The Befriender 'In Home' Volunteer will play an important role by providing companionship to someone we support at our supported living service by spending time with them, visiting them in the home and doing activities they enjoy. These might include chatting over a cup of tea, reading books, playing board games, etc.

Skills Required

· To be able to deal with information in line with our data protection and confidentiality procedures

Training required for this role (all delivered vis e-learning)

All these courses will take approximately 40-60 minutes, apart from the First Aid which is 2 hours.

SeeAbility Volunteer Drivers play an important role in the lives of those in need of a friendly driver. Many of the people we support have their own vehicles, so you will need to be happy to drive these. You will make a difference by being a reliable driver to take them to appointments and activities.

•  To be a confident driver with a full clean driver’s licence

• To be able to assist when necessary with sighted guidance/orientation

  To be kind and friendly, empathetic and patient

• To be reliable and punctual.

Commitment

• Each year, our Trustees are expected to attend four regular board meetings, from 5 to 7 pm in Central London. In addition, Trustees would attend potentially four meetings of any sub-committee of which they are a member. Further time is required for reading of papers before meetings.
• You would also receive invitations to various Childhood First events in the communities, which are optional but strongly encouraged to help better understand the work and feel a connection to the charity.
• We are particularly cognisant of the need to be flexible in the demands we make of Trustee colleagues. Each year there is an opportunity to meet with the Chair for mutual feedback and to discuss ways in which Trustees might wish to develop their roles.​

Successful candidates will be invited to attend a board meeting will be on 15 September 2026 in Central London.

Role details:

Equity, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EEDI) are at the heart of our work. We work with people with lived experience of MS, volunteers, and professionals to guide and direct our approach to EEDI.

The EEDI Reference Group is a group of people affected by MS who helped develop our previous EEDI strategy and now support the EEDI work in our more recent organisational strategy. They bring lived experience of marginalisation for example people from minoritised ethnic groups, the LGBTQ+ community, carers and disabled people.

This is an exciting opportunity to join our Equity, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EEDI) work. By attending monthly meetings you’ll use your lived and/or professional experience to provide advice, feedback, guidance and personal opinion on our EEDI work.

This is a home-based role, which will require attending online meetings of up to an hour, with up to 30 minutes of pre-reading and follow-up work before each one. 

What you’ll be doing:

· Attending online meetings

· Reading documents and preparing feedback

· Using your lived and/or professional experience to provide constructive and honest feedback on our ways of working, processes and future initiatives

· Representing the MS community and people from marginalised group(s) with lived experience

· Having confidence to speak and input into meetings

· Feeling passion for the MS Society and for EEDI in our work

· Showing awareness of EEDI in a broader context, to provide challenge outside of your lived experience

This is a varied role where local need shapes what you’ll be working on, but it often includes:
• Designing and making pieces of equipment for individuals with specific needs
• Using your practical skills working with metal, wood, plastic, or electronics (or a combination of them)
• Attending a monthly meeting of the local branch.

We can support you to develop the skills you need for this role, and there’s an induction that covers all the areas above. You’ll also have chance to discuss your role and any additional needs with us.

As a maintenance (handyman) volunteer at SeeAbility, you will support the supported living home in Banbury by maintaining a safe, functional, and pleasant environment for people we support and our teams.Volunteers needed for a few hours a week or fortnightly.

This position requires a reliable, skilled, and proactive individual who can carry out general maintenance tasks and assist with small repairs around the property. Your efforts will directly contribute to the well-being of the people we support and ensure that the home remains a comfortable and secure place for all.

Skills Required 

•   Perform general maintenance and minor repairs to the building and facilities, including but not limited to:  carpentry, painting, decorating and repairing

• Assist with the installation of furniture, fixtures, or equipment, ensuring they meet safety standards.

• Ensure that all tools and materials are properly maintained and stored safely.

• Help identify potential maintenance issues before they become problems.

• Report more complex repairs or safety concerns to the Home Manager

• Support the care home during renovation or redecoration projects.

• Work collaboratively with other volunteers and staff to ensure the upkeep of the home.

• Volunteers will not be asked to carry out any electrical or plumbing works

• Adhere to health and safety guidelines, ensuring all tasks are completed with care and in compliance with regulations

As a Volunteer Musician, you will bring joy, comfort, and connection to the people we support, by sharing live music. Your performances will provide meaningful engagement, foster a sense of community, and enhance emotional and mental well-being.

• Play musical instruments or sing for small groups or individuals.

Tailor performances to the preferences and needs of the people we support (e.g., familiar songs or soothing melodies).

• Encourage the people we support to sing along or participate in simple ways (e.g., clapping, tapping rhythms).

• Create a welcoming, inclusive atmosphere during your sessions.

• Adjust your style or volume to suit the home setting and individuals’ sensitivities.

• Be attentive to the emotional and physical responses of individuals during performances.

• Work with care home staff to schedule performances and understand the unique needs of the residents.

• Communicate any concerns or noteworthy interactions with staff.

Skills required

• Proficiency in at least one musical instrument or singing.

• Warm, friendly, and compassionate demeanour.

• Patience and adaptability to engage with people of varying abilities and preferences.

• A genuine interest in contributing to the well-being of the people we support.

To ensure the safety of the people we support, we require a DBS check and two satisfactory references before a volunteer role is confirmed. As you will be volunteering directly with vulnerable individuals, you will also be required to undertake safeguarding training, as well as any training which is specific to the role.

· Able to work independently from home

· Willing to attend meetings of your local branch
