For almost 500 years, we've supported Southwark's communities. Now we're looking for two new Trustees to help shape our next chapter — including building on the legacy of Appleby Blue, our RIBA Stirling Prize-winning almshouse.

United St Saviour's Charity is a place-based community investor in Southwark, providing almshouses, grant-funding and community programmes that build resilience and connection across the borough. Over the last decade we've nearly doubled our housing provision and delivered Appleby Blue — a social housing development for older people that went on to win the RIBA Stirling Prize, the UK's most prestigious architecture award.

This role is for you if:

• You understand what effective governance looks like — strategic planning, risk management, and change management
• You have a strong lived or learned understanding of Southwark and its communities, including both local strengths and the barriers that affect opportunity and wellbeing
• You bring experience in one or more of: housing and property development, organisational governance, community development, or finance and accounting
• You're comfortable raising challenge and disagreeing constructively, while standing by decisions the Board reaches collectively
• You have a good level of IT literacy
• No previous trustee or board experience is required — a genuine willingness to learn matters just as much

What you'll do

As a Trustee, you'll share collective responsibility for our governance, working alongside fellow Trustees and the Chair to hold the organisation to a clear strategy, ensure our assets and resources are used well You'll contribute your own skills and experience to strengthen the Board's decision-making, sit on at least one, and up to two, committees, and act as an ambassador for the charity's values and reputation.

You'll be joining at a pivotal moment: we're scaling up our housing development pipeline, delivering a new Community Investment Strategy for 2025–2030, and increasingly being asked to share what we've learned with other boroughs and housing providers as our national influence grows.

We're looking for people with experience in one or more of:

• Organisational development and governance — overseeing organisational development, governance, HR, or strategic oversight
• Community development — community work and wealth, charitable organisations, social investment, or grant-making
• Housing, land and property — housing, property development, planning, property management or property investment
• Finance and accounting — accounting, financial management, investment portfolios, and managing financial risk responsibly

You don't need all four — one or more is enough. Alongside that, we're looking for a strong lived or learned understanding of Southwark and the communities we serve, and a good level of IT literacy. No previous trustee or board experience is required.

Location and time commitment

Based in the London Borough of Southwark — Board and committee meetings take place at our offices and almshouses. This is a voluntary role (reasonable expenses met) requiring four Board meetings a year, a Strategy and Reflection Day, and membership of one to two committees, each typically meeting four times a year.

Most importantly you’ll be helping us engage with lots of people and get the word out to people with MS about support to help them live their lives to the full.

This role will offer the opportunity to become part of the volunteer team at the Warner Textile Archive to develop practical experience in collections management working with the library and reference collection held by the Warner Textile Archive. The collection includes books, periodicals, and theses on art, history and design. This opportunity is suitable for volunteers as well as students looking to complete placements or work experience as part of their studies.

Role Description

• Catalogue at item level, following data input policies, on collections management system CollectionsIndex+ to support improved access to the library and reference collection. 

• Cross check information on Collections Index + with index cards to include all relevant historic information.

• Work alongside the Archive team and experienced volunteers to support the Archive’s daily work, including conservation and research support.

• There is an opportunity to create a short article and related social media content about your experience of working with the collection.

Further Information

Full training and support will be given on all aspects of the role. No previous experience necessary. 

We are able to facilitate a flexible work schedule based on the individual’s existing responsibilities. For a student placement, we require a minimum of 10 days to provide meaningful work experience.

Some online training on cataloguing, the history of Warner & Sons, and collections care will be required prior to the student’s start date.

The role is not remote and will require travel to Warner Textile Archive, Silks Way, Braintree, Essex, CM7 3GB. We have a travel bursary of up to £50 per day which is able to offer support with travel costs and £5 per day for subsistence.

Computer facilities will be provided on-site.

About the Warner Textile Archive

The Warner Textile Archive is a significant collection of design, business, economic and social history of textile manufacturing firm Warner & Sons, based in Braintree between the dates of 1870 – 2001. The Warner Textile Archive is the largest collection of an individual textile manufacturer available in the public domain in the United Kingdom. We hold over 100,000 administrative records, paper designs, trial samples, manufacturing equipment and textiles of Warner & Sons, their predecessors and successors, illustrating how furnishing textile manufacturing changed over more than 150 years. 

Essential Skills and Knowledge Required

• Excellent Microsoft Office software skills and general computer literacy, with the enthusiasm to learn new systems.

• Must be dedicated to working to a meticulous attention to detail in regards to accurate data inputting, spelling and grammar.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the willingness to work with a dedicated team of staff and volunteers of different ages and backgrounds.

• Must be able to follow clear instructions and ask questions when unsure.

We’re looking for 3 Support Group Volunteers over the age of 18 years old, based at 30 Breezemount Grove, Conling, Bangor, BT23 7TX.

You’ll be volunteering every Wednesday between 11am and 1pm.

As a support group volunteer, you will help with the running of the group. The role is designed to suit the needs of the group, and the skills of people offering support. If you enjoy getting to know your community, working with others and making a real difference then this is the role for you.

Join the Boards of the Mary Ward Settlement, the Mary Ward Legal Centre and the Blackfriars Settlement at a pivotal time for the charities, as the Settlement has relocated to purpose-built accommodation in Stratford. The Mary Ward Settlement has a proud heritage as part of the Settlement Movement which developed in the late 19th Century as a response to urban poverty and social problems arising from industrialisation. Mary Ward founded the Settlement in 1892 to “provide public education and social service for the benefit of the community” at a time and in an area where great wealth and great deprivation stood side by side, much as they do today – the Settlement’s work continues to be important.

Currently the Settlement delivers its services via:

· The Mary Ward Centre – an Institute of Adult Learning and an adult and community learning provider offering a wide range of learning opportunities for local and pan London residents funded primarily by the Greater London Authority.  Most accredited provision is at Level 2 or below in Essential Skills (ESOL, English and Maths and Digital Skills.  There is also a significant and thriving non-accredited offer of courses ranging from 12 weeks to one day workshops, the majority of which are Art and Design. 

· The Mary Ward Legal Centre – providing free specialist legal advice on housing, welfare benefits and debt. We also provide free legal advice as part of our pro bono clinic in the areas of employment, housing, small claims, consumer, and family.

· The Blackfriars Settlement – providing services to the community including health and well-being for older people, and mental health and wellbeing services to support people achieve their goals and stay well.

Volunteer International Fundraising & Grants Officer

Universe of Life Organization (ULO) is seeking a motivated and committed volunteer to support our international fundraising and grants development. This is an opportunity to contribute to the development of an organisation with an international vision and to help mobilise resources for programmes supporting vulnerable communities.

About ULO

Universe of Life Organization (ULO) was founded in Cameroon in 2017 with a vision to serve humanity with love, dignity and solidarity. ULO is preparing an important new chapter in its development, including the establishment of ULO UK in London and the strengthening of its international programmes and partnerships.

The role

The volunteer will support ULO in identifying suitable funding opportunities, researching potential funders and developing strong grant applications and funding proposals.

Key responsibilities include:

• Researching trusts, foundations, charities, institutions, companies and other potential funders.

• Identifying relevant grant opportunities, funding calls and partnership opportunities in the UK and internationally.

• Researching funder eligibility criteria, priorities, deadlines and application requirements.

• Maintaining a structured pipeline of potential funders, opportunities, deadlines and applications.

• Supporting the preparation, writing and adaptation of grant applications, concept notes and funding proposals.

• Supporting fundraising strategies and partnership approaches.

• Contributing to donor and funder research, follow-up and record keeping.

• Working collaboratively with ULO leadership and relevant volunteers to ensure proposals are accurate, consistent and evidence-based.

Immediate priority – ULO Cameroon Flagship Project

A key priority will be supporting resource mobilisation for ULO’s Women’s and Children’s Resilience and Empowerment Programme, a 12-month pilot programme designed to support 50 vulnerable women and 60 vulnerable children aged 5–15 in Bafoussam, West Region, Cameroon.

The programme focuses on women’s economic empowerment and livelihoods, children’s education and protection, psychosocial and emotional well-being, community resilience, partnerships and sustainability.

ULO has already developed the core project documentation and funding proposal. The volunteer will help identify appropriate funding opportunities and support ULO in presenting the programme to potential funders and institutional partners.

What we are looking for

We are ideally seeking someone with at least 3 years’ experience in fundraising, grant writing, trusts and foundations, partnerships, nonprofit development or a closely related field. Strong research, written English, organisation and communication skills are important.

Experience with UK or international funders is an advantage. French language skills are welcome but not essential.

This is a voluntary, unpaid position, initially requiring approximately 5–8 hours per week, with flexibility to be discussed according to availability and programme needs. The role is UK-based and can be undertaken remotely, with opportunities for London-based collaboration where appropriate.

We are looking for an organised and motivated individual with a passion for charitable causes to lead our Campaigns team.

The Campaigns team is responsible for curating the content available on the now-u app. This includes learning materials, actions and charitable campaigns designed to inform people about social and environmental issues, inspire them to get more involved and make it easier for them to take meaningful charitable action.

As Campaigns Lead, you will lead a small team of 1–2 Campaign Researchers and support the regular development and curation of new campaign content.

You will also have the opportunity to help shape our content strategy going forward, with the aim of engaging more people in impactful charitable action.

The role involves working closely with other department leads and contributing to wider organisational strategy.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and support a small team of 1–2 Campaign Researchers.
• Run fortnightly Campaigns team meetings.
• Guide the team in researching and curating new campaign content.
• Quality check content before publication.
