidance and training on this)

A trustee from the global majority

We need a Trustee from the global majority who will be able to provide us with insight and perspectives that are not fully represented at our Board meetings.  We do have a diverse Board, but we are conscious that our membership, particularly in the young adults group, draws heavily from the global majority.  We think we would benefit from another Trustee from this background.  We are passionate about having diverse voices in our leadership because it helps us make better decisions. We also think we need to be sure we are hearing from people who have similar experiences to those we work with.

This Trustee position is open to those with a range of skills or specialisms, including but not limited to the provision of frontline services (for example safeguarding, working with young people, working with or knowledge of the challenges faced by LGBT+ refugees), marketing and fundraising (for example working in PR, having a knowledge of fundraising or events management) or charity management (for example financial skills - maybe gained outside the charity sector, governance or risk management).

We don’t need you to have been a Trustee before – we are committed to providing the training and support for anyone where this is their first Trustee role. Many of our current Trustees took this on as their first role and would now be regarded as experienced Trustees with a good knowledge of what is required to make the role a success..

A Trustee with an interest in management of risk

We need a Trustee with an interest in the management of risk. For us that means keeping the risk register (we already have one, and its up to date and in good shape), and working with the chairs of the committees to ensure that their committee reviews the risks that they own (our experience is that they need a bit of a push to do it, but when they do it, it is done well).  It also means saying “have we considered the risks here” when we discuss things at Board and making sure we keep that as a focus.

You don’t actually need to have done this before because it is relatively easy to understand and the role is keeping the organisation focused on risk rather than actually doing the risk management yourself.

We have a robust risk register and in the last 12 months we have spent half a day thinking specifically about our risk posture. We are losing the trustee who led this area and we need to replace them. If you have experience in governance of risk that would be great, but if you are simply interested in working with us and happy to pick up this area that is fine too.  You don’t have to have been a trustee before, but if you have been that would be good.

Responsibilities specific to this role

● To work with the members of the Finance, Risk and Governance committee to maintain a register of the critical risks that the Charity faces.

● To work with the chairs of the Board Committees to ensure that the committees are regularly assessing their risks, and regularly taking action to mitigate those risks

We need a Trustee with experience in marketing to join our Board and also our Marketing and Fundraising committee.  We have a part time staff member who creates our material and posts it.  We need ideas on how we might do better, reaching out to those who would benefit from what we do. You may have ideas about how we can improve our messaging, or where we could start to advertise and talk about what we do. We don’t need specific marketing skills but rather someone who is familiar with the way marketing works, who understands messaging and who has ideas on what we could do better.  If you are familiar with new trends and technologies we could be making better use of that would be great.

● To work with the members of the Marketing and Fundraising committee to improve awareness of what Mosaic does among our target audiences.

We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers in Hereford and surrounding areas to befriend and mentor a young person in care.

What You’ll Be Doing:

• Helping customers in the shop find what they need.
• Accepting donations of items and money from the public.
• Processing sales through the till and card machine, including Gift Aid. (Training is provided but if you are not comfortable using the till, please get in touch because we have plenty of other tasks that do not involve the till).
• Sorting through donated items to determine what we can sell.
• Preparing donated items for sale by steaming and hanging items.
• Merchandising stock on the shop floor.
• Creating attractive shop window displays.

What We’re Looking For:

• Friendly, local volunteers who are confident talking to people.
• Retail experience would be ideal but is not necessary as full training will be given.
• We are ideally aiming for someone who is flexible and can offer an ongoing commitment, preferably 8 hours per week.
• Good communication skills and numeracy skills. 
• You will need to be aged 16 or over.

Volunteering for Sense

Our amazing team of volunteers help us run over 100 shops across England and Wales.  Every donated item that you sort, prepare and sell helps to raise vital funds to support us in our mission to make sure no one, no matter how complex their disabilities, is isolated, left out, or unable to fulfil their potential. Our shops are at the heart of local communities – sharing the work of Sense, and helping to secure support for our life changing work.

What your role will involve

There are a variety of tasks that you can get involved with in the shop, including:

• Welcoming and assisting customers, providing great customer service and a fantastic shopping experience
• Receiving donated goods from members of the public
• Sorting, steaming, tagging and preparing donated goods for sale
• Creating eye catching window and in-shop displays
• Keeping the shop floor well stocked, tidy, clean and organised
• Processing sales and serving on the till
• Promoting Gift Aid and other Sense fundraising initiatives
• Acting as an ambassador for Sense; promoting the shop and Sense in your local community
• Supporting with the recruitment and training of new volunteers
• Following new health and safety measures to ensure the safety of everyone

About Medact

Medact organises the health community to work towards a world in which everyone is able to live healthy, dignified lives, supported by political and economic systems that centre health justice. Our priority work areas are some of the most pressing threats to health and wellbeing, including ending state violence, housing & energy justice, and migrant access to healthcare. Medact seeks systemic solutions to major social problems, and is unafraid to hold decision-makers to account. We launched our new five-year strategy at the end of 2025, embedding our vision for how we win and how we grow.

We’re member-led, and our membership spans a range of people who work in health, including nurses, doctors, midwives and clinical researchers, as well as people from the wider health community.

About the role

Our Board of Trustees provides guidance, governance and final sign-off on major decisions on behalf of our membership. Trustees are collectively responsible for the governance of the organisation in line with the requirements of the Charity Commission. Trustees also contribute to the development of Medact's strategy and participate in a range of other activities to support the Director and staff with our work.

There are four planned board meetings per year, which are hybrid, and it is expected that each Trustee will attend most Board meetings. Trustees are also sometimes asked to give their views or sign off on issues between Board meetings if an issue cannot wait. It is hoped that each Trustee will have the capacity to use their unique skills to support the team more broadly with Medact’s work.

As Chair, you will support the Executive Director and staff to help build on our achievements and realise Medact’s vision. You will work with fellow Trustees to make up a strong and effective Board governing the Charity. 

Acting as a Trustee is a voluntary role but reasonable travel expenses can be paid. 

Who we are looking for

Our current Board brings a broad range of skills, but we recognise that we do not yet reflect the diversity of the health community. There are also specific types of experience and expertise we would like more of on the Board. In particular, we are looking for potential Trustees with one or more of the following attributes:

• Lived experience of an issue that Medact campaigns on, for instance the Hostile Environment, the health impacts of economic or housing injustice, the health impacts of armed conflict or UK security policies

• Experience as a frontline health worker of any sort, preferably current

• Legal and safeguarding expertise

• Fundraising expertise, particularly individual giving or major donor fundraising

• Human resources expertise

As Chair, you will be actively networked within the health community or broader social justice movement and highly experienced in governance or strategic leadership of a charity or NGO. You will have the skills to line-manage the Executive Director. And you will have the ability to advocate on behalf of Medact’s work, as well as helping to build the membership and public image of the organisation. 

We hope all Trustees will: 

• Share our vision for a fairer and safer world, and our analysis of the transformational change needed to get closer to it

• Approach Board discussions and conversations with the team with an open mind, able to listen to and genuinely engage with others’ views

• Display collaborative behaviours which promote harmony and good team working which supports Medact to be an effective, well-governed organisation

Previous experience on a charity board or in another governance role is useful but by no means essential. Helping in our shops is a great way to help CHAS and, as well as helping us raise money to fund our vital services, you'll be part of a really great team of volunteers. You'll be meeting new people, using your skills or learning something new, and making sure our customers get a great welcome and all the assistance they need.

It's always great to see our volunteers chatting to customers and telling them about CHAS - and there's so much more to this role too: you could be sorting donations, getting stock ready for the shop floor, wielding a steamer or a duster, processing Gift Aid, operating the till (we will show you how), merchandising and displaying stock - you'll never have a dull moment.

It would be ideal if you could volunteer one shift each week, which is about four hours (but we're also happy to chat about more flexible times). No special skills are needed as we’ll show you what to do and we provide all the training you’ll need. But if you have any experience or particular interest please tell us, it may come in useful. It’s really easy to get your volunteering started.
