Job Description 

You will work alongside our CEO and Managing Director throughout 2024/5 to:

• Create our events calendar for 2022 in line with our purpose, including workshops, classes, talks, fairs, festivals and anything else you can think of! 

• Build and manage our events team 

• Take ownership of managing the events

• Build systems and processed to plan, execute and review all events

• Report on plans and past events to the leadership team and trustee board

Note: This role has been designed for a year to support in building and managing our events  but we would love to have you longer if it works for us both.

• Be a rogue thinker, willing to come up with bold and innovative ideas. We love creativity and ridiculousness here. 

• Leadership skills are important as you’ll be building a team to work with, so you need to be able to organise, engage and support a team. 

• Time management and delegation skills are vital to make sure you’re keeping to the agreed hours! 

• Organisation nerds are wanted :D that and any events management and planning experience.

• Above all, to thrive in this role you need to be energetic, enthusiastic and willing to work in a fast paced environment as it’s a hectic but exciting one.

We hope to provide our placement students with an insight into the daily internal workings of the world’s largest humanitarian organisation. The student will have access to relevant in-house training and development opportunities during their placement. There also may be ad hoc opportunities to get involved in other areas of work where appropriate. You will be responsible for achieving specific work objectives, agreed with you, in a set length of time within one of the various departments across the UK. As you are recruited to support or complete particular objectives, you will have a real responsibility and place in the department, bringing some of your skills and experience to the role; you will also have the chance to develop workplace skills.

The British Red Cross is a volunteer-led humanitarian organisation that helps people in crisis, whoever and wherever they are. Placement Volunteers at the British Red Cross are highly valued for the skills and energy they bring. Your role as a placement volunteer will help make a great contribution to the work of the British Red Cross. HOURS: This placement will be over 21 hours per week; Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Tuesday and Thursday will be in the Sheffield office. The role will involve outreach support in Sheffield City Centre on alternate Wednesdays with some remote working. The volunteering hours are negotiable to balance your needs and what can be achieved in the role.

Bursary Scheme The British Red Cross offers a bursary scheme to those placement volunteers from low-income households. Eligibility will be determined through a separate application process open to all short-listed candidates. All British Red Cross volunteers are entitled to out-of-pocket reasonable expenses.

For this scheme we are defining low-income households as:

• Inside London: Living with family or partner £25,000 or under. Living independently £22.500 or under
• Outside London: Living with family or partner £18,500 or under. Living independently £16,500 or under

Young People and this role Our placement volunteer opportunities are open to people at different stages of their career, aged 15 or above. Whether you’re student, a recent graduate or someone with more experience looking for a career change, we would be happy to hear from you.

Anyone can volunteer with the Red Cross from the age of 15. An individual risk assessment, parental consent and safeguarding considerations will be required for those aged 15 – 17. Due to the nature of the activities specific to this placement opportunity you need to be 18 years or older.

The casework placement volunteer will work one-to-one with vulnerable asylum seekers and refugees to help them access suitable services. It will include but not limited to, undertaking sensitive and comprehensive interviews with service users to assess their needs and agreeing a plan of action with the beneficiary.

What you will be doing

• Support the beneficiary to access other services, for example from the NHS, legal representatives, and Social Services
• Maintaining effective client records using our data capture system including communicating effectively with the Home Office case owner
• Working effectively with interpreters
• Offering onward referral to relevant bodies as appropriate
• Providing one to one support to beneficiaries
• Undertaking sensitive and comprehensive interviews with service users to assess their needs
• Identify and respond appropriately to safeguarding and protection issues with vulnerable clients, including children and vulnerable adults.

The skills you need

• A good communicator and empathetic about the situation and needs of refugees
• Able to use emotional support skills in a calm and responsible manner
• Aware of conflict and migration issues and sensitive to cultural issues, including those relating to gender
• Personally resilient as you may need to deal with difficult or challenging situations
• Understanding of face-to-face client work and/or casework, demonstrating excellent communication and proven listening skills
• Able to speak good English; plus knowledge of a foreign language would be useful (particularly one used in the current local refugee population)
• Able to use emotional support skills in a calm and responsible manner
• Able to keep the beneficiary at the heart of what you do, supporting the Red Cross to understand service user needs and the difference our role makes
• Willing to adhere to BRC Casework Good Practice Standards
• Able to work alone with minimum supervision as well as part of a team
• Willing to uphold the Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and adhere to the Society’s Equal Opportunities Policy
• Willing to complete a criminal record check

Marie Curie is piloting a Companions in the Community Service to support those in their last year of life in care/nursing homes.

The Service will complement the support already provided by the Nursing Team, and local community service, providing end of life expertise to patients and their circle of support. Whilst clinical and care professionals provide hugely important services, we want to ensure that those who have a life limiting condition and/or experiencing health decline have all the support they need to help navigate the practical and emotional journey.   

Companions will be trained in a variety of end of life care support needs.  The volunteer role will include regularly attending the care home and pro actively engaging with residents, hosting Life Cafes and having 'whats important to you' conversations.

The role will be based in a nursing home or care home in Surrey and the patient will be offered Companion support.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The role of the Volunteer Barber is an important one to the charity as part of our confidence-building and resettlement efforts.

The role will suit someone who is a trainee or qualified barber or hairdresser, who can commit to 6 hours per month at our Health and Wellbeing days across South West London.

The volunteer will be mindful of how much a new appearance can increase the self-esteem of someone who is experiencing homelessness or is being resettled by SPEAR. They will enjoy developing positive relationships with new people and will be willing to work outside of their own comfort zone providing haircuts at no charge to SPEAR clients.

LOCATION/S: Our Health and Wellbeing days are held across Richmond, Kingston, Wandsworth, Merton and Sutton Boroughs. We hold approximately one Health and Well-being day per month in one of the above locations.

The volunteer must have an enhanced DBS background check (SPEAR will apply for this on your behalf.)

Some light cleaning duties will include:

Protective clothing and full training will be provided.

Housekeeping experience would be desirable but not essential. Must be able to work on your own.

We are seeking some dedicated and compassionate Volunteer Kitchen Porters to join our team at the hospice. As a Volunteer Kitchen Porter, you will play a crucial role in supporting the day-to-day operations of our hospice kitchen, ensuring a clean and organised environment that promotes the well-being of our patients, families, and staff.

Your commitment to maintaining high standards of cleanliness and hygiene will contribute to the overall comfort and satisfaction of those under our care.

Some key duties as a Volunteer Kitchen Porter:

• Washing dishes: ensuring that all items are thoroughly cleaned and sanitised.
• Cleaning and sanitising surfaces: To clean and sanitise countertops, tables, workstations, and preparation areas to maintain a hygienic environment.
• Disposing of kitchen waste, including food scraps and packaging materials, into designated bins.
• Emptying and cleaning waste bins: Regularly emptying and cleaning waste bins throughout the kitchen area, including recycling and food waste, to maintain cleanliness and prevent odours.
• Assisting with food preparation: There may be an involvement in basic food preparation tasks, such as peeling vegetables, chopping ingredients, handling and distributing food. 
• Adhering to health and safety and food hygiene regulations at all times.

Please note applicants must be over the age of 18. 

• Greet patients as they arrive and help them to get settled – make them feel welcome by engaging in conversation
• Help to welcome and integrate new patients by ‘showing them the ropes’
• Refreshment provision to patients throughout the day as required – hot and cold drinks
• Keep the kitchen area clean and tidy throughout the day, including use of the dishwasher (training provided)
• Encourage patient involvement in Therapeutic Activity Groups, social, and recreational activities, and assist the person in participating in these
• Work with patients in a 1 to 1 setting as directed by the Therapy Team

• Share information with ellenor staff relating to patients wellbeing

        reputational and PR opportunities of our suite of retail outlets and optimise the model to 
        support growth.
 
•        We seek professional fundraising expertise for an income stream in excess of several 
        £million.  You will support the broad portfolio to strengthen and sustain the Charity for 
        the future.
 
•        Communications expertise to help us deliver a concise message to all our stakeholders.

Companion volunteers support anyone with a terminal or life limiting illness aged 18 or over and their family. Companion volunteers provide companionship, emotional and practical support and short carer respite.

Marie Curie Helper is a professional service provided by trained volunteers who offer one-to-one companionship and support to people with a terminal illness and their families. 

To enable us to reach more people who would benefit from our support we need help to;

• Raise awareness and knowledge of the Helper service
• Ensure that people who are referred to the Helper service are appropriately assessed
• Increase our number of trained Helper volunteers and ensure they are well supported in their role.
• Demonstrate Marie Curie values; always compassionate, making things happen, leading in our field, people at our heart
• Support volunteers in training, offering 1:1 support and facilitating peer support groups 
• Organise social events and engagement activities for volunteers 
• Provide cover for Helper volunteers, offering companionship and emotional support, practical support and short breaks for carers

With support from their Volunteer Coordinator a Lead Volunteer will play an important part in supporting the Helper service to reach more people within their own local community.

Your role will mainly be based in your local community and may include some of, but is not restricted to, the following typical tasks:

• Assess terminally ill people and/or their carers either in their own home, nursing or residential care to identify their needs and determine if the Marie Curie Helper service would be appropriate for them. 
• Provide cover for Helper volunteers, offering companionship and emotional support, practical support and short breaks for carers.  You may be supporting your client’s family or carers before or during bereavement.  This may involve offering emotional support, signposting to relevant local support services or finding out information as requested
• Driving clients to pre-arranged health or social care (eg to chemotherapy appointments or day therapy at the hospice)
• Follow all mandatory procedures that form part of the Helper service. 
• Provide cover as a lone worker Buddy to support Helper volunteers, as needed
• Keeping up to date with Helper service guidance and best practice 
• Liaising with existing and potential referrers to the Helper service
• Liaising with clients and their families via telephone
• Promoting the Helper volunteer role including (with training/approval) media activity 
• Helping with the recruitment of new volunteers, including interviews and selection 
• Keeping accurate records
• Liaising regularly with the Volunteer Coordinator and other team members
• Reporting concerns and celebrating compliments and successes 
• Assisting with evaluations and development of the Helper service
• Help with other related tasks when necessary
