Resourcing manager volunteer roles in Glasgow

The Biochemical Society is seeking to recruit three Independent Trustees for the Council of Trustees to serve an initial five-year term of office, with the potential to extend to a maximum eight year term, with the anticipated time commitment is approximately 12 days per year, for which reasonable expenses will be reimbursed where travel is required.

Our Trustees shape the direction of the Society and the delivery of our work; promoting the importance of the molecular biosciences as a discipline, facilitating the sharing of knowledge and expertise and supporting molecular bio-scientists across all career stages.

As an Independent Trustee you will work closely with the wider Trustee Council to set the Society’s strategy, maintain oversight of the organisations’ financial position and manage organisational risk. Contributing an independent voice to discussions, you will collaborate effectively with others for the benefit of the Society. Trustees gain valuable experience in board/committee work, board room dynamics and the overall governance of a charity and company, whilst helping to make a real difference for the molecular bioscience community.

The current board is a mix of Biochemical Society trustees and independent members who work closely with senior staff members to deliver the committee’s objectives.

We are looking for an individual who is excited about contributing to the Society’s endeavours over the coming three-year period. The successful candidate will have:
• Demonstrable experience in a similar position in a mid/large-sized corporate or charitable organisation;
• Comprehensive knowledge of financial planning and reporting, pension management, and the wider charitable landscape as it relates to financial management.

We’re on the lookout for a People Executive to join our busy people-first HR Team. This role is equivalent to a HR Assistant/HR Generalist position. In this role you will be:

• Taking ownership over our HRIS/HRM system, maintaining staff files, data, contracts and information in accordance with strict DPA/GPDR standar
• Working to issue, update and send out an array of HR correspondence from role offers, through to contracts through to outcome letters;
• ·Supporting our Leave of Absence system and process, screening leave requests, sending for departmental level approval and seeking medical evidence as required;
• Working on a patterned basis to monitor the People Team / People Services inbox, responding to queries, triaging and escalating more complicated queries to specialist colleauges;
• Note-taking meetings, investigations, disciplinaries and interviews as required;
• Supporting internal communication and culture through assisting with monthly staff newsletters, social events and reward events;
• ·Supporting with the development of industry leading Perks & Benefits including updating perks databases, discount codes and partner offers as required;
• Assisting with volume and specialist recruitment campaigns including posting job ads, longlisting candidates, shortlisting, and supporting interviews as required;

Role Purpose

The Deputy Head of Ethics & Research Reporting is a senior volunteer leadership role designed to provide strategic and operational resilience across the department. This role will initially serve as Interim Head of Ethics & Research Reporting during the Head of Department’s leave of absence, assuming full leadership responsibilities. When the Head returns in May, the Deputy will transition into the standard Deputy Head role, continuing to provide leadership continuity, oversight and support.

The Deputy Head works across both the Ethics Team and the Research Reporting Team, ensuring that ethical standards, research integrity and high‑quality reporting are upheld across all departmental activity.

Key Responsibilities

During Interim Headship (until May)

• Provide full strategic and operational leadership for the Ethics & Research Reporting Department.

Given the seniority and responsibility of this volunteer role, the following experience is required:

• A PhD is required, along with postdoctoral research experience, or significant academic or practical research experience at an equivalent level, demonstrating advanced expertise in research design, ethics, governance or reporting.

• Substantial experience in research ethics, research governance or research leadership, ideally across multiple projects or teams.

• Experience in strategic planning, departmental oversight or senior‑level decision‑making, whether in a volunteer, academic or professional context.

• A strong track record of ethical decision‑making, particularly in roles where judgement, integrity and risk assessment were central.

• Experience with research reporting, research communication or academic publication processes is highly beneficial.

• A strong interest in ethical governance, research integrity and maintaining high standards across research projects.

• Familiarity with GDPR and responsible data management practices, or willingness to develop this knowledge quickly.

• Experience working with volunteers or mixed‑experience teams is advantageous.

• A PhD is required, along with postdoctoral research experience, or significant academic or practical research experience at an equivalent level, demonstrating advanced expertise in research design, ethics, governance or reporting.

• Substantial experience in research ethics, research governance or research leadership, ideally across multiple projects or teams.

• Experience in strategic planning, departmental oversight or senior‑level decision‑making, whether in a volunteer, academic or professional context.
