About Us
We are the only national non-profit supporting people in the UK impacted by borderline personality disorder (BPD). We provide peer support, signposting, information and advice to individuals living with BPD, their families and carers.
About the Role
Our busy support services team is seeking a reliable and organised volunteer to assist the signposting service. You will respond to queries from health and social care professionals and service users. In addition, you will provide administrative support to the team and processing referrals emailed into the service.
Responsibilities in this role include:
- Providing information and advice to health and social professionals and service users
- Processing new referrals
- Navigating and inputting information into our secure database, handling client data and sensitive information
- Explaining confidentiality to health and social care professionals and service users and seeking consent to store or share information where necessary
- Signposting and referring callers to appropriate alternative services as required
Who are we looking for?
The ideal volunteer will have:
- An understanding of the issues faced by people impacted by BPD, or willing to learn about this
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Good administrative and computer skills including proficient use of Microsoft Office
- A solid understanding of the importance of professional boundaries and confidentiality
- The ability to exercise a non-discriminatory, non-judgemental approach to supporting people
- A flexible approach to your work
- Strong organisational skills and the ability to prioritise
Please note you will need a DBS check (if you do not have one, we can do that for you)and two references for this role.

Do you love to support and empower people? We are looking for compassionate champions to join our volunteer mentoring programme. Help mentees build confidence, get established in community and develop independence. The Build mentoring programme supports survivors of modern slavery. A volunteer mentor is paired with a co mentor meeting fortnightly in the community with a mentee; being a friendly support, setting goals, exploring opportunities and life skills. All volunteer mentors are supported and accountable to the Build Coordinators. This role is voluntary and unpaid (costs incurred for refreshments related to the mentor role will be reimbursed).
The Role
- To create a safe, compassionate, and healthy mentoring relationship
- Provide the mentee with tools and techniques to navigate a pathway to achieve things that are important to them
- Provide practical support to the mentee where appropriate (eg signposting)
- Support a mentee to identify and establish goals and life skills that are important to them
- Liaise with the mentee and fellow mentor to arrange safe and suitable meeting places including date and time
- Debrief with your co-mentor after each meeting and provide a brief written record of the discussion for the Mentoring Coordinator
- Work with your co-mentor to model ‘healthy community’
- Manage the trio’s refreshment expenses for reimbursement
Skills you need

- To help people draw out personal goals and things that are important to them
- Have a passion and desire for wanting to transform and support the lives of people
- Be sensitive to someone who has experienced trauma
- Ability to keep confidence and professional boundaries
- Reliability and good time keeping
- Commitment to safeguarding and a willingness to raise concerns where necessary
- Experience of supporting others navigate and integrate into community
- Access to car/public transport and flexibility around location
What you will get from us
- Online or face to face training prior to working with mentees:
- Volunteer Induction and specialised programme training
- e-learning courses relating to Safeguarding, Data Protection and Equality & Diversity, IT and Data Induction
- Ongoing support sessions from the Build team
- Ongoing training with an emphasis on trauma informed practice Commitment
- 12-month commitment period
- Meet with mentee and co-mentor fortnightly for 1-2 hours
- Commitment to write up debriefs and any relevant actions between meetups
- To able to complete all required training
- To be able to attend a minimum of 4 training sessions per year
All roles within the mentoring programme need:
- Mandatory checks including DBS
- Two satisfactory references
- Completion of induction training
- An informal interview and introductory period
- Have a passion and desire for wanting to help and support people

To be the first point of contact for the Mind in Somerset in North Somerset in the Citizens Advice offices

To provide emotional listening support sessions on a short-term basis

To effectively signpost clients to longer-term support either through Mind in Somerset services or partner providers in the area

To be able to work within your level of capability and training, identifying opportunities to link in with other support available.

To maintain records on our computer system of all appointments attended

Answer the telephone and support general administration including responding to e-mail queries.

To respond to email inquiries that may come through our main website offering virtual navigation to appropriate support.

Providing service users with a signposting and information

Basic administrative support as required e.g. photocopying, scanning, and making phone calls.

Effectively take and distribute messages to relevant project leads

To attend the organisation update meeting

Abide by health and safety guidelines and share responsibility for own safety and that of colleagues

To adhere to all volunteer policies of the organisation.

There may be other duties required of our volunteers from time to time.

To support the Community Day facilitator on a Friday afternoon in a creative session designed to reduce isolation and create opportunities for connectivity and conversation amongst Peers.
To provide services and support to anyone affected by or vulnerable to mental illness, improving their quality of life and wellbeing.

Can you spare 3 hours or more a week to help us provide a confidential helpline for people with mild to moderate mental health problems, drug or alcohol problems? You will be part of a dynamic team of volunteers.
We answer calls predominantly from people in Surrey from 9 am to 7pm Monday to Friday:
- Providing listening and emotional support that is confidential.
- We are non judgemental and signpost to other agencies.
- Refer callers into treatment services.
No qualifications are needed as full training will be provided, but you will need a friendly and calm telephone manner with the ability to communicate effectively. We welcome volunteers from all backgrounds.
Our next training course is taking place online on 20th April and 27th April 2024.
Shift times are 9am to 12 noon, 12 to 3pm, 3 to 6pm and 6 to 7pmfts start at 9am). We require a minimum of one shift per fortnight. The Helpline is operated from your own home, at no cost to you.

Could you help prevent loneliness and isolation for people living with BPD and become a befriender?
- Do you have 1-2 hours a week to give to a service user suffering from BPD and feeling isolated or lonely?
- Can you offer support, through a listening ear and be a positive influence in a service users life to help build self-esteem and confidence?
- Will you enable our service users to benefit from knowing someone is there to listen, be a friend, and check in on their wellbeing?

Key responsibilities
Your role will include, but is not restricted to the following tasks:
- Carry out weekly checks with the service users you are supporting, this may be over the telephone or via Teams.
- Engage the service user and help empower them
- Help service users to rediscover social skills and confidence by building up and maintaining a close relationship
- Keep accurate records of calls and sessions
- Report any concerns to the Volunteer Coordinator
Skills required
No qualifications or volunteering experience is required, but the following skills are essential:
- Be aged over 18
- Must have lived in UK for 2+ years
- A non-judgemental approach
- Good listening and communication skills
- Empathetic and compassionate
- Reliable and trustworthy
- Respect confidentiality
- Be able to work on own initiative
- Ability to build effective working relationships with service users
- A DBS check and 2 references are required for this role
