Hopian is a registered charity that provides advice and support for adults and children who have experienced Domestic Violence and Abuse through the provision of refuge accommodation and community support services. We also provide support and access to counselling for people affected by Child Sexual Exploitation.
The Role of Trustee and executive Trustee roles are voluntary positions. A Trustee for the Board is expected to meet the requirements of the board in line with the charities governing documents, governing good practice and legal requirements. Trustee Responsibilities :
The Board as a whole is collectively responsible for the success of the charity. A Trustee is a Board Member and has a number of responsibilities in order to ensure robust management of the charity including:
- Make decisions objectively in the interests of the charity.
- Implement Hopian’s Vision, Mission, and Values.
- Lead on the aims and objectives of Hopian by raising awareness of domestic and sexual abuse, and child sexual exploitation and abuse and its impact on individuals and their families.
Trustee Duties :
- Ensuring that the organisation pursues its stated objects (purposes), as defined in its governing document, by developing and agreeing a long-term strategy.
- Ensuring that the organisation complies with its governing document (i.e. constitution or memorandum and articles of association), charity law, company law and any other relevant legislation or regulations.
- Ensuring that the organisation applies its resources in pursuance of its charitable objects (i.e., the charity must not spend money on activities that are not included in its own objects) .
- Ensuring that the organisation defines its goals and evaluates performance against agreed targets.
- Safeguarding the good name and values of the organisation.
- Ensuring the effective and efficient administration of the organisation, including having appropriate policies and procedures in place.
- Ensuring the financial stability of the organisation.
- Protecting and managing the property of the charity and ensuring the proper investment of the charity’s funds.
- To work in the interests of the charity and not for personal gain.
- To ensure that the Board Members takes proper professional advice on matters in which it does not have competence.
- Following proper and formal arrangements for the appointment, supervision, support, appraisal and remuneration of the chief executive.
In addition to the above statutory duties, each trustee should use any specific skills, knowledge or experience they have to help the board of trustees reach sound decisions. This may involve scrutinising board papers, leading discussions, focusing on key issues, providing advice and guidance on new initiatives, or other issues in which the trustee has special expertise.
Tasks:
- To work with other Board Members to form an effective governing body for the charity.
- To attend meetings and to read papers in advance of meetings.
- Ensure that the charity’s focus places services users centrally.
- To understand and be committed to the mission of the charity.
- To maintain a long-term overview of the charity and its work.
- To make strategic and major decisions about the charity objectives, policies and procedures.
- To attend sub-group meetings as appropriate.
- To participate in other tasks that may arise from time to time such as interviewing for new staff, helping with appeals and fundraising.
- To keep informed about the activities of the charity and wider issues which affect its work.
- To monitor and evaluate the work of the charity on a regular basis. This includes receiving reports from staff, staff supervision, receiving feedback from service users and other agencies .
- To ensure that the charity is a good employer of its paid and voluntary staff .
- Provide opportunity for staff to meet with the board.
Person Specification
We are looking for a Trustee who has an understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities, and liabilities of trusteeship. It is expected that a Trustee takes ownership to develop and maintain this understanding and application of duties. In addition to having:

Time Requirements

HHCT - Trustee Role
Our trustees play a vital role in making sure that Harlow Health Centres Trust (HHCT) achieves its core purpose of providing first class Primary Healthcare facilities and promoting community healthcare and wellbeing initiatives. The Trustees oversee the overall management and administration of the charity. They ensure that HHCT has a clear strategy linked to key stakeholders in West Essex and East Hertfordshire. Just as importantly, they support and challenge the operations team to implement the strategy to enable the Trust to grow to deliver first class primary Healthcare facilities. By delivering this primary function efficiently the Trust can generate surpluses which support community healthcare and wellbeing initiatives.
As a small charity, there will be times when the trustees will need to be actively involved beyond Board meetings ie as working Trustees. This may involve leading or participating in subgroups, leading discussions with stakeholders, developing key issues, providing advice and guidance on new initiatives, representing the Trust externally, or on issues in which the trustee has a special expertise.
The Trust currently has 3 Sub committees led by appropriate Trustees, these are Finance and Audit, Estates and Grants and Donations

Rainbow Migration, the longest-running UK charity dedicated to supporting LGBTQI+ people through the asylum and immigration system, is seeking a trustee who is or has been a refugee due to persecution as an LGBTQI+ person. This is part of an ongoing commitment to increase leadership in the organisation by people with lived experience of the issues we work on.
We are looking for someone who is passionate about our vision that LGBTQI+ people can settle in the UK and lead fulfilling lives, and our mission to support LGBTQI+ people through the asylum and immigration system and influence policy and practice.

The role of trustees
Trustees are volunteers who bring their skills and experience to shape our strategic direction. They have legal responsibility for the charity, ensure good governance, and make sure our finances and resources are used well to implement our mission. Trustees also play a role as ambassadors for the organisation and our work.
Trustees do not get involved in operational decision-making. For example, decisions on which social media platforms we use or what group activities we run for service users are taken by staff.
Because trustees are volunteers, they do not receive payment for their time. Rainbow Migration can pay your costs when incurred solely for fulfilling trustee duties (e.g. travel, phone top-ups if needed exclusively for trustee work).

Time commitment
We are looking for people who can commit to being a trustee for at least three years. Trustees can then be re-elected for another three years. The maximum term limit for our trustees is nine years (in line with Charity Commission guidance).
Trustees meet on a weekday evening, from 6 to 9 pm, five times per year. There may be additional meetings in 2026 as part of our work on anti-oppression and to develop our next organisational strategy.
Meetings are usually held on Zoom except in December when we meet in-person in London, with an informal dinner first. For in-person meetings, travel costs (and meals and accommodation if relevant) can be covered.
You will need to spend two to four hours reading 8 to 30 papers before each meeting. Papers are provided a few days in advance of meetings. The “Board Buddy” (see below under Support for Trustees) can help with understanding them. You can also ask to meet with the Executive Director or Chair to explain them.
You can see examples of topics of discussion at board meetings in appendix 2 of the application pack.
You will also need to give some time between meetings. This includes, for example:
- Spending 10 to 30 minutes reviewing and correcting the minutes (written record) of the last board meeting
- Spending 30 to 60 minutes reviewing and giving feedback on documents, such as a new or updated draft organisational policy (e.g. data protection, safeguarding, health and safety)
- Reading and responding to emails within one or two days.
The board has two subcommittees: one on HR and one on finance. You may be asked to join one of these a few months after you become a trustee. If you do, there will be up to four more meetings a year and there will be papers to read for each of these meetings.
Support for trustees
We provide numerous resources for trustees. Below are some examples but they are not exhaustive and we are open to suggestions. Support can be accessed throughout the time someone is a trustee.
Training:
- We can pay for trustees to access training on good governance, the duties of a trustee, and charity finance.
- We give access to webinars and online training e.g. on safeguarding and cyber-security.
- We provide internal training (by staff) on areas such as safeguarding and data protection.
One-to-one support:
- New trustees have induction meetings with Rainbow Migration staff.
- An existing trustee can act as a “Board Buddy” for new trustees, which includes formal and informal meetings and support around board meetings and papers.
- We can help you to find a mentor e.g. The Experts by Experience Employment Initiative can provide mentoring for people with lived experience of migration.
- We can discuss accommodations that are needed for disabled people and other ways to ensure trustees feel fully included and able to participate

You could be the Chair-designate of Reading Community Learning Centre, a charity serving the needs of local refugee, asylum-seeking and migrant women. Set up in 2007, we are a Charitable Company that helps often-marginalised women to achieve their individual potential, through helping them improve their English, building confidence, making friends, volunteering locally, gaining qualifications or securing a job.

About the role:
We’re looking for a woman to volunteer to lead our Board of Trustees, to work with other trustees and our CEO to shape our future supporting and empowering women. Women from global-majority/minority-ethnic communities are especially encouraged to apply.
If you can think and lead strategically, help us plan long-term, you have the primary skills needed by our Chair. Support from our employees is always available, as they will be dealing with the day-to-day running of the organisation.

Age UK Notts are seeking individuals who would like to be considered as a volunteer for our Companion Service.
Volunteers will be supporting people in their own homes and in the community within Nottingham and Nottinghamshire and ideally, we ask all applicants to provide a minimum of 1 hour volunteering a week.
The companion service volunteer can choose to be:
• A companion within the person’s home
• A companion outside the person’s home
Examples of the type of support the service offers include:
• Supporting an older person/s hobbies and interests or simply chatting with them in their own home on a regular basis.
• Supporting with digital access & building confidence skills & motivation to access the opportunities of the internet.
• Supporting the person outside of their home e.g., by accompanying them on a walk, to the shops, to a café, garden centre, theatre or cinema or other social activities / community groups.
• Where appropriate, supporting the older person to access other services through information and signposting or referring to the Companion Service Coordinator for support.
We are looking for the following skills/interests:
• Individuals with a genuine interest in the wellbeing of older people who are committed to volunteering on a regular basis.
• Commitment to complete our Volunteer Report Form accurately and regularly.
• Ability to travel for visits in the local community either by car or public transport for those volunteers who choose to participate in this type of activity.
• Digital literacy for those volunteers who choose to participate in this type of activity.

Community Development Volunteer
Our Community Development Volunteers undertake an administrative role that provides support to our Community Development Co-ordinator in a variety of ways.
As a Community Development Volunteer in England, you might:
- conduct online research
- contact local community groups to build relationships with them and understand their needs
- attend events to raise awareness or present our work
- engage with project participants on social media
- deliver promotional material in a variety of locations
Most volunteering will take place Monday to Friday between 09:00 and 17:00. You will need to be over 18 years old and be living in the UK. Please note that there is very limited opportunity to volunteer at weekends or in the evening.
We are particularly keen to build connections with marginalised communities in Manchester, and so ideally we are looking for volunteers who are already part of, or happy to get involved with, local groups

As our LGBT+ Community Space Volunteer, you will support the lead facilitator to run inclusive and creative employability workshops that support LGBT+ young adults (aged 18-30) to build confidence, develop soft skills, and strengthen social connections with fellow peers.
You will help create a welcoming, supportive environment where our services users feel safe enough to express themselves, establish a sense of belonging, and engage in creative learning.
You will be working collaboratively with other team members of Blossom to play a key role in delivering engaging, accessible sessions that center community, creativity, and both personal and professional growth.
You will also be offered the opportunity to get involved with further “Train the Trainer” sessions to develop your own skills to help strengthen your facilitation and leadership.
RESPONSIBILITIES:

Aid Box Community (ABC)
We are looking to appoint someone with leadership qualities and high motivation, initially
to join us as a trustee in June and then to take on the position of Chair in November. In
close co-operation with our dedicated team of trustees and inspirational director, you will
be guiding our charity through the next phase of our journey. This is a very exciting
opportunity to play an important role in the development of Aid Box’s strategy over the
next 5 years and to oversee the deepening of our charity’s impact on our community,
made possible by our recent move into our new home.
About Aid Box Community
We are a charity based in Bristol and for nearly nine years have been providing vital support, supplies and sanctuary to men women and children seeking asylum in this city. You are welcome to come and have a look at the work we do by visiting, by prior arrangement, our Welcome Hub and Free Shop.
What are our trustees responsible for?
We are all jointly responsible for:
- The overall management of our charity.
- Setting and monitoring Aid Box’s strategic direction and ensuring it is financially sound.
- Ensuring the charity carries out the purposes set out in our constitution for the benefit of our community and in line with the Charity Commission’s guidance.
Main duties and responsibilities as a Chair:
- leading our charity’s strategic direction in close collaboration with the board and our director.
- Chairing quarterly trustee meetings as well as our HR sub committee meetings.
- Representing trustees in contacts with other charities and organisations.
This role is for you if:
- You have leadership experience (formal or informal), either within or outside the charity sector.
- You have specialist skills that may benefit Aid Box Community. Motivated by ABC’s vision, mission and values, in particular upholding the basic human rights of refugees and asylum seekers.
- Teamwork and communication skills with ability to listen and build a consensus.
- Living in or near Bristol . You would like to join a fantastic community of staff, volunteers and service user

We will provide practical support, principally through our deputy chair, along with a full induction programme including the legal framework and other key areas such as safeguarding. During your time with Aid Box, you will be able to join training workshops relevant to your role as a trustee, along with the opportunity to be involved in a range of charity activities.
