Summary

The Sussex Area of the Ramblers has two Countryside Officers, one for East Sussex and one for West Sussex. The main activity in the role is to act on behalf of members where a planning development is likely to have an adverse impact on the walking environment in the Sussex countryside.

Description

The Ramblers, the Sussex Area of which celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2026, is the only charity dedicated to removing barriers so everyone can enjoy walking in green spaces, and to improving Britain’s most popular and least-known walking places. We’re committed to campaigning to keep our footpaths open to all and to fighting for the things that matter most to walkers. We lead the way, and the walks, for a vibrant community united by the joys of walking, helping everyone get more out of their walks. 

The role of East Sussex Area Countryside Officer involves reviewing planning applications published by Local Authorities and creating and submitting objections on behalf of Sussex Ramblers if an application is likely to have an adverse impact on the Sussex countryside and the places where people walk. Objections may be expressed in writing through a response to the planning process, but could also involve site visits and on occasion attendance at public hearings or meetings with representatives of Local Authorities or with other stakeholders such as Parish Councils and environmental and wildlife organisations.

The role holder will work closely with other Ramblers volunteers such as the East Sussex Area Footpath Officer, the West Sussex Area Countryside Officer and Local Footpath Wardens in East Sussex and where necessary will seek advice and guidance from Ramblers' Central Office. Other main contacts include the Local Authorities, Parish/Town Councils, the South Downs National Park Authority and the East Sussex Local Access Forum. The role holder will be a member of the Area leadership team (Area Council). You will need to be a member of the Ramblers and to live in or close to East Sussex.

By volunteering as an Area Countryside Officer you will be playing a vital role in making sure we can achieve this by holding Local Authorities to account for planning decisions, and helping to ensure that our countryside and the places people walk, essential to health and wellbeing, are safeguarded.

Skills and Experience Required

You should have a passion for walking and for the preservation and protection of the natural beauty of the countryside and the special qualities of urban space, and a good knowledge of the county. Experience and knowledge of the Local Authorities' planning process is not essential but would be an advantage. The role is suitable for someone who is highly reliable, organised, capable of taking initiative and with an ability to articulate strategic issues clearly in written and spoken form. A desire and ability to work in a team environment is essential. You will also need to be comfortable using a computer and the internet, and managing information.

Become Treasurer of Bristol Historic Buildings Trust - help put a Grade I landmark on a sustainable footing

Bristol Historic Buildings Trust (BHBT) is looking for a Treasurer to join our Board as we bring Ashton Court Mansion back into full public life.

Ashton Court Mansion is a Grade I listed manor house with origins in the 14th century, set within an 850-acre estate on the edge of Bristol. Around three quarters of the building remains derelict. We are working with Bristol City Council to take a 125-year lease and regenerate the Mansion as a living civic place where heritage, creativity and public life meet.

This is a real moment of transition. We are already in the building under a tenancy at will, have refurbished the first rooms and begun taking event bookings. We are converting to a Charitable Community Benefit Society and preparing to launch a Community Share Offer shortly, raising community investment towards the lease and the first phase of works. Restoration of the whole building is a multi-decade, grant-led programme of significant scale.

Our vision is a building that works as a place of celebration, incubation and education, programmed around five areas: food, culture and arts, skills, nature and outdoors, and heritage.

The Treasurer will be central to how credibly we make that case.

What we are looking for

•A qualified accountant, or equivalent senior finance experience

•Confidence with charity finance, or solid general finance experience and the appetite to pick up the charity-specific parts with us

•Experience overseeing budgets, management accounts and cashflow in an organisation moving from small to substantially larger

•Comfort scrutinising a multi-year financial model and its assumptions, and explaining the numbers plainly to fellow trustees, funders and the public

•Ideally, exposure to community shares, social investment or capital fundraising - though this is not essential

•Leading Board-level financial oversight: budget approval, management accounts, annual accounts, reserves and risk

•Helping us stand behind the financial disclosures in our lease case and share offer documents

•4 quarterly board meetings per year (March, June, September, December), approx. 2 hours each, plus Finance and Audit Committee meetings

This role will offer the opportunity to become part of the volunteer team at the Warner Textile Archive to develop practical experience in collections management working with the library and reference collection held by the Warner Textile Archive. The collection includes books, periodicals, and theses on art, history and design. This opportunity is suitable for volunteers as well as students looking to complete placements or work experience as part of their studies.

Role Description

• Catalogue at item level, following data input policies, on collections management system CollectionsIndex+ to support improved access to the library and reference collection. 

• Cross check information on Collections Index + with index cards to include all relevant historic information.

• Work alongside the Archive team and experienced volunteers to support the Archive’s daily work, including conservation and research support.

• There is an opportunity to create a short article and related social media content about your experience of working with the collection.

Further Information

Full training and support will be given on all aspects of the role. No previous experience necessary. 

We are able to facilitate a flexible work schedule based on the individual’s existing responsibilities. For a student placement, we require a minimum of 10 days to provide meaningful work experience.

Some online training on cataloguing, the history of Warner & Sons, and collections care will be required prior to the student’s start date.

The role is not remote and will require travel to Warner Textile Archive, Silks Way, Braintree, Essex, CM7 3GB. We have a travel bursary of up to £50 per day which is able to offer support with travel costs and £5 per day for subsistence.

Computer facilities will be provided on-site.

About the Warner Textile Archive

The Warner Textile Archive is a significant collection of design, business, economic and social history of textile manufacturing firm Warner & Sons, based in Braintree between the dates of 1870 – 2001. The Warner Textile Archive is the largest collection of an individual textile manufacturer available in the public domain in the United Kingdom. We hold over 100,000 administrative records, paper designs, trial samples, manufacturing equipment and textiles of Warner & Sons, their predecessors and successors, illustrating how furnishing textile manufacturing changed over more than 150 years. 

Essential Skills and Knowledge Required

• Excellent Microsoft Office software skills and general computer literacy, with the enthusiasm to learn new systems.

• Must be dedicated to working to a meticulous attention to detail in regards to accurate data inputting, spelling and grammar.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the willingness to work with a dedicated team of staff and volunteers of different ages and backgrounds.

• Must be able to follow clear instructions and ask questions when unsure.

• This position requires moving and lifting large items.

This is an opportunity to lead the protection of the vital footpaths and rights of way network across the countryside of West Sussex and ensure walking in the natural environment is accessible to everyone.

You will coordinate a team of Local Footpath Wardens and will be responsible for assessing proposals affecting paths and for developing Ramblers' response to and comments on those proposals, liaising with Ramblers' Central Office and other stakeholders as necessary.

You will represent Ramblers' Sussex Area on rights of way issues with the local authorities and at meetings and public events.

To undertake the role you will need to keep up to date with legal and policy information about paths and planning issues nationally as well as in your local area.

The skills required for the role are to be confident but diplomatic; able to understand complex rights of way and legal issues; be friendly and personable with the ability to influence; and good at presenting arguments in writing and in person.

The role will offer you the opportunity to use your existing networking skills; to develop new skills and knowledge in relation to rights of way issues; and to work with a group of fellow volunteers to influence local policy.

We need a trustee with significant fundraising experience, who can help achieve our vision for ACM and who can help the Board build the capability to do it repeatedly.

•A track record with major grant funders - National Lottery Heritage Fund, Arts Council England, Historic England, trusts and foundations

Every week you can find our environmental experts at Snipe Park Wood in Harworth & Bircotes, a lovely green space! We maintain it for the enjoyment of the community and wildlife.

In 2024 we tackled the persistent flood problems in the area, by removing overgrown vegetation, digging out blocked drains. To launch the improved area, we hosted free children’s play groups for pre-school age children to engage with nature and discover the joys of outdoors play.

We are currently working on a wide range of improvements, including improving pathways, creating wildlife habitats, implementing a wildflower meadow, small construction tasks like building fences, litter picking, and much more.

You can be part of it! We are looking for volunteers who can help us. We are there every Monday 9am – 2pm and you can choose to come ad-hoc or regularly.

Our outdoor community hub in Worksop launched in autumn 2024 and continues to grow.

We host family events, children’s nature play groups, workshops, green skills training sessions, and much more. We also grow our own produce to use in healthy cooking and eating events on-site.

Every other Friday 9:30am – 2:30pm we work with volunteers who want to be part of something special, to give back to the community and the environment. You can still sign up even if you can’t attend every time or all day, every hour you spent with us is greatly appreciated.

The Ramblers are Britain's biggest and most vibrant walking community with over 3000 members in Sussex. The Area Chair oversees all activities of the Ramblers across Sussex and delivers the Ramblers' vision for the Area.

Sussex is one of around 60 Ramblers' Areas in the UK which campaign to keep our countryside open to all and fight for the things that matter most to walkers, as well as coordinating the Groups (8 in Sussex) through which organised walks are provided.

The Chair leads the Area Executive Committee and Area Council in driving the campaigning activity, supporting the Groups to run well, ensuring that Ramblers' national policies and procedures are followed by the Area and Groups, and overseeing the Area's working relationship with local authorities, politicians, and other stakeholders.

In addition the Chair has a key responsibility for the recruitment and retention of Area Officers.

Position Summary

Solution Community is seeking an experienced, passionate Volunteer Development/Fundraising Network Senior Recruiter to attract, engage, and onboard talented fundraising and development professionals. This strategic volunteer role will help build a strong network of fundraising leaders, donor engagement specialists, grant professionals, and development experts who can contribute to the organization's long-term sustainability and impact.

The ideal candidate is an experienced recruiter with expertise in sourcing and recruiting talent within nonprofit development, philanthropy, fundraising, donor relations, corporate partnerships, or advancement functions.

Key Responsibilities

Talent Acquisition & Recruitment

• Develop and implement recruitment strategies to identify and attract fundraising and development professionals.
• Source, screen, interview, and assess candidates for volunteer and leadership opportunities within the fundraising network.

Qualifications

Required
