Chair of Trustees - The Family Place Foundation

We are recruiting a new Chair of Trustees to lead our Board and support the next stage of our charity’s development.

Location: Remote, with occasional in‑person trustee meetings (typically once or twice a year) held in the Clyro/Herefordshire area.

Time commitment: Approximately 1–2 days per month. This includes six trustee meetings a year, occasional ad‑hoc discussions and light‑touch support between meetings (for example reviewing policies or responding to emails).

About us

Established in 2020, we are a small, well-established charity with a strong grounding and a clear purpose. We raise funds to provide support to adopted, fostered and kinship care children and their families to improve emotional wellbeing, strengthen relationships, and reduce the impact of early trauma. In collaboration with leading UK practitioners, we support the delivery of a range of services providing essential therapeutic care and family support that isn’t covered by statutory funding. Services offered include Family Activity Days, Specialist Clinical Workshops, Advisory Consultations and Family Respite Camps. We also work to raise awareness of the challenges faced by children who cannot live with their birth families. We are now seeking a Chair of Trustees to help guide the charity through its next stage of development, including shaping our emerging Family Foundations project, a significant new early‑years initiative for the charity, alongside our ongoing portfolio of funded projects delivered through our specialist partner. This is an exciting opportunity to join a dedicated Board and a small operational support team who care deeply about the families we serve and the long‑term sustainability of the organisation.

The charity is currently led by a Board of four trustees, supported by two part‑time operational staff and a small group of volunteers.

As Chair, you will provide leadership to the Board, ensure effective governance, and help the charity continue enabling the delivery of high‑quality, trauma‑informed support. You will work closely with the trustees and operational colleagues to help shape strategy, strengthen partnerships, and ensure the charity remains compliant, resilient, and focused on its mission. You will also play a key role in strengthening the charity’s governance and fundraising, which in turn enables the therapeutic delivery carried out by our specialist partner. 

A supportive handover will be provided to ensure a smooth and confident transition into the role.

Person Specification

We are looking for someone who brings:

• Warmth, clarity and good judgement, with a balanced, proportionate approach to governance.

• A genuine commitment to improving the lives of adopted, fostered and kinship care children and an understanding of the challenges faced by families affected by early trauma.

• Confidence in chairing discussions, helping the Board reach clear, well‑considered decisions.

• An understanding of good governance, including risk, safeguarding and compliance (or a willingness to learn).

• The ability to work collaboratively with trustees and our small operational support team, offering encouragement and constructive challenge while supporting the charity’s governance and fundraising role, which enables the specialist delivery work carried out by our partner.

• Strategic thinking, with the ability to help shape the charity’s direction and ensure long‑term sustainability.

• Reliability, integrity and a calm, steady approach, keeping the charity’s purpose at the centre of decision‑making.

• Meets the eligibility requirements to serve as a charity trustee, as set out by the Charity Commission.

Helpful but not essential:

• Experience of chairing a board or committee

• Experience in charity governance, education, social care, therapeutic work, or community leadership would be helpful, but we are open to a wide range of backgrounds.

• Lived or professional experience related to adoption, fostering, trauma or family support.

Youth Leaders work directly with young people in St John Ambulance Badger Setts and Cadet Units. By organising a mixed weekly programme, this role will support the learning and development of young people into the next generation of health citizens. Youth Leaders also help young people develop their confidence, teamwork skills, self-discipline, and generally encourage them to strive to be the best they can be, as well as supervise and support other adult volunteers in their team.

We are looking for Youth Leaders to support a new Cadet group we intend to open in Harleston. You will be provided with a comprehensive support package which will involve initially attending a few sessions at other groups to develop best practice and hone your skills . These would be in Stoke Holy Cross or Norwich Central. It is expected that our Youth Leaders work together to ensure an effective rota of 'term time' cover for this afterschool club. Volunteering with FCENS

About Us

Our mission: To support single homeless adults in Waltham Forest towards transforming their lives.

Forest Churches Emergency Night Shelter, FCENS, is an independent charity working to serve the needs of the single homeless adults in Waltham Forest. Our vision is that no one should need to be homeless in our borough and everyone has a place to go.

Volunteers contribute to the overall success of FCENS and are vital to the running of our Drop-in service and Night Shelter. We need support from the community to run our projects and make our clients feel welcome.

Purpose of role

As a Volunteer Homelessness Support Worker, you will provide your volunteering under the direction of our caseworking team, to provide practical support to clients experiencing homelessness. You will assist with carrying out assessments and triaging, identifying support needs and helping clients access appropriate services including housing, health, mental health, welfare benefits and signposting to immigration services.

This is an opportunity to make a real difference while gaining valuable experience within the homelessness and voluntary sector.

Key Responsibilities

You will undertake your volunteering at all times under the direction of our employed caseworking team.

You will not be expected to undertake tasks that you are not confident or competent to do.

Welcome clients in a friendly, respectful and non-judgemental manner.

Use the Trauma-Informed Care approach whilst supporting clients.

Complete client assessments using our assessment tools.

Triaging the assessments.

Identify immediate needs and risks, escalating concerns to staff where appropriate.

Would you like to be play an important role in helping clients with their Welfare Benefit, Housing, Debt and Employment issues?  If so, you're the person we need. You could make a real difference to people's lives.

Our adviceline (phone) assessors are the first line of contact with many of our clients and offer help to empower individuals to help themselves by signposting them to the appropriate organisations.  For more complex issues they arrange appointments with our advisory staff. You would also be helping with our Research and Campaigns by writing a short report about common or unfair problems that you encounter whilst talking to clients.

On a typical call you would explore the issue the client has called us about, assess the urgency of the problem and their ability to deal with it themselves and write a summary and outline next steps. 

Full training and ongoing support will be given.  You will learn about a range of issues that affect our clients and build valuable skills such as communication, listening and information giving which can increase your employability.

You will need to:

• be familiar with and be able to develop your skills using Microsoft Word and Excel
• be able to manage using multiple windows and online resources during client calls
• have excellent verbal and written communication skills
• be willing and able to learn about and follow the Citizens Advice aims, principles and policies, including confidentiality and data protection
• be willing to undertake training

Volunteering with Enfield Citizens Advice is one of the best ways that you can make a difference in your local community.  Our main support areas are Welfare Benefits, Housing and Debt where we offer advice or signpost clients to where to find information to help themselves.  We run a very busy service and you would be at the centre of supporting the service to run efficiently by supporting clients and our staff with a variety of admin and reception duties. 

We offer full training and cover travel expenses within the boundaries of the Borough of Enfield. 

Our volunteers come from a range of backgrounds, and we particularly welcome applications from disabled people, people with physical or mental health conditions, LGBT+ and non-binary people, and people from Black Asian Minority Ethnic (BAME) communities.

Seeking childcare for children aged 0-12 for a community arts project in Vauxhall. We are looking for volunteers to look after the children of our participants during our sessions.

The Amies Projects (part of Pan Intercultural Arts) are music and drama projects for women survivors of human trafficking, providing an uplifting and empowering space for participants to make friends, learn new skills and get creative together. We hold several sessions each week and provide childcare for all the participants who need it, with 2 childcare volunteers during each session. The sessions for the participants are in an adjacent room to the childcare space, meaning parents are nearby.

Description of role

To provide childcare for young people aged 0-12. During the session there is no set curriculum to follow. We encourage children to be creative, offering arts supplies eg play doh and crayons, as well as toys for creative play. Children will have food during the session, which will be provided either by the charity or by the parents depending on the age and preferences. Children will need to be supported to use the toilet, nappies changed etc. We ask that volunteers alert staff of any safeguarding issues arising.

Could you create video content for our YouTube, Instagram or TikTok?

Perhaps you could be interviewed.  Maybe you can provide a self-help tutorial.

No Panic is a national self-help charity, which supports people with a range of anxiety problems, including panic attacks, OCD, agoraphobia, social phobia and health anxiety.

We are looking for enterprising volunteers to make videos about anxiety, that viewers will find entertaining and helpful.

The videos could be about anxiety experiences, anxiety management or particular types of anxiety. You may know someone who has experienced anxiety, or you may have struggled with it yourself; all that you have learned can be passed on to viewers to help them understand and to know that they are not alone.

An ideal candidate will have experience of video production and editing - you may be asked for examples of your past work.

We are looking for someone who is creative and enterprising and who works well with others.

Desired qualities are also to be committed, motivated and proactive.
