About the role:

As a Shop Volunteer you’ll be joining a friendly, welcoming team of volunteers and staff who support each other and have a lot of fun along the way. We value every volunteer and the unique perspective, skills and energy you bring. 

Whether you’re sorting donations, creating beautiful displays, or chatting to customers, every task you take on helps to build a more inclusive world. 

We value volunteer development, and as part of this role your can develop your skills further by training to become a till user alongside your regular shop volunteer responsibilities, or progressing into a Key volunteer, a role which includes opening, running, and closing the shop in the absence of the manager.

No matter your reason for volunteering – whether it’s to meet new people, build new skills or support Sense’s cause – there’s a place for you in one of our shops. 

Due to the nature of the role, we require all applicants to be aged 16 or over. You must have a UK address to volunteer with Sense.

Key responsibilities: Shop volunteer 

You’ll spend time doing a range of activities, including:

• Welcoming and assisting customers, providing great customer service, helping create a wonderful shopping experience.
• Receiving donated items from the public, thanking them for their support.
• Sorting, steaming and preparing donations for sale.
• Helping to display stock in eye-catching and exciting ways.
• Keeping the shop floor clean, safe and tidy.
• Talking to customers about Sense and the work we do.

Key responsibilities: Till volunteer

Being a till volunteer includes all the same responsibilities as a shop volunteer, however, when you’re ready, we’ll provide you with additional training to:

• Serve customers on the till in a warm and friendly way.
• Put sales through the till, packing them and thanking the customer for shopping with us.
• Talk to customers about Gift Aid and other fundraising initiatives.

Key responsibilities: Key volunteer

This is a flexible role that can fit around work, study, family life or retirement.

Availability: Volunteer around your existing commitments

Purpose of the Role:

 To support the delivery of engaging and inclusive art sessions as part of the Baytree Centre’s GEMS programme for girls aged 5–18. By creating a safe, inspiring, and welcoming environment, you will help participants explore creative activities, develop new artistic skills, and build confidence in their imagination and self-expression. Working alongside staff, you will assist in planning and delivering activities that nurture creativity, personal growth, and enjoyment of the arts.

You will escort the girls to an off-site football pitch where a professional coach will lead the session. 

Main Responsibilities:

- Escort the participants from Baytree to the offsite location.

- Support the football coach in delivering engaging, age-appropriate activities that promote learning and personal development.

- Help maintain a supportive atmosphere where girls feel comfortable building confidence and working as a team.

- Assist with administrative tasks such as attendance tracking.

- Adhere to Baytree Centre policies and safeguarding procedures.

The role is designed to support young people in building confidence, reaching academic milestones, and developing essential life skills, guided by Baytree’s Character Development Framework.

Main responsibilities:

- Provide individual academic support to girls aged 10–18, focusing on areas where they may be struggling, including Maths, English, and Science.

- Act as a positive role model, inspiring mentees to pursue their educational goals with determination and enthusiasm.

- Assist mentees in setting and achieving academic and personal milestones, celebrating progress and fostering motivation.

- Support mentees’ personal growth through guidance on goal setting, time management, study skills, and confidence-building techniques.

- Maintain regular communication with mentees and programme coordinators to ensure consistency and progress.

The role helps girls to build confidence, develop personal and social skills, and form positive relationships while waiting for a place in formal education. By offering encouragement, guidance, and a welcoming environment, the volunteer will help participants integrate, express themselves, and explore new interests.

Main Responsibilities:

- Assist in planning and delivering enrichment sessions (e.g., cookery, wellbeing/fitness) for girls. - Create engaging activities that encourage creativity, learning, and personal development.

- Foster a supportive and inclusive environment where girls feel comfortable expressing themselves, trying new skills, and building confidence.

- Support positive relationship building and teamwork among participants.

- Assist with administrative tasks such as recording attendance, activity planning, and organising materials for sessions.

Through our activities at local community centres, we help our members have fun, make friends, learn new skills and be themselves. The role involves assisting teachers in creating a positive and supportive learning environment, helping students with subjects such as ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) and Maths, and providing one-to-one support to those needing extra assistance. By offering guidance, encouragement, and structured support, the volunteer will contribute to the girls’ confidence, academic progress, and integration into formal education.

The Career Champions programme pairs young people with mentors working in their field of interest, for example, a girl aspiring to become an architect is matched with a practising architect, to provide insight into career pathways, develop professional skills, and build confidence. By sharing knowledge, experience, and encouragement, mentors support participants in making informed decisions about their future education and career choices.

- Share knowledge, experiences, and practical advice about the mentor’s professional field.

- Introduce mentees to key skills, qualifications, and opportunities relevant to the chosen career.
