Job description

Help shape the future of a charity that stands beside families from diagnosis through every stage of their Duchenne journey. Join Action Duchenne as a Trustee.

Almost two families a week in the UK hear these words: "Your child has Duchenne muscular dystrophy."

There is no cure. But there can be someone on the other end of the phone who understands. That is what Action Duchenne has offered families for nearly 25 years, from the moment of diagnosis, through the hardest days, right through to bereavement support.

As one parent put it: "From the first phone call, I felt completely understood and supported."

Now the charity is strengthening its Trustee Board, and we are proud to be working with them exclusively.

They are looking for people with independent judgement who are not afraid to ask good questions. Finance, fundraising, impact measurement and communications experience is particularly welcome.

You do not need to know anything about Duchenne.
First-time trustees are encouraged, with a full induction and training.

What to expect:

  • Voluntary role, with reasonable travel expenses met
  • Most meetings held remotely, with quarterly away days in London
  • Around 8 hours a month
  • Six-month trial period, then a three-year term

If you want your governance to have real purpose, this is it.

What's in it for you?

  • Help shape the future of a national charity
  • Develop your governance and leadership experience
  • Work alongside a passionate and committed Board
  • Make a meaningful difference to families affected by Duchenne

If you want to use your professional skills to create lasting impact, we'd love to hear from you. These unremunerated roles are open to all.

This role is subject to a DBS check, which will be carried out by the employer.

We welcome and encourage applications from people of all backgrounds. We do not discriminate on the basis of disability, race, colour, ethnicity, gender, religion, sexual orientation, age, veteran status, or other category protected by law.

To apply for these exceptional opportunities, please submit your CV and supporting statement via the Charisma website.

For an informal discussion, please contact Sandra Smith at Charisma Charity Recruitment.

Location: Remote most meetings are held remotely, with quarterly in-person meetings in London.

Closing date for applications: 4th November 2026
First Interview date: w/c 16th November 2026
Second Interview date: w/c 23rd November 2026
