What we need from you

This is a highly flexible role, and you can choose how you’d like to get involved. Opportunities include:

• Face-to-face fundraising – organising or helping at fundraising events, running supermarket collections and fundraising stands, and monitoring collection tins
• Online fundraising – setting up online appeals and writing engaging cat case studies to maximise donations
• Marketing and promotion – spreading the word about fundraising activities via social media and local press
• Administration – processing donations, sorting and recording donated goods, and completing Gift Aid paperwork
• Championing our work – helping to develop new fundraising ideas and increasing community engagement
• Photography – capturing images of cats in care, cats we’re helping, fundraising events, and all things Cats Protection

We are currently looking to recruit an external trustee to join our Board of Trustees and also act as chair to the Finance and Audit Sub-Committee. We will also require the trustee to support our whistleblowing policy, acting as the nominated trustee contact for whistleblowing concerns.  You’ll champion openness and ensure the organisation has safe, fair, and effective processes for raising and handling concerns.

Your SU is overseen by our Board of Trustees, and our trading subsidiary (CUSU Services Ltd) is overseen by our Commercial Services Board . They are both made up of a collection of our elected Officers, students, university staff and external professionals that ensure the Charity and the Trading Subsidiary remain sustainable in terms of finance, legality and reputational status.

You will be expected to attend Board meetings 4 times per year – these will be a mix of in person and Teams meetings. You will also be expected to support at least one sub-committee of the Trustee Board (3-4 times per year) as well as complete training and induction. You will need some time to allow for prereading of reports and other documentation before meetings. 

Trustee meetings are typically held on a Friday afternoon 1pm-4pm. Most of the meetings are online, although you would be offered travel expenses for any face-to-face meetings (and hybrid meetings are usually offered if you do need to join remotely.) There is also a strategy day once a year as well as the occasional social activity!

For this trustee role, we are looking for an experienced professional ideally with third-sector governance experience. In addition to being a member of the Board of Trustees the trustee will be required to chair the Finance and Audit subcommittee and should possess a strong finance background with analytical skills and the ability to communicate complex financial information.

We are especially keen to encourage applications from people currently under-represented within the organisation, including but not limited to those from the LGBTQ+ community, people with disabilities, and those from a Global Majority background. We hope that by enhancing our diversity we can extend our organisational creativity and problem solving through the different perspectives and life experiences which diversity brings.

The Role

AMI is seeking a Lay Trustee to join its modern, forward-thinking Board.

The Board meets at least three times per year via Teams, with scheduling accommodating trustees globally. One annual face-to-face meeting is held in the UK.

Trustees play a vital role in guiding and strengthening AMI. They provide support and advice on the organisation’s purpose, vision, goals, and activities, while overseeing high-level strategies, policies, and financial plans. Trustees help identify and manage key risks, review financial statements, and support the Chief Executive in delivering AMI’s mission. They contribute their expertise and networks to promote AMI’s reputation, actively engage in committees or advisory groups, and champion membership growth. Acting independently, legally, and in good faith, Trustees prioritise AMI’s interests and stay informed about its operating environment.

Key responsibilities include:

• Approving strategies, policies, budgets, and monitoring progress

• Ensuring effective risk management and financial oversight

• Supporting and challenging leadership while contributing expertise

• Promoting AMI’s aims, reputation, and membership growth

In addition, the Lay Trustee will:

• Advise on the development of a new commercial strategy aligned with AMI’s mission to drive revenue growth and diversify income streams

• Provide guidance on sales, market dynamics, customer segments, business development, product/service commercialisation, new product development, and commercial partnerships

• Serve on the Finance, Audit and Risk Committee (5 meetings per year, held remotely)

The Person

AMI is seeking individuals with an entrepreneurial mindset, fresh perspectives, and energy to contribute to a dynamic organisation with global reach. The successful candidate will play a key role in shaping AMI’s future, including contributing to a major strategic review planned for 2026.

Candidates do not need to be UK-based but must share and actively support AMI’s values and be motivated by the opportunity to make a meaningful difference through good governance and strategic leadership.

Essential experience and qualities:

• Background in business or commercial development, ideally within the STEM sector

• Proven track record of senior commercial leadership in STEM

• Strong integrity and personal credibilityMicrobiology expertise is not required.

• Global experience and mindset, open to cross-border collaboration

• Commitment to AMI’s mission, strategic objectives, and values

As we approach our 30th anniversary in 2028, we are looking for committed new trustees with energy, passion and time who will continue to drive us forward.

Musical talent is everywhere but opportunity isn't: family finances and other obstacles too often get in the way. Young Sounds is here to change this.

For nearly 30 years we've supported talented young people from low-income families, helping them to overcome financial and social barriers. Whether they're making or creating music our programmes help young musicians from across the UK to fulfil their musical potential.

Trustees are expected to engage with and support all aspects of the charity, helping to foster stakeholder relationships, representing the organisation regionally and nationally and ensuring compliance and safeguarding. 

Principal responsibilities are:

• Strategy - contributing actively to the formation of strategy, the Young Sounds business plan, and evaluating the performance of the organisation against the plan.
• Oversight - ensuring that the charity is well run, efficient and compliant with the charity's Articles of Association, its policies, including safeguarding and EDI, governance codes of practice, legal responsibilities and upholding the organisation's reputation and values.
• Advocacy - advocating for the charity at all times, supporting fundraising efforts and promoting the work of the charity in the trustee's daily life.

Requirements:

Previous trustee experience is not necessary, and we welcome trustees who can bring a diversity of life experiences, cultural knowledge and expertise.

As a national charity we are keen to attract trustees from all parts of the UK, and particularly those who are based outside London and the South East.

For this round, we particularly welcome expertise in the following areas:

• EDI and CSR programmes in the creative industries
• Youth culture and content creation
• Music Hub and/or National Curriculum expertise
• Fundraising
• Contemporary music performance and production

Above all we are looking for trustees who are passionate about, and willing to advocate strongly for, giving all young people the opportunity to have a musical life, particularly those facing the most barriers. We also expect trustees to have an overarching commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.

Migrateful is looking for new Trustees to help guide our next chapter! Migrateful runs cookery classes in London and Bristol led by refugees and migrants to support them on their journey to integration & employment.
 

Trustees play a vital role in setting strategic direction, strengthening governance and acting as critical friends to the executive team, ensuring Migrateful continues to deliver high quality, impactful work in line with its charitable purpose.

We are currently looking for a trustee with financial qualifications and experience, ideally including charity finance and fundraising, who will support the Finance and Risk Subcommittee. This includes overseeing budgets, monitoring financial performance, reviewing financial and operational risks, and providing assurance on internal control systems to support financial decision-making.

Trustees will play a pivotal role in ensuring Migrateful can continue to grow and deliver meaningful impact for migrant and refugee communities. They will help support the continued expansion of our cookery class programme, which provides vital training, employment and integration opportunities and a platform for migrant-led cultural exchange.

This is a meaningful opportunity to use your skills and experience to make a real difference, while developing your own governance knowledge and being part of a supportive, committed Board.

Northumberland Domestic Abuse Services (NDAS) has been supporting people affected by domestic abuse since 2003. We provide free, confidential emotional, practical and therapeutic support to women, men, children and young people, helping survivors to cope, recover and move forward. Alongside this, we deliver prevention education to reduce the number of people who go on to experience or cause domestic abuse.

Who we’re looking for

We’re keen to hear from people from a range of backgrounds and lived experiences. In particular, we would welcome Trustees with experience in:

• Finance / financial management

• Human Resources

• Legal expertise

You don’t need previous trustee experience, what matters most is a commitment to our values, a willingness to learn, and a desire to help NDAS grow and thrive.

What being a Trustee involves

As a Trustee, you’ll help guide the strategic direction of NDAS, ensure good governance, and support the charity to continue delivering high-quality services across Northumberland.

• Board meetings take place quarterly and usually last around 2 hours, held at our Hexham office

• Additional commitments include:

  • An Annual General Meeting

  • Occasional sub-committee meetings

  • A Board development day

  • Occasional NDAS events

• The average time commitment is around 4 hours per month, with some periods requiring a little more time

Trustee roles are voluntary, with reasonable expenses reimbursed.

Whatever time you can give really does make a big difference We have lots of exciting activities to choose from for example attending a fundraising event, fundraising online, promoting fundraising activities on social media, handling administrative tasks, or contributing to the development of new fundraising ideas. Whatever your skill set, this role could be perfect for you! 

What can I expect to be doing? 

As a flexible role, you have the choice to be involved in the following: 

• Face-to-face fundraising – organising or helping with our fundraising events, attending supermarket collections or local markets. 

• Distributing collection tins – popping collection tins into local shops and pubs and collecting them when they’re full. 

• Bringing new ideas! - We always love to come up with new ideas to raise funds for cats and we’d love to help bring yours to life. 

• Engaging with your local branches and Fundraising Hub and feeling like an integral part of the team!
