Volunteering in the shop

Mary's Living & Giving for Save the Children is unique - a vibrant result of the generous gifts of local individuals and companies being turned around by the skills and passions of volunteer teams, to create a destination retail experience. Selling womenswear, menswear, shoes, and bags to household goods, our shops can be found in the London villages and bring in vital funds for Save the Children.

Our East Dulwich Shop Volunteers are in the middle of it all, and there’s plenty to get involved with. You might be sorting and pricing stock, engaging with customers, ringing items through the till, creating fantastic window displays or keeping our shop floor looking organised.

It’s up to you how much you commit. We have volunteers who support for a couple of hours a week and some do more. Many people volunteer either a morning or an afternoon each week - this is something that will be discussed at the selection stage, after you’ve applied. We would also love to hear from people willing to volunteer on Sundays.

We know that our shop teams are stronger when they are inclusive and representative of their communities. Everybody can make a real difference. People come to us for all sorts of reasons, from all backgrounds, and we will do what we can to find a role that works for you.

What happens next?

After you’ve filled in an application, we will invite you for an informal trial shift. It’s a great opportunity to visit the shop, meet some of our existing volunteers and have a go at some of the tasks that you would be supporting with as a shop volunteer. Hopefully allowing you to get a feel for the role and make sure it’s for you. We also ask for a couple of references (these don’t have to be formal workplace ones, just someone who has known you for over 6 months and isn’t related).

Read Easy provides free, confidential, one to-one reading coaching for adults who struggle with reading, through a network of volunteer groups. Read Easy groups are changing the lives of individual adults across the country by providing them with the support they need to learn to read, and in turn opening doors for them to all sorts of new opportunities in life. Outline of the IT Supporter role
It is amazing how much difference you could make to your local group by providing IT support, either remotely or in person. Even the smallest things like setting up email accounts, using video calling software and creating social media accounts can be a real challenge for some volunteers, so your expertise will make the world of difference to supporting your local group to help adults learn to read in your community.

The skills you will need
● Knowledge and previous experience of fundraising is desirable, though not essential.
● A willingness to seek out potential sources of funding.
● Experience of writing funding bids is desirable, though not essential.
● Good negotiating and influencing skills.
● The ability to use initiative and work independently.
● A willingness to abide by Read Easy policies and procedures.
● An open attitude that encourages two-way communication and willingness to ask for and offer support to the Team.
● A non-judgemental attitude and respect for others, with a commitment to equality and diversity, so that you can make everyone feel valued and included.
● Energy and enthusiasm with an average of three hours a month to commit to the role

We are looking for football coach volunteers to help lead and deliver our weekly football sessions to support residents to rebuild body and mind.

Session is currently being run in a park a 5 minute walk from Ditchmore Lane, Stevenage 

Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays 4 to 5pm

Project Resilience provides easily accessible opportunities for our hostel residents to take part in a variety of social and sporting activities to boost overall health and wellbeing.

We are looking for football coach volunteers to help lead and deliver our weekly football sessions to support residents to rebuild body and mind. 

Your responsibilities will include:

· Plan, prepare and deliver engaging weekly football sessions

· Helping with set up/tidying of any equipment 

· Managing and maintaining focus of residents to support their fitness progress and development

· Working closely with Project Resilience Coordinator, maintaining open lines of communication and feedback 

· Assist with any related events such as organising tournaments or community football events 

This role offers a dynamic and rewarding opportunity to inspire and mentor vulnerable residents, contributing to their health and personal growth. Your commitment to excellence in coaching and resident engagement will not only enhance your professional skills but also make a significant impact on the community.

You will need:

· Previous experience in coaching/running football sessions 

· Being able to work as part of a team as well as on your own initiative

· Being empathetic and understanding to the needs of vulnerable residents who may have differing fitness skills and levels 

· Some sort of formal sports training - doesn’t have to be specifically for football but we would like to see some level of education e.g. Level 2 gym instructor plus 

What we will provide:

· A full induction to the role and site will be provided

· You will be required to undertake mandatory e-learning and a menu of optional training will be made available 

· Ongoing supervision and support from your line manager

· Access to organisational events and celebrations throughout the year 

 Please note: You will be required to undergo a DBS check and we will need 2 x references.

As a volunteer Activity Worker, you will support the planning and delivery of engaging activities for families. Your role is to promote social interaction, wellbeing, and independence through meaningful and enjoyable activities. 

Key Responsibilities:

· Assist in preparing and facilitating group or one to one activities such as arts and crafts, games, music, exercise, discussions, and outings.

· Encourage and support participation from people we work alongside, adapting activities to meet a range of needs and abilities.

· Build positive relationships with families, promoting dignity, choice, and inclusion.

· Help to set up and tidy away activity materials and spaces.

· Support staff in monitoring and providing feedback on the engagement and wellbeing of participants.

· Maintain confidentiality and always uphold safeguarding and health and safety standards.

· Contribute to a warm, friendly, and respectful environment.

What We’re Looking For:

• Friendly, patient, and approachable with good interpersonal skills.
• Reliable, punctual, and committed to supporting others.

Hertfordshire’s Family Centre Service brings children’s centres, health visiting and school nursing together, to provide a more joined-up service for children, young people, and their families.

The centres deliver a range of support groups and activities for children and their families to help them be healthy, grow and develop. To make it easy for families to fit sessions and services around their busy lives, access is available from any Hertfordshire Family centre. We have locations across the entire county so please do enquire ensuring you have provided your postcode. 

Main Tasks/ Responsibilities/ Activities

To support Public Health Nursing teams by helping parents use baby weighing equipment in a welcoming and safe environment.

Key Responsibilities:

· Welcome parents, carers, and babies to the self-weigh session in a friendly and approachable way.

· Explain how to use the weighing equipment safely and accurately (training provided).

· Support parents to record their baby’s weight on growth charts or apps as appropriate.

· Ensure the weighing area is safe, clean, and ready for families to use.

· Provide reassurance and encouragement to parents and carers.

· Signpost any questions or concerns about a baby’s health or development to a Family Centre staff member

· Friendly, patient, and approachable.

· Confident in supporting parents to use simple equipment (training given).

Position Overview

The Head of People will be a key member of the leadership team, reporting directly to the CEO. This volunteer, unpaid role leads the People team (including HR Business Partners and Recruiting) and oversees People Operations, talent acquisition, and culture-building initiatives to ensure an inclusive, engaging, and high-performing environment. This role is fully remote.

Key Responsibilities

• People Operations & HR Strategy

  • Develop and implement HR policies, processes, and best practices that support the organization’s growth.

  • Oversee all aspects of people operations, including onboarding, performance management, compliance, and employee relations.

  • Ensure legal and ethical HR practices, even within a volunteer-driven environment.

  • Leverage HR technology and tools to streamline people operations.

• Talent Management

  • Develop and implement best-in-class volunteer and employee onboarding programs.

  • Create career development opportunities to enhance engagement and retention.

• Culture & Employee Experience

  • Champion a strong, mission-driven culture aligned with the organization’s values.

  • Develop employer branding and internal communications programs.

  • Drive initiatives to foster employee engagement, well-being, and a sense of belonging.

  • Lead DEI efforts across the organization.

  • Support leadership in resolving conflicts and improving team dynamics.

Required Qualifications & Experience

• Minimum of 10 years of experience in human resources in a leadership role.

• Experience leading an HR team, preferably in a nonprofit or volunteer-based organization.

• Strong knowledge of HR best practices, including talent acquisition, employee relations, and organizational culture.

• Proven ability to build and implement HR policies and programs from the ground up.

• Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and influence at all levels.

• Experience working in a remote and distributed team environment.

• Demonstrated passion for Solution Community’s mission and commitment to fostering a positive workplace culture.

Preferred Qualifications

• HR certification (e.g., SHRM-CP, PHR, or equivalent) is a plus.

• Experience managing volunteers and remote teams.

• Background in DEI initiatives and culture transformation.

Aim of this role
Research and Campaigns volunteers support our work to change the policies and practice that affect the lives of our clients.

As an R&C volunteer, you will be a part of the R&C team. You will:

• complete an induction to Citizens Advice and training for your role

• keep up-to-date with trends of the concerns affecting clients locally as well as areas identified by national Citizens Advice, and raise call for evidence

• research and gather quality information on key issues affecting local residents

• ensure all volunteers/staff are aware of the purpose of Research and Campaigns and how to write evidence forms

• produce useful, appealing and easily accessible campaign materials and publications for information purposes

• feed back to assessors and advisers on the results of their work and provide them with assistance in completing evidence forms

• help national Citizens Advice to carry out research about how certain issues affect clients in your local area

• gather case studies and client stories

• ensure that equality, diversity and inclusion are promoted in our R&C work

• adhere to Citizens Advice Merton and Lambeth’s (CAML) aims and principles

• comply with all relevant GDPR rules and regulations

Locations

This role is based in our Mitcham office with some occasional traveling to our other offices in Morden and Kennington. All three offices are well-connected to public transport, and the office in Mitcham has a car park.

We will reimburse all reasonable out of pocket travel and lunch expenses.

What we are looking for

• excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, are essential

• understanding of the importance of Research and Campaigns work in identifying key current social issues, and their potential impact on clients

• the ability to build and maintain professional relationships and contribute constructively as part of the R&C team, as well as wider CAML team

• the ability to give feedback clearly and sensitively

• good report-writing skills with the ability to condense important information and explain to a range of audiences. Able to research, analyse and explain complex information

• good organisational and time management skills with the ability to work towards set deadlines

• ability to work on own initiative, within given guidelines

• confidence in using a range of IT software to research and analyse data

Satisfactory references are required before joining the charity.

Commitment
We are looking for volunteers who are able come to our office for at least one day per week.
