Role Overview

We are seeking a passionate and proactive Volunteer Researcher to help us on our Insight and Understanding workstream; conducting primary and secondary research as well as providing guidance on commissioned research. This is a key voluntary role for someone with a background in social research who wants to use their skills to make a measurable difference in a sensitive but vital area of public benefit, increasingly recognised as an urgent issue and one in receipt of growing governmental attention.

Key Responsibilities

Depending on experience and availability, responsibilities may include:

• Conducting desk-based research and literature reviews (academic, policy, and grey literature)
• Contributing to the establishment of the organisation’s Research Ethics Policy
• Supporting the design of research projects, including research questions, methods, and tools
• Assisting with data collection (e.g. surveys, interviews, focus groups), where appropriate
• Supporting data analysis (qualitative and/or quantitative)
• Summarising findings into clear written outputs (briefings, reports, blogs, or presentations)
• Supporting evidence gathering for funding applications, policy submissions, or advocacy work
• Contributing to the maintenance of research logs, references, and documentation
• Adhering to the organisation’s research ethics and data protection policies at all times

What We’re Looking For

• Experience in social research, public policy, or social impact

Desirable

The successful candidates will be allocated to lead our FOI Team which supports our research projects nationally and locally by submitting and progressing Freedom of Information Requests. They should have excellent writing and speaking skills, IT literacy, and the ability to work well independently and in a team.

Responsibilities:

• Lead and oversee a small team in drafting, submitting and following up FOI requests in addition to supporting the research projects that require such data.

Donation Research Assistant (Volunteer)

International Aid for the Protection & Welfare of Animals (IAPWA) was founded in 2009 and aims to provide protection and improve the welfare of animals in need. Our first project is based in Borneo, where we provide a lifeline to thousands of dogs and cats every year in need of veterinary care and support. Our companion animal programmes have since developed in other countries, including Romania and Penang Island, as well as support programmes to help other species.

Museum Collections Volunteer Are you passionate about heritage and sharing St John’s story with the public? 

Would you like to work with our Museum team on Fabric of Community: St John Ambulance Uniform and Volunteer Identity, a two-year project to transform the way we care for and share our extensive uniform collection. 

his is a hands-on role that will give you the opportunity to work with historic objects, all while unlocking the potential of an important and fascinating collection. 

The project has been made possible with Art Fund support. What will you be doing? Working as part of a team to identify, audit and research the uniform collection. Sharing new discoveries through supporting blog posts and other public engagement activities. Representing St John positively and in line with our HEART values. 

Requirements for the role? An interest in the history of St John’s lifesaving work. Passion for sharing heritage with new audiences and making good-quality data accessible. Close attention to detail. Familiarity with Office 365. Volunteering will take place at the Museum of the Order of St John in London. 

Full training will be provided and no previous experience working in Museums or Archives required. How often will you be volunteering? The commitment is one day per week, Wednesdays, 10am – 4pm.
