VOLUNTARY GRANT FUNDRAISER
Alex TLC is a trusted and experienced organisation offering support and information for all those affected by leukodystrophy. Leukodystrophies are rare genetic disorders that mainly affect the white matter of the central nervous system, (ie the brain or spinal cord). They affect people of all ages and backgrounds, most notably children. Leukodystrophies are usually degenerative, causing symptoms such as impaired mobility, vision, speech and hearing, incontinence, inability to swallow and loss of cognitive skills. In many cases, this sadly means a reduced or limited lifespan.
Established in 2004, we are recognised by the NHS and global stakeholders as the "go to" organisation for those affected by these devastating conditions in the UK.
Like many other small charities, we have grown organically from an informal support group to the recognised voice for leukodystrophy patients and their families. To fulfil our charitable objectives, we need to increase and sustain our grant income levels.

ABOUT THE ROLE
Working with our Trusts and Grants Fundraiser, we are looking for volunteers, preferably with experience of grant fundraising, to:
- research potential grant making trusts for relevance to our specific objectives
- send applications using existing templates
- update our systems with details of applications
This is a wonderful opportunity to develop your existing skills within a unique arena, learn about the difficulties facing those with rare disease, and give vital and tangible support to sufferers of leukodystrophy.
We need your help to give hope and support to people affected by leukodystrophy.
ABOUT YOU
Candidates should be able to demonstrate the following:
- an interest in Alex TLC and the work that we do
- basic understanding of the complexities of leukodystrophy
- excellent written skills
- excellent computer skills, particularly Microsoft Word and Excel
- excellent organisational and administrative skills
- access to a laptop/computer, internet and printing facilities
- a basic understanding of (or keen interest in) grant fundraising
This is a remote role with an ideal commitment of at least two hours per week.
Unfortunately, we're unable to consider applications from non-UK residents.
Alex TLC is committed to promoting diversity.
Our Mission is to support anyone affected by leukodystrophy, support research, raise awareness and improve best practice within healthcare systems.

Every community across the UK deserves equitable access to trees and the benefits they bring; from reducing air and noise pollution, alleviating stress and anxiety, making our neighbourhoods more attractive places to live and work, and boosting local ecosystems. However, while some urban areas enjoy abundant greenery and tree cover, others lack these essential natural assets. Our new Tree Equity Score tool, developed in partnership with American Forests, has been developed to help us understand where disparities in urban tree cover lie.
Now we need your help to collect data from remote urban areas across Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland to complete our map of tree equity across the UK. Between February – May 2024, we need your help to complete over 500 tree canopy cover assessments. Do as many or as few as you like, pick any available location from our list, and complete the assessment at a time that suits you - they only take around 1.5 hours to complete. Send us your findings by the end of this project and we will add them to our database. No specialist technical knowledge is needed and guidance is provided.
This is a 'Drop-in-Days' volunteering opportunity for people that lead busy lives, or that just want to volunteer ad-hoc or for a one-off event or project. Registering to take part in this project will provide you with access to our volunteer news and we will let you know about other volunteering opportunities in your area for up to to 12 months after the initial event. You can opt out anytime.

We are seeking a new Secretary to undertake administrative duties to support the board of trustees of the African Bird Club in fulfilling its responsibility for the good governance of the charity and in delivering its strategy. You will be one of five executive officers and as such, have a key role in helping to progress ABC’s status and mission.
The African Bird Club is dedicated to conserving birds and their habitats across the continent of Africa and related islands and furthering ornithology in this region. We raise funds to make grants to support local conservation projects, produce a peer-reviewed journal and are developing a free birding app. ABC currently has over 1100 members from 70 countries and is governed by a board of twelve trustees.
The Secretary is expected to attend three board meetings a year and the annual general meeting of members of the charity, as well as ad hoc meetings of the executive officers and provide administrative support for the running of the charity, as required, with other trustees and contractors.
You must be eligible to be a trustee of a charity, have sufficient time to devote to the role and be committed to achieving ABC's objectives. You must also have strong communication and interpersonal skills, maintain constructive relationships (with other executive officers, trustees and the charity’s contractors) and deal with routine correspondence. We’re a charity awarding £1,000 grants to people of colour based in the UK who want to bring a new creative project to life. We support creativity in all its forms including: poetry, paintings, fashion, zines, music, food, flowers, photographs, workshops, events or something else completely.
Brief:
We need a volunteer to help neurodivergent applicants or applicants with long term illness write their applications.
An important distinction is to be made here - your role is to help someone write a clear application. You are not here to help them develop their idea or to turn it into something it’s not.
Applicants answer these questions:
-
What is their Grand Plan? (300 words)
-
Why is now the right time to do it? (100 words)
-
What is your budget?
These answers are then marked against a criteria which can be found on our website (which we can share with you).
Process:
We will ask applicants to come to you with bullet points for ideas of what their project is. This is the minimum; some may come with a written application that needs tweaking.
You will then read through what they have and help write clearer sentence structures. While we try not to judge on things like grammar and spelling, this does often help clarify the project’s ambitions.
The aim is to work in a collaborative Google Doc, but if that is not possible, we will explore other options.
Keep sentences simple and to the point. We need to be sold on your vision, but it doesn’t need to be overwritten. Using simple and straightforward language helps give us clarity on your project.
We will allow applicants up to two rounds of feedback - meaning you can work on the application a maximum of three times. We ask applicants to group their feedback.
Applicants
This will be open to applicants who are disabled, including those with dyslexia or dyspraxia. So it’s important to be patient and anticipate that they may not have the clearest written communication.
Skills
- Copywriting/Proofreading
- Desireable: Experiance of working with people who have long term illnesses or are neurodivergent
Please send us a short paragraph about why you're interested in this role.
Grand Plan is a fund run by creatives, for creatives. We award £1,000 grants to artists and creative people of colour.
