Microbiology Society is looking to find a new voluntary Chair of its Audit, Risk and Evaluation Committee Please see the role description along with the Terms of Reference for the Committee.

The Chair will use their experience and knowledge to provide an external perspective on the delivery of the annual audit; the risk management of the Society’s activities; and the evaluation of those activities.

About the volunteer role

To provide our volunteers with opportunities to gain a variety of skills and experience, we offer them a range of volunteer roles to choose from, which include:

• Stock preparation volunteer
• Volunteer shop sales assistant
• Volunteer stock generation assistant
• Volunteer window dresser/Merchandiser
• Specialist knowledge volunteer (antiques and collectables)
• Specialist knowledge volunteer (books and entertainment)
• Housekeeping volunteer

Key tasks

There is a variety of tasks within the above mentioned roles that our volunteers get involved with, including:

• Welcoming and assisting customers with their purchases, providing them with great customer service and a delightful shopping experience
• Receiving donated items from members of the public
• Sorting, steaming, tagging and preparing donated items for sale
• Creating visually appealing window and in-store displays
• Keeping the shop floor well stocked, clean and coordinated
• Processing sales and serving at the till
• Signing up gift aid donors
• Stock rotation
• Identifying special or valuable items within donated stock

The Wren Project is a volunteer-led charity that provides free, remote, one-to-one, ongoing listening support for people in distress and living with autoimmune disease. There are over 120 autoimmune diseases currently diagnosed by the NHS and these include Lupus, Multiple Sclerosis and Crohn's disease- they are all chronic illnesses which can have life altering impacts.

Volunteers at the Wren Project provide emotional listening support to people with autoimmune disease (our Wrens). In appointments, volunteers offer listening support, where Wrens can talk about how autoimmune disease is impacting their life, without giving advice or offering solutions. Volunteers join a regular fortnightly shift during which they meet with up to 2 Wrens in two 50-minute appointments. 

Volunteers do not need to have qualifications or any knowledge or experience of autoimmune disease. We are looking for warm, empathetic, caring and resilient individuals who want to help others and have the time to offer ongoing, non-judgemental, listening support. 

We are the only charity in the UK who provide support for all autoimmune diseases. Our vision is to build support and community for all four million people in the UK diagnosed with autoimmune disease. Our service would not be possible without the commitment, empathy and support of our volunteers.

WHAT VOLUNTEERING FOR US INVOLVES:

Application and training process:

• Send an application form via our website;

• Attend a group information and discovery conversation where you will learn more about the Wren Project and the listening role 

• Applicants will be invited to participate in a remote, 5-week training programme focusing on listening skills, courageous inquiry, turning towards difficulty and living with autoimmune disease;

• A final one-to-one assessment of readiness before being matched with a Wren.

• Please note, we access an applicant’s suitability for the role throughout the process.

The role:

• Join a regular fortnightly shift, whereby you will support two Wrens in two separate, one-to-one sessions of 50 minutes via telephone/video call/online.

• A self-reflective approach to learning and development supported by staff-led reflective practice sessions. Monthly attendance required for the initial six months.

• Access to ongoing support from other volunteers and the Operations team;

• Opportunities to support the charity in a variety of additional roles.

Who We Are Looking For:

Travel Hands is seeking a Skilled Volunteer with expertise in Public Relations to help shape and implement a targeted PR strategy that raises awareness of their work. The ideal volunteer will have experience developing media strategies, crafting press materials, and engaging journalists to build consistent and positive media presence.

Project Brief:

Travel Hands has built strong community trust and meaningful partnerships but now needs dedicated PR expertise to amplify its story and impact through the media. The organisation connects visually impaired people (VIPs) with trained Guides for safe and enjoyable walks across London — a service already featured by Forbes, ESA Business Applications, and Ability Today. Despite completing over 1,300 successful journeys and seeing growing demand from VIPs, traditional volunteer recruitment methods have not proven effective, leading to a shortage of Guides. A structured PR strategy is essential to increase public awareness and help meet their need for volunteers.

The Skilled Volunteer will:

• Develop a PR strategy and media outreach plan – identifying key journalists, media outlets, and storytelling opportunities for Travel Hands.
• Create press materials – including press releases, media kits, and pitch templates that showcase success stories and partnerships.
• Provide PR training for the internal team – ensuring they can confidently continue proactive media efforts beyond the project.

Travel Hands is a London-based social enterprise on a mission to make cities more inclusive for people with visual impairments. By connecting VIPs with trusted Guides, the organisation enables safe, enjoyable, and independent journeys through the city. It Takes A Village Crystal Palace CIC is seeking a Skilled Volunteer with expertise in fundraising strategy, income generation, and donor engagement. The ideal person will have experience identifying diverse funding streams, developing long-term sustainability plans, and advising grassroots or community-led organisations.

Project Brief:

It Takes A Village has grown organically over the last four years, supporting hundreds of families in the Crystal Palace area. Until now, the organisation has relied on small donations from service users and one-off grants. To secure its future, the team is now looking to design and implement a comprehensive fundraising strategy that will sustain and grow its core services.

This project will include:

• Identifying and evaluating new funding opportunities, including grants but particularly partnerships, corporate sponsorships, and community-based fundraising
• Designing a strategic fundraising plan that creates a clear roadmap towards financial resilience and long-term sustainability
• Mentoring and guiding senior leadership team and their advisory panel of community volunteers, empowering them to take ownership of future fundraising

Who You’ll Be Supporting:

It Takes A Village is an inclusive postnatal peer support community run by local mother and Breastfeeding Peer Supporter Emily Harper, and supported by expert practitioners. Their mission is to nurture the physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing of families from birth and beyond. The organisation provides restorative mum and baby meet-ups, provides community infant feeding support, workshops, and inclusive family events across South East London.

Your impact:

This role is vital in helping It Takes A Village strengthen its financial foundations, safeguard its services, and continue providing free, inclusive support to families feeling anxious, exhausted or isolated due to parenting. By building a reliable and strategic fundraising model, It Takes A Village can continue to empower parents, reduce isolation, and create a supportive local network that boosts community wellbeing.

As an Area President for Barking Dagenham and Newham Network – you will support the Network Lead; act as an ambassador to the local community on behalf of St John Ambulance and the Order of St John, promoting the charity’s objectives and our work within the local community.

You will have established links in the community and be able to help SJA achieve our charitable aims by developing relations both externally and internally with local units, volunteer managers, regional staff and with the County Priory Group and other Presidents. All you do will be aimed at supporting the area to fulfil our vision: ‘Everyone who needs it should receive first aid from those around them. Purpose: To secure funding for Youth Kaleidoscope by researching, writing and submitting high-quality grant and sponsorship proposals, and by tracking and reporting on grant applications and outcomes to ensure sustainability and growth.

Key Responsibilities

Grant & Sponsorship Proposals:

• Research funding opportunities from trusts, foundations, corporate sponsors, and statutory bodies. 

• Draft, tailor, and submit compelling grant and sponsorship proposals that align with Kaleidoscope mission and project needs. 

• Collaborate with relevant team members to gather data, impact stories, and supporting documents for applications. 

Grant Tracking & Reporting :

• Maintain an up-to-date log of all applications, deadlines, and outcomes. 

• Monitor the progress of applications and respond to funder queries as needed. 

• Prepare and submit timely progress and outcome reports to funders, ensuring compliance with grant conditions. 

• Analyse outcomes to inform future strategy and improve success rates. 

Additional Duties:

• Attend team meetings - 1 hour online on a fortnightly basis

• Contribute to the development of fundraising strategies and share insights on funding trends 

Essential Skills and Attributes

• Proven experience in grant writing, fundraising or bid writing (charity sector experience desirable). 

• High level of written and spoken English.
