Came to Believe Recovery UK (CTBR UK) is a not-for-profit organisation helping people break free from addiction through immersive residential retreats and online support. We’re looking for new trustees to join our team and help us build our organisation and reach.

Who We Are

CTBR UK runs non-clinical retreats and meetings for people recovering from all forms of addiction. Our programme is built around the 12 Steps and spiritual principles, delivered in a supportive, welcoming and down-to-earth way, where all are welcome regardless of beliefs or faith.

We’ve supported hundreds of people on their journey toward  freedom — and we’re just getting started.

We’re currently preparing to register as a  charity, with big plans to:

• Grow our support across England and Wales
• Build long-term sustainability through funding and partnerships
• Strengthen our governance and accountability as we scale
• Keep our retreats open, accessible, and inclusive for all

Who We’re Looking For

You don’t need to have been a trustee before – although prior experience is welcome. We're especially interested in people with skills in any of the following areas:

• Business, operations or charity leadership
• Finance or bookkeeping
• Fundraising, bid writing or donor development
• Legal expertise (especially charity or contract law)
• HR or volunteer coordination

If you're organised, thoughtful, and comfortable working as part of a small remote team, you'll fit right in. We're also keen to hear from people who have worked in community support, health and wellbeing, or have experience working with vulnerable adults in third-sector projects.

What You’ll Do as a Trustee

As a trustee, you’ll help guide the direction of CTBR UK as we continue to grow. You’ll:

• Help shape our future plans, activities and strategy
• Offer support and oversight to ensure we stay on track and legally compliant
• Use your skills and voice to improve what we do
• Work alongside our small, motivated, and friendly team

We meet a minimum of quarterly online and keep in touch where appropriate between meetings. There’s no fundraising requirement or large time commitment.

Debt Advice Foundation is a registered national debt advice and education charity, based in Darwen, Lancashire.

The charity aims to tackle the causes and impact of problem debt.  We do this through our DebtAware education programme, which provides children with the knowledge and skills they’ll need to manage their money with confidence in years to come and through our free debt advice telephone helpline, for those that are impacted by debt today.

The role

Our trutees play a vital role in making sure that Debt Advice Foundation achieves its objectives.

They do this by ensuring the charity has a clear strategy that aligns with its aims, effective governance procedures to ensure it meets its legal obligations and by supporting the executive team to effectively execute the charity’s strategic plan.

Duties

• Agree the charity’s vision and objectives.
• Approve organisational strategies and monitor and evaluate progress.
• Oversee financial plans and budgets and monitor and evaluate progress.
• Review and approve annual financial accounts.
• Identify and monitor organisational risks.
• Provide support and challenge to the executive in the exercise of their delegated authority.
• Adequately prepare for and attend board and sub-committee meetings.
• Use independent judgment, acting legally and in good faith to promote and protect Debt Advice Foundation’s interests.

What we are looking for

We are looking for people willing to bring energy, enthusiasm and commitment to the role, and who will broaden the diversity of thinking of our board.

You do not need previous governance experience.

• Willingness and ability to understand and accept their responsibilities and liabilities as trustees and to act in the best interests of the organisation.
• Ability to think creatively and strategically, exercise good, independent judgement and work effectively as a board member.

• A strong personal commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.
• Willingness to network on behalf of Debt Advice Foundation and connect the charity to relevant organisations.

Terms of office

• Trustees are appointed for an unlimited term of office.
• This is a voluntary position, but reasonable expenses are reimbursed.

 Time commitment

 Attending four board meetings annually. Currently meetings are held at the charity’s office in Darwen, Lancashire.

Committee membership

Ad hoc and occasional support through working groups and / or support to the executive team.

Who we’re looking for?

We are particularly keen to hear from individuals with skills and experience in one or more of the following areas:

• Community Projects – to guide our co-created programmes and ensure we remain rooted in women’s lived experiences.
• Social Enterprise Development – to support innovation and long-term financial sustainability through income-generating initiatives.

Previous trustee experience is not required — we welcome applications from people who bring professional expertise, lived experience, and a passion for women’s health and equity.

What’s involved?

• Trustees meet around six times a year (with sub-committee involvement as appropriate) and one Saturday a year for an away day.
• There is the option to attend a weekly staff meeting and/or the bi-annual staff away day
• The role is voluntary but we will cover any out-of-pocket travel expenses
• We provide induction, training, and support to ensure Trustees feel confident in their role.

What will you be doing?
We are at an important stage in our development and we are seeking a new Chair to replace our current Chair who will be standing down as her term finishes. We have ambitious plans for our future and we are looking for a Chair who can help drive our mission forward.

Building on our successes to date, we want a new Chair to lead us through the next exciting phase of our journey. You will have a strong background and track record of providing leadership at board and/or senior executive level and will have a passion for supporting people facing tough life challenges. You should have the judgement and vision to operate effectively at strategic level and you should demonstrate the skills and expertise to help drive our mission forward. We are looking for someone with 3 years+ professional experience in one of the fields of Fundraising strategy, Governance, Operations management or Advice / Advocacy. 

We are looking for someone who has:

• Experience of operating at a senior strategic leadership level within an organisation
• Successful track record of achievement through their career
• Experience of charity governance and working with or as part of a Board of Trustees
• Passion for supporting people facing tough life challenges
• Ideally has served as a Chair or Vice Chair and is familiar with leading a Board

What are we looking for?

You’ll need to:

• Understand the type of work undertaken by a local Citizens Advice and the Citizens Advice network
• Understand and accept the responsibilities and liabilities of a trustee
• Be non-judgmental and respect views, values and cultures that are different to your own
• Have a good basis of leadership skills (and preferably you have served within a Board, ideally as Chair or Vice Chair or led a Committee)
• Have the ability to facilitate and lead meetings
• Have good interpersonal skills
• Have good listening, verbal and written communication skills
• Be able to exercise good independent judgment
• Have good numeracy skills to understand accounts with the support of the treasurer
• Be willing to learn about and follow the Citizens Advice aims, principles and policies, including confidentiality and data protection
• Be willing to undertake mandatory training in your role
• Line manage and support the Chief Executive Officer

Citizens Advice East Berkshire makes transformational differences to people who need support when facing life crises. As Chair you will play a significant part in ensuring we are able to expand and grown our services to make a significant difference to many more individuals and families. 

Following a review of our Board, we are looking for people who are committed to developing our services to the population of Derby City, South Derbyshire, East Staffordshire, Tamworth and surrounding areas. We are specifically looking for people with a finance, HR or legal background. Applications from women and individuals from Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds are encouraged.

That is not the only criteria as the main element we are looking for is a passion to help us improve the lives of the people that we serve.  

Practical Considerations

Evening Board Trustee meetings are held approximately every 12 weeks. We also hold sub-committees every 12 weeks. The total time commitment for a Trustee is at least 1 day per month; induction and training are provided, as is support from an experienced and knowledgeable Trustee and staff team. Trustees are not paid, but expenses are covered. A DBS (criminal records check) will be required.

Citizens Advice Mid Mercia is a charity created to serve our local community of over 600,000 people across Derby City, South Derbyshire, East Staffordshire, Tamworth and surrounding areas.

We provide information, advice, support and training on a wide range of subjects such as debt, consumer services, energy, family, work, housing, health, digital skills and homelessness. Our Governing Body is a Board consisting of Trustees who provide independent judgement and oversight and are responsible for providing the strategic direction of our organisation.

We are a growing organisation that provides a range of services from quick advice, generalist advice, specialist advice, statutory and none statutory health services as well as peer support and training.  We provide services in a variety of outreach locations and are also based in Swadlincote, Derby City, Burton and Tamworth. We provide telephone and face to face advice services for people who want advice on a wide range of issues.
