Being a director for the Charity of Elizabeth Janes Jones and the David Henry Waring Home is an exciting and challenging role, bringing with it opportunities for applying strategic thinking, planning, creativity, and stewardship which can help guide the Charity to achieve its goals in the management of its properties, a site re-development which is a significant milestone in the Charity’s history.
Our directors are responsible in law for managing the incorporated entity, and as we are a charitable organisation our directors are also trustees at law and have formal responsibilities under the Companies Act 2006.Our directors give their time voluntarily and the positions are unremunerated, but reasonable out of pocket expenses may be allowable.
As a director, you’ll work as part of a board alongside our other directors and will also have opportunities to work with the CEO, staff, and volunteers, adding to the range of knowledge, skills, and experience within the Charity’s team. As well as bringing fresh ideas to current and future property management and development projects, the director role also has responsibilities for the governance of the Charity, regulatory compliance matters and the effective stewardship of our finances and resources.
We are looking to recruit new directors to the board. If you would like to become a director and have an interest in property and housing, then we’d be delighted to hear from you!The positions require the following commitments:
- Dedicating the necessary time to prepare for and attending scheduled meetings and other obligations.
·Understanding and accepting the legal duties, responsibilities, and liabilities of directorship of the Charity.
·Respecting and upholding the Charity’s values, staff policies and processes and to applying the generally accepted principals of directorship, selflessness, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty, and personal leadership.
- Think creatively and identify new directions, whilst preserving the overall purpose of the Charity.
We’re looking for people who are passionate about making a difference to the housing sector we would love to hear from you if you’d like to contribute. Ideally, we are hoping to find volunteers with professional qualifications experience and knowledge in the following areas:
·Practical skills and knowledge of social housing and the housing sector and an understanding of the difficulties face by individuals with disadvantaged backgrounds.
·Practical skills and knowledge of, accounting and budget management, using financial data to run a team, function or organisation and to make financial decisions which optimises budgets and contributes to the smooth running of the operation.
·Charity law and governance, with a practical understanding of a directors, legal duties, responsibilities, and liabilities.
·Familiarity with personal responsibilities and liabilities like that of a director and acting in the best interests of the team and organisation.
·Time management and decision-making skills.
·Management and mitigation of risk, including areas such as finance, media and PR.
·Interacting with others and people skills, and a track record of being able to get along with, boards, employees, service users and the public.
·Working with and interpreting data and management information to develop plans and help make and support the making of informed decisions.
·An understanding of and commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
Time commitment: The full Board meets every 2 months and meetings last for about 2.5 hours. In addition, Board members are expected to be members of at least one sub committees. These meet when needed but typically monthly.

The Sherriff Centre, a community-focused charity now in its 11th year, and are seeking a dedicated and experienced Co-Chair to join our Board of Trustees. This pivotal role will work alongside the Vicar of the Parish of St Mary’s Kilburn and St James West Hampstead, who, because of the legal construction of the Charity and the Parish, will act as the other Co-Chair. This post holder will fulfil the usual role of a Chair of a charity and be there to provide leadership, strategic direction, and governance to help advance the mission and objectives of the Centre.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Leadership and Governance:
· Collaborate with the Vicar Co-Chair and Board members to provide strategic leadership and governance.
· Ensure the Board operates effectively and meets its legal and statutory responsibilities.
· Support the development and deployment of current trustees and staff and lead on the recruitment of new trustees.
2. Project Development and Service Delivery:
· Oversee the planning, implementation, and evaluation of services to ensure they meet the needs of our community.
· Work with the Co-chair and Centre Director to develop new initiatives that align with our mission and strategic goals.
3. Community Engagement:
· Act as an ambassador, advocating for our mission and building relationships with stakeholders, funders, and partners.
· Foster a culture of community involvement, including with the parish, and encourage volunteer engagement.
4. Strategic Thinking:
· Contribute to the strategic planning process, setting appropriate strategic goals and workplans
· Ensure that the Board’s decisions align with our objectives and assist with regular monitoring of our activities in line with its objectives and the Board’s overall strategic goals.
· Monitor trends and developments in community needs and adjust strategies accordingly.
5. Collaboration with Centre Director:
· Work closely with the Centre Director to support operational management and service delivery.
· Assist in developing and implementing policies and procedures that enhance our effectiveness.
Person Specification:
1. Essential Qualifications and Experience:
· Proven experience in a similar role, for example as a CEO or in senior leadership within a small/medium-sized charity.
· Demonstrated experience in project development and service delivery within community settings.
· Strong understanding of community work and the challenges faced by local populations.
· Ability to be in sympathy with a community charity run in a Christian place or worship and relate to the parish community.
2. Skills and Competencies:
· Strategic thinker with ability to develop and implement long-term plans.
· Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and motivate stakeholders.
· Strong leadership skills with a collaborative approach to governance and decision-making.
· Ability to analyse information and make informed decisions.
3. Availability:
· Must have availability during weekdays, committing 8-10 hours per week to fulfil the role effectively.
4. Personal Attributes:
· Passion for community service and commitment to the mission of The Sherriff Centre.
· A proactive and positive attitude, with a willingness to address challenges and promote innovation.
· Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment and build strong relationships.

A bit about this role...
Every penny counts when it comes to improving the lives of the thousands of cats and kittens across the UK that need our help each year. Our Collection Box Volunteers help us raise vital funds by collecting and distributing collection boxes in their local area. Making a difference can mean as little as raising 20p, which is enough to feed one cat in our care for a day, to £150 which is the average cost of a cat in our care.
What can I expect to be doing?
As a flexible role, you have the choice to be involved in the following:
- Researching local shops, pubs and businesses to place Collection Boxes
- Delivering Collection Boxes to locations
- Recording donations and thanking local businesses and supporters
- Collecting and replacing Collection boxes when they're full
- Sharing your passion for cat welfare and promoting the work of Cats Protection
What are the benefits to you and the cats?
You will have the opportunity to develop your knowledge though Cats Protection’s learn online system, providing you with the skills to thrive as a fundraiser. You’ll also have the chance to meet new people and be part of a dedicated team of Volunteers.
Money raised by our volunteers enables us to put cats first. Cats are at the centre of all we do. We care for them, ensure their welfare, and help others to understand and better support them.

How much time is expected of me?
Our Collection Tin Volunteer role is very flexible and can be completed at your own pace, independently with our dedicated support.

We’re looking for someone who can lead a team of volunteers at events in the community to help us raise money and awareness.
The housing emergency hurts everyone. The fight to end it starts here!
The main thing we need you to do is help us fundraise.
You’ll be vital to our fundraising efforts for the Winter Appeal by holding collection buckets in public spaces.
Your support is not only crucial to our fundraising efforts, but it’s also opportunity to have fun, meet new people and experience some wonderful community spirit while contributing towards our mission.
You’ll be supporting our bucket collection by helping us to create an energetic and friendly atmosphere to gather donations. You will:
- Support and coordinate the volunteer team on the day at events.
- Deposit cash into Shelter bank account at the end of the event or pass over to Shelter staff member
To enable you to take part in this opportunity we will:
- Provide you with relevant policies, induction, training and information
- Refund any out-of-pocket expenses in line with Shelter’s volunteer expenses policy
Skills and Experiences Required
- Leadership skills and ability to support others in a group
- Passionate about joining the fight for home
- Feel comfortable handling cash and taking responsibility for depositing into bank

A bit about this role...
Please note - Due to the nature of fundraising roles, our volunteers must be over the age of 18.
As a charity we can help thousands of cats each year thanks to the generous donations from our supporters. Raising funds is a key role in our charity, helping to raise the vital funds needed to help more cats and kittens in need.
As a fundraising volunteer, we will support you every step of the way to ensure your time at Cats Protection is a positive and rewarding one. Whatever time you can give really does make a big difference We have lots of exciting activities to choose from for example attending a fundraising event, fundraising online, promoting fundraising activities on social media, handling administrative tasks, or contributing to the development of new fundraising ideas. Whatever your skill set, this role could be perfect for you!
What can I expect to be doing?
As a flexible role, you have the choice to be involved in the following:

Face-to-face fundraising – organising or helping with our fundraising events, attending supermarket collections or local markets.

Distributing collection tins – popping collection tins into local shops and pubs and collecting them when they’re full.

Bringing new ideas! - We always love to come up with new ideas to raise funds for cats and we’d love to help bring yours to life.

Engaging with your local branches and Fundraising Hub and feeling like an integral part of the team!

You will have the opportunity to develop your knowledge though Cats Protection’s learn online system, providing you with the skills to thrive as a fundraiser. You’ll also have the chance to meet new people and be part of a dedicated team of volunteers.

How much time is expected of me?
Our Fundraising Volunteer roles are very flexible, often certain times of the year are busier than others. You can choose your level of involvement to suit your schedule!
Support, guidance and keeping you safe
At Cats Protection we believe our volunteers should be happy and confident in their roles. We provide support and guidance from our National Cat Centre and through our regional and local volunteer groups and teams. We offer engaging online and face-to-face training, expenses and have policies and processes to help volunteers get the most out of their time with us.

Our Shop Volunteers raise money for the people we support with a Learning Disability. Do you have a few hours a week to spare and share your time with us?
Our retail roles are varied and fun. You could be sorting donations from the public, dressing our window or serving customers on the till. There are many people from different walks of life and it's a great way to get practical experience and to meet new people.
This role will take place on a weekly basis for a few hours We will try our best to be flexible around the best time for you, but also need to consider the store opening times and volunteer rota. It could be a weekday or weekend, morning or afternoon, our stores are usually open 7 days a week. We’d appreciate any time that you can spare.
Whilst in the store, you will help with activities based on the needs of the Store Manager.
Tasks you could get up to whilst volunteering could include:
- Serving customers on the till
- Taking stock donations from the public
- Tagging and steaming stock for the shop floor
- Dressing the window displays
- Asking people to join us as a volunteer
As a Retail Volunteer you will be:
- Friendly and Approachable
- Reliable, Kind and Patient
- A good communicator (including listener)
- Willing to volunteer within guidelines and to take direction where necessary
- Accepting of others who might be different to yourself
As a Mencap volunteer you will:
- Make new friends and raise important funds for people with a learning disability
