The BDFA is seeking a new Volunteer Treasurer/Trustee to join our passionate and dedicated Board.

As a trustee, you will play a key role in shaping the strategic direction of the BDFA, ensuring strong governance, and helping to improve the lives of children, young people, and families affected by Batten disease across the UK.

The overall role of Treasurer is to maintain an overview of the organisation’s affairs, ensure its financial viability and ensure that proper financial records and procedures are maintained.

As our Treasurer, you will:

• Oversee, approve and present budgets, accounts and financial statements
• Assure that the financial resources of the organisation meet its present and future needs
• Prepare and present financial reports to the Board

Ideal Background:

Fully qualified chartered accountant/financial qualifications and experience. Some experience of charity finance and fundraising.

About us

Batten disease is a very rare genetic disorder that affects the brain and nervous system. Symptoms sometimes begin in infancy and sometimes later in childhood, after apparently normal early development. Occasionally it may start in adulthood. In individuals suffering from Batten disease, nervous system function steadily declines, causing a wide variety of neurologic problems, including loss of vision and seizures. The life expectancy of a child born with Batten disease can vary, depending on the form of the disease and the age of onset. Some children die in early childhood, while others may be able to live into their teens or twenties.

The BDFA was registered as a charity in 2001 and our mission is “to enable children and adults who are affected by Batten disease to live life to the full and to provide families with the care and support they need so that they do not walk this path alone.” The BDFA offers informed guidance and support to families and the professionals who work with them, as well as actively raising awareness, and promoting research into the management of Batten disease to improve patient care pathways and ultimately find a cure.

Right to Remain is seeking a member to join our Management Committee (MC) with specific expertise in EITHER fundraising strategy OR campaign leadership. As a Trustee, you will provide strategic governance while actively leveraging your network and skills either to secure resources or to amplify our mission for migrant justice. You will work alongside the MC to ensure the organization remains financially sustainable and politically impactful in its support of communities navigating the UK’s immigration and asylum system.

About our Management Committee

Our Management Committee plays a vital role in the governance of Right to Remain, ensuring we remain true to our vision, values and strategic objectives. Working closely with the Director and staff team, Committee members provide oversight, support and constructive challenge to help the organisation thrive as a key organisation within the migration justice movement. Management Committee members share collective responsibility for the organisation and are expected to act in its best interests at all times. As a small charity, members contribute both during and between meetings, drawing on their skills and expertise to support the organisation's development and sustainability.

Time commitment: approximately 6-8 hours per month, including six Board meetings per year, preparation and follow-up, and occasional involvement in working groups or ad hoc support. Committee members are appointed for a one-year term, renewable annually. This is a voluntary role, with reasonable expenses reimbursed

Key Responsibilities

Track A: Fundraising Specialist

-Help develop and oversee a comprehensive fundraising strategy aligned with the organization’s long-term goals.

-Oversee risk management related to public advocacy and ensure campaigns adhere to legal and ethical standards.

Shared Governance & Fiduciary Responsibilities (All MC Members)

-Participate actively in board meetings, contributing to decision-making on finance, HR, and strategic planning.

-Ensure compliance with charity law, regulatory requirements, and internal governance policies.

-Review and approve annual budgets, financial reports, and audit results.

-Uphold the organization’s values of neutrality, non-discrimination, and justice in all board activities.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria

Proven track record of success in EITHER:

-Securing significant funding (high five-figure sums) in the voluntary sector (Track A); OR Leading and managing high-impact social justice or political campaigns (Track B).

-Excellent communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex issues to diverse audiences.

-Commitment to good governance.

-Alignment with Right to Remains’ values.

-Ability to work collaboratively as part of a Board.

Desirable Criteria

-Existing network within philanthropic individuals and/or circles (for Track A) or among media outlets/advocacy coalitions (Track B).

In our 125th anniversary year, we are renewing our mission:  promoting Asian Studies and deeper public understanding of Asia, and we are looking for exceptional people to help us deliver it.

Founded in 1901, the RSAA is an independent, international network for informed debate about Asia, engaging experts, policy makers and the wider public with experience, analysis and scholarship. Our geographical remit runs from the eastern Mediterranean to the Pacific. We publish the quarterly journal Asian Affairs (in print continuously since 1914), the Asian Review of Books and the magazine Caravanserai.  We run a programme of public lectures and events in London and online, are digitising our historic archive, and support younger scholars through our awards and recently created mentoring scheme. The Society is wholly independent: it accepts no state funding and takes no institutional positions on issues of public policy. It is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (no. 1179300).

A new chapter

The board has set an ambitious direction for the Society’s next quarter-century: building the RSAA into a leading force for the study and understanding of Asia in the UK. Plans include a permanently endowed programme of research and travel awards, strengthened publications, and expanded collaboration with leading institutions in Asia and the United States. To underwrite this, the Society is preparing a major philanthropic fundraising programme. Alongside it, the board and executive will together shape a new five-year business plan to take effect from 2028.

Who we are looking for

We wish to strengthen the board with senior figures who share our commitment to Asia and can bring some of the following:

· Fundraising leadership. Substantial experience of philanthropic fundraising: major gifts, trusts and foundations, or corporate giving,  and the appetite to play an active part in a significant campaign alongside the President, Chairman and CEO.

· Networks and standing. Strong personal connections in philanthropic, business, academic, diplomatic or cultural circles in the UK, in Asia or in the United States, and the credibility to open doors at the most senior level.

· Commitment to the field. A demonstrable commitment to Asian Studies, whether from an academic, publishing, cultural, business or public-service background, and enthusiasm for deepening understanding of Asia.

· Strategic planning. Experience of setting strategy and building organisations, to help the executive draft and deliver the Society’s next five-year business plan.

We would also particularly welcome candidates offering skills in charity finance and accountancy, charity law and governance.

What is involved

The board meets quarterly online, with additional work through sub-committees and involvement in fundraising activity and events.  Trustees are appointed for a term of three years, renewable once. The role is unremunerated; reasonable expenses are paid.

Stepping Stones Learning and Leisure is a small, friendly charity based in Southwark, providing inclusive activities for adults with learning disabilities. We believe everyone should have the chance to express themselves, connect with others, and take part in activities that bring joy, confidence, and new skills.

We’re currently looking for an enthusiastic and proactive Active Social Club Volunteer to support our weekly Thursday sessions (10.30-12.30). About DPAN
DPAN is a Community Interest Company working to close the implementation gap — helping disabled people know their rights and belong to their movement, and helping organisations turn inclusion commitments into practice. We're a small, disabled-led organisation in the early stages of building our public voice.

• A commitment of at least 8 hours per week - this can be one full day or carried out over several days - for a minimum four month period.
