Aid Box Community (ABC)

We are looking to appoint someone with leadership qualities and high motivation, initially 
to join us as a trustee in June and then to take on the position of Chair in November. In 
close co-operation with our dedicated team of trustees and inspirational director, you will 
be guiding our charity through the next phase of our journey. This is a very exciting 
opportunity to play an important role in the development of Aid Box’s strategy over the 
next 5 years and to oversee the deepening of our charity’s impact on our community, 
made possible by our recent move into our new home. 

About Aid Box Community

We are a charity based in Bristol and for nearly nine years have been providing vital support, supplies and sanctuary to men women and children seeking asylum in this city. You are welcome to come and have a look at the work we do by visiting, by prior arrangement, our Welcome Hub and Free Shop. 

What are our trustees responsible for?

We are all jointly responsible for:

• The overall management of our charity.
• Setting and monitoring Aid Box’s strategic direction and ensuring it is financially sound.
• Ensuring the charity carries out the purposes set out in our constitution for the benefit of our community and in line with the Charity Commission’s guidance.

Main duties and responsibilities as a Chair:

• leading our charity’s strategic direction in close collaboration with the board and our director.
• Chairing quarterly trustee meetings as well as our HR sub committee meetings.
• Representing trustees in contacts with other charities and organisations.

This role is for you if:

• You have leadership experience (formal or informal), either within or outside the charity sector.
• You have specialist skills that may benefit Aid Box Community. Motivated by ABC’s vision, mission and values, in particular upholding the basic human rights of refugees and asylum seekers.
• Teamwork and communication skills with ability to listen and build a consensus.
• Living in or near Bristol . You would like to join a fantastic community of staff, volunteers and service user

We will provide practical support, principally through our deputy chair, along with a full induction programme including the legal framework and other key areas such as safeguarding. During your time with Aid Box, you will be able to join training workshops relevant to your role as a trustee, along with the opportunity to be involved in a range of charity activities.

Our partner is a small Suffolk based charity working to create a Creative Youth Hub, Nursery and Playscape for children and young people in the local area, following the loss of the former youth centre.

The Treasurer will hold the Board to account for the charity’s finances and help maintain a clear and transparent financial framework. Working closely with fellow Trustees and the wider team, you will oversee budgeting and reporting, ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, and support financial planning as the project develops. The role will involve managing multiple income streams, including grants and donations.

The ideal candidate will be a qualified accountant or experienced finance professional with strong financial management skills and the confidence to advise fellow Trustees. Experience of charity finance and governance would be helpful but is not essential.

This is a rewarding opportunity to support a community led capital project with significant local impact. The role is expected to require around 1 to 3 hours per week initially, increasing as the project moves forward, with attendance at regular Board meetings either in person or via Zoom.

Key Responsibilities:

• Help identify and organise community fundraising opportunities, including events, challenges, and campaigns

• Build and maintain strong relationships with local businesses, schools, faith groups and community organisations to encourage financial and in-kind support.

• Support planning and logistics for attending events (stall set-up, materials, rota support)

• Liaise internally to ensure events are well-prepared and staffed

• Help coordinate fundraising resources

• Support with new ideas for local fundraising opportunities

Community Engagement volunteers help to raise awareness of the support available for deaf children and their families through engagement with community and voluntary groups, and/or faith-based groups and/or other support organisations. This role will help us to better support communities, in order to build trust and ensure that any barriers to support are understood and overcome.

• Have knowledge of (or willingness to learn about) deafness and local services for deaf children

As a Community Volunteer there is a wide range of impacts that you could have. You could contribute to raising first aid awareness in your community. You may also be involved in fundraising activity to support the work of St John. Delivering presentations to local groups and organisations, as well as finding opportunities to expand the reach of St John. You could also impact St John people by contributing to creating a welcoming and supportive environment. Expected time commitment At least 24 hours per year. What you could be involved in (responsibilities) Sharing St John, educating community groups about the work of St John Organising or supporting fundraising activity Sharing a skill, providing first aid awareness to community groups in your local network Supporting St John, helping with the hospitality, administration and wellbeing of other volunteers Representing St John Ambulance positively and in line with our HEART values. You will need to have the following (personal specification) An interest in supporting your local community through education and meaningful engagement Able to confidently present information and engage with diverse groups Able to work collaboratively alongside a diverse group of volunteers.

Our management committee has succession needs. We seek a trustee to chair it and build on our strong heritage and renew for the next generation, a people-person who can attract and develop a team of custodians with diverse skills to give management oversight and strategic direction.

What will you be doing?

We are looking for someone who will enjoy being part of our community and who has the drive to help renew and guide the work at our Dorset retreat centre.

Our Dorset centre has recently undergone very successful updating of some of the facilities. We have a loyal visitor base who respond generously to appeals for donations.  We are looking to recruit a Trustee who can join a team of people with varied expertise to make steady and sustained progress to ensure that this much loved centre, with 100 years of history is a treasured resource for the next generation.

Our vision is to be a place for both environmental awareness and inclusive Christian theology, experienced by the way we live, the programme of events that we hold and how we run and renew the buildings and land; practical hope in action.

The charity is well governed with Trustees taking responsibility for the finances, health & safety and safeguarding. We have good accountancy support and our financial reserves are adequate.

As Chair of the Centre Management Committee you have responsibility for the Burton Bradstock  centre but also as a Trustee of the whole charity with providing strategic direction of the whole charity.

The Centre Management Committee meets 2x in person at the centre each year and overnight accommodation is available.  The whole board of Trustees meet online quarterly (a weekday evening 1.5 hours) and have two residential weekend meetings per year, one at each centre (Bradwell-on-Sea, Essex and Burton Bradstock, Dorset). The charity covers all out-of-pocket expenses.

What are we looking for?

Most importantly the energy, time and enthusiasm to support the flourishing of the Retreat Centre; after that then one or more of the following would be helpful:

• Line management experience
• Working within Charity Commission guidelines
• Operational or facilities management experience
• Previous Trustee experience or similar (nice but not a requirement)

As Chair of the the Centre Management Committee you will support and shape the ongoing development of staff and operations of the retreat centre.

People of all ages come to Othona to be themselves, valued for who they are. They find support through difficult times e.g. bereavement, family breakdown, ill health, find a new direction, feel restored. This experience of community, affirms people and contributes to social re-connection while at Othona and back home. People make friendships at Othona that last for years.

References will be required, as will a basic level DBS check, a declaration that you have not been barred from becoming a Trustee or Director. A role description is attached.

As our LGBT+ Community Space Volunteer, you will support the lead facilitator to run inclusive and creative employability workshops that support LGBT+ young adults (aged 18-30) to build confidence, develop soft skills, and strengthen social connections with fellow peers.

You will help create a welcoming, supportive environment where our services users feel safe enough to express themselves, establish a sense of belonging, and engage in creative learning.

You will be working collaboratively with other team members of Blossom to play a key role in delivering engaging, accessible sessions that center community, creativity, and both personal and professional growth. 

You will also be offered the opportunity to get involved with further “Train the Trainer” sessions to develop your own skills to help strengthen your facilitation and leadership.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

1) Workshop Delivery 

• Support the lead facilitator with running the workshops (e.g. using creative methods to develop essential employability skills) based on the brief by the Head of Programmes & Services. 

• Create a welcoming, inclusive, and neurodiverse-friendly environment 

• Support participants to engage, connect, and build confidence 

• Encourage open and respectful communication 

2) Session Setup & Support 

• Support the lead faciliator to set up and pack down workshop activities and materials 

• Maintain a clean, safe, and organised space 

• Ensure resources are used safely and kept in good condition 

• Completing evaluation assessments and record keeping 

3) Safeguarding & Wellbeing 

• Support the safety and wellbeing of all of our service users 

• Raise any safeguarding concerns in line with procedures 

• Provide appropriate support and signposting where needed 

4) Planning & Collaboration 

• Share ideas for future workshop ideas based on the response and engagement from the service users 

ABOUT YOU:

We’re looking for someone proactive, reliable, and ready to get stuck in. You don’t need lots of experience — attitude and passion matters most. 
 
It is important that you: 

• Care about supporting LGBT+ young adults (aged 18-30) and creating inclusive spaces 

• Feel confident, approachable, and able to adapt to different people 

• Take initiative and work well as part of a team 

• Organised and able to manage tasks and resources 

Desirable but not essential: experience in youth work, community work, or creative workshops

Once we have completed your selection and screening for this role, we will provide you with an induction, as well as invite you to any necessary training sessions. There will be a 30 minute informal interview and Welcome to St John session.
