CHASE Africa is a UK-based international NGO that supports local partners in East Africa to improve health and wellbeing in marginalised rural communities. We are looking for a Trustee with finance skills, to replace our current Treasurer. You will provide scrutiny and oversight of the work of CHASE Africa, with a particular focus on financial issues.  You will use your financial knowledge and experience to monitor the financial administration of the charity and report to the Board of Trustees on its state of financial health and provide the board with the confidence and knowledge to make good strategic decisions. 

This is an exciting opportunity for someone with extensive financial expertise, who is seeking a voluntary position where they can apply their skills to a meaningful mission.

Since its inception 12 years ago, CHASE Africa has grown from scratch to an income in 2025 of over £830,000 – delivering over 1.5 million healthcare and family planning services to often isolated rural communities. We have a strong and highly motivated staff team and a thriving network of local partners that has expanded from Kenya into Uganda and, later this year, Tanzania.

CHASE Africa’s projects have already brought healthcare and empowerment to tens of thousands of lives, particularly for women and girls, mitigating poverty and helping protect local environments.It has the capacity and opportunity to greatly extend its impact – both geographically and in terms of numbers reached.

We are a small but dedicated team based in Somerset, committed to a collaborative approach to partnership. We're currently going through an exciting period of transition and growth, with a new CEO in 2022, a new charitable structure in 2023, and a new Finance Manager at the start of 2026. Your role will be vital in helping us achieve our future goals.

The Role

• Liaise with CEO and Trustees to ensure the financial viability of the organisation’s strategy 
• Advise on the financial implications of CA’s strategic plan (3 year) 
• Present CA’s financial position and broader context at Trustees Board meetings 
• Support the finance manager with the production of an annual budget 
• Ensure that the Board is aware of its financial duties and responsibilities and the need to comply with all legislation 
• Take a lead in interpreting financial data for fellow Board members 
• Ensure that all financial policies, procedures and the appointment of external financial advisors are reviewed on a regular basis
• Ensure relevant financial policies are in place as required by the charity commission 
• Be willing to be available to support the charity’s CEO and Senior Finance Manager as needed 
• Review the monthly management accounts report and cashflow with the CEO and finance manager 
• Liaise with senior staff to ensure financial reports are user friendly for non-finance trustees

About You

• Good background in financial management and analysis
• Able to communicate financial information clearly and to people with different levels of financial and data literacy. 
• Knowledge and experience of finance practice relevant to voluntary and community organisations. 
• Have an excellent ability to interpret financial information and the confidence to raise questions and challenge 
• Have a good understanding of, or be willing to learn, the rules and regulation around charity finance 
• Have the ability to think creatively and strategically, exercising good and impartial judgement 
• Knowledge of current accounting processes, tools and procedures 
• High proficiency in Excel, Powerpoint for analysis and presentation 
• Understands and accepts the legal duties, liabilities and responsibilities of Trustees, and the difference between governance functions and management functions  
• High level of integrity and sound judgement 
• Commitment to CA’s vision, purpose and culture and its way of working 
• Able and willing to devote the necessary time to the role 

Additional Desirable 

• CCAB/CIMA qualified professional or qualified by experience in financial management
• Awareness and understanding of the campaigning world and the health community in developing countries. 
• An interest in international development and the issues we are supporting our partners to tackle in East Africa.

Befriender/Independent Visitor Needed across Cumberland. 

 An Independent Visitor is a positive adult role model who provides support and friendship to a young person in care. You will enjoy fun activities together which will give the young person unforgettable memories and experiences. Your consistent friendship will help the young person raise their aspirations, learn new skills, build self-esteem, confidence, and resilience.

We are looking for fun, reliable, and enthusiastic volunteers from all different cultures, backgrounds, and experiences. You do not need any formal qualifications to become a volunteer, but it is helpful if you have some knowledge and practical experience of involvement with children and young people.

Children and young people who are looked after need an adult who has time to spend with them, take them on activities and be someone they can talk to and trust. You can fit your visits in around your own time and work commitments. We only ask that you can commit to a few hours once per month for a minimum of 2 years. 

We urgently require volunteers as an Independent Visitor for children and young people in care. As a volunteer you will:

• Have fun, take young people on outings and maybe share a hobby, sport or interest.
• Offer support and a listening ear and be a positive influence in a young person's life and help build self-esteem and confidence.

From welcoming babies into the world on the Jessop Wing, supporting cancer care at Weston Park, specialist care at the Royal Hallamshire, Charles Clifford and the Northern General, to improving the mental, physical and social wellbeing of people in our communities. The support provided by Sheffield Hospitals Charity helps to improve the lives of people across Sheffield from patients and their families to our NHS staff who take care of them.

The Chair plays an important role in the governance of the charity, providing leadership to the Board of Trustees to work together, reach good collective decisions, and manage any conflicts. The responsibilities of our Chair are as follows:

Oversight and governance 

• Lead the Board of Trustees to support development of and approve the charity’s strategy and corresponding plan. 

• Lead the Board to make key strategic decisions in the organisation’s best interests and in line with its charitable objects. 

• Lead the Board in ensuring there is financial strategy oversight, and the organisation’s resources are managed responsibly. 

• Ensure the organisation is operating in line with charity law, charity regulation and its own governing document. 

• Build an effective, diverse board that can work well together for the good of the organisation. 

Working with trustees 

• Support trustees with development and annual one-to-one reviews. 

• Help the Board work as a team, drawing on specific expertise, lived experience, and diversity of thought across the Board. 

• Chair board meetings and work with the CEO and EA to ensure they are well planned and minuted and that actions are circulated and followed up. 

• Ensure trustees are given the information they need to make decisions effectively. 

• Support the recruitment of trustees, identifying any skills or knowledge gaps. 

• Build a diverse board that functions in an accessible and inclusive way. The

Chair-CEO relationship 

• Manage the relationship with the CEO, providing appropriate challenge and support to help them effectively lead the charity. 

• Conduct the CEO appraisals and reviews and support their leadership development. Lead on CEO recruitment. 

• Relate any concerns of the Board to the CEO and Senior Leadership Team. 

• Work with the CEO to make sure the Board has all the information required, in a timely manner, to make strategic decisions. 

Ambassadorial responsibilities 

• The Chair may be required, from time to time, to act as a champion and ambassador for the Charity. 

Person specification

Candidates will need to demonstrate that they have the necessary experience and will need to demonstrate the following skills, experience, and attributes. 

Essential 

• Passion for the National Health Service and an understanding of the role of health charities. 

• An ongoing and meaningful connection to Sheffield and good standing within the city. 

• Experience as a board member, trustee, non-executive director, or chair. 

• Strong comprehension of charity law, regulation, and the roles and responsibilities of a charity chair and trustee. 

• Skilled in strategic planning, financial management, risk management, and organisational performance. 

• Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to engage, influence, and negotiate with a range of senior stakeholders diverse in sector and profession. 

• Capable of building and maintaining relationships in a complex stakeholder environment with competing priorities. 

• Robust communication skills, both written and verbal, and the ability to communicate complex information to a range of diverse stakeholders. 

• The ability to lead effectively and inclusively during times of transformational change within and beyond an organisation. 

Desirable 

• Previous chairing experience at the non-executive level. 

• Experience in working within the health and social care and/or charity sectors – either as an employee or appointee. 

• Experience in charity fundraising, income generation, marketing and communications. 

• Understanding of health-related research and innovation and impact assessment skills. 

• Well versed in people management, wellbeing and learning and development.

Our Independent Visitor Volunteers provide consistent and supportive relationships to children and young people in care, offering emotional support, companionship, and guidance through shared activities and time together.  The Independent Visitor plays a vital role in helping the young people build confidence and feel secure while enhancing their personal, social, and cultural development.

As an Independent Visitor Volunteer in England, you might:

• support the child/young person to experience enriching activities that contribute to their personal and cultural development 
• engage in activities such as pursuing hobbies, meeting for meals, or socialising in a community setting 
• listen to and support the young person, fostering a sense of safety and trust 
• help the young person develop social skills and increase their involvement in their community 
• develop a positive and lasting relationship, ensuring the young person feels valued and supported

You will need to be over 18 years old and be living in the UK. Please note that the Independent Visitor Volunteers generally volunteer at evening and weekends due to the children’s and young person’s availability.

Our fundraising volunteers use their passion for cats and people to raise the vital funds needed to help more cats and kittens in need. What we need from you

This is a really flexible role, you can choose what you’d like to get involved with, for example: 

• face-to-face fundraising. Organising or helping with fundraising events, running supermarket collections and fundraising stands, monitoring collection tins 

• online fundraising. Setting up online appeals and writing impactful cat case studies that maximise donations

• marketing. Spreading the word about our fundraising activities, for example on social media and with the local press  

• completing administration. Processing donations, sorting and recording donated goods, completing Gift Aid paperwork

● championing our work. Getting involved with developing new fundraising ideas and increasing community engagement

● photography. Capturing images of cats in care, cats we are helping, events and all things Cats Protection

Our fundraising team leaders have the exciting and varied role of inspiring our fundraising volunteers to plan and deliver local fundraising events. Using their passion and imagination, they oversee a small team of fundraising volunteers who come together to raise the vital funds needed to cover costs such as veterinary bills and food. Our fundraising team leaders support their team of volunteers in all aspects of their roles, making sure our volunteers are happy, confident and supported.

Time expectation

Our fundraising team leaders usually spend three to four hours per week in this role, which is flexible and can be shared by more than one volunteer if needed.

Community Engagement volunteers help to raise awareness of the support available for deaf children and their families through engagement with community and voluntary groups, and/or faith-based groups and/or other support organisations. This role will help us to better support communities, in order to build trust and ensure that any barriers to support are understood and overcome.

About you 

• Confident, friendly, and empathetic   

• Are committed to the vision and ambition of the National Deaf Children’s Society  

• Want to make a difference to deaf children and their families 

• Have knowledge of (or willingness to learn about) deafness and local services for deaf children 

• We particularly welcome applications from people who have lived experience of a particular community, in this case East European communities in Kent, and an understanding of the potential barriers faced by those communities 

• Knowledge of a prominent language used in the community beyond English, such as Polish or Romanian would be an advantage but is not essential

• At different locations within your local community in the Kent area. Thanet and Margate in paricular

Tasks will be varied depending on the needs of the community. As examples, they could involve:   

• Engaging with community groups, faith-based groups and/or other support organisations 

• Providing information to families about deafness and signposting them to appropriate support  

• Supporting with the planning of events and activities aimed at bringing families together

Support and training 

You will be provided with: 

• Training to support you in your role, including Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, safeguarding, informed choice, and deaf awareness   

• Feedback on the support you contribute and the resulting outcomes  

• A named point of contact at the National Deaf Children’s Society & on your assignment  

• Reimbursement of agreed expenses such as travel costs  

• Clear information about what to do and who to contact if you are worried about something  

• The opportunity to feedback how the role works to improve it for the future  

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of families, children and young people. You will be asked to return a self-disclosure form, complete an Enhanced DBS Check, provide references, and complete our essential training.

Do you enjoy swimming?   
 
We are looking for a friendly volunteer to spend time with a gentleman we support and enjoy time in the pool together! 

If you would like to make a difference and make a great friend along the way, we would love to hear from you!     

Activities will include: 

• Swimming with the gentleman we support
• Helping to ensure he is safe and having fun
• Being there for company and friendship at the pool 

There will always be trained support workers present at the pool with you. 

 
 We are looking for someone who is:  

• Friendly, caring and enthusiastic
• Confident in the water
• Reliable/dependable and willing to commit to volunteer regularly 
• Comfortable chatting with people with learning disabilities and autism     

A DBS check and two-character references will be required for this role.

Our volunteers play a vital role in our work and in return, we support them with:

The National Youth Advocacy Service is a wonderful children's rights charity dedicated to supporting and empowering young people who have experienced care.

We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers in Swindon to befriend and mentor a young person in care.

This is a rewarding opportunity to make a real difference in a young person's life!
