STAMMA is seeking a Chair of the Finance Committee to join our Trustee Board.
STAMMA is a small, ambitious, award-winning charity working with a brilliant community keen to create space and respect for people who stammer. Founded in 1978, and formerly the British Stammering Association, we’re a registered charity and a membership organisation.
Stammering has historically been used to evoke humour or suggest inadequacy. Little wonder that many who stammer face daily ignorance, discrimination and disrespect. This can affect job prospects, mental health and cause social isolation. It can result in making a GP appointment a nightmare, stop you accessing a service altogether and leave you feeling disbelieved. We’re here to change that.
We want to create a world where there is space for people to stammer. We’re at the start of a new 5-year journey, supported by the National Lottery, to create space for people who stammer. Now couldn’t be a better time to join us.
CHAIR OF THE FINANCE COMMITTEE DUTIES
While Trustees have ultimate responsibility for the organisation, including finance, the Chair of the Finance Sub Committee will support other trustees carry out their financial duties.
The Chair of the Finance Committee will support the board in maintaining an overview of the charity's affairs, ensure its financial viability and that the charity has policies and systems in place to ensure robust financial planning, implementation and reporting.
They postholder will:
- Work with the Finance Manager and CEO to compilate the annual report of accounts for submission to the independent examiner and quarterly management accounts for the Board.
- Advise fellow Trustees on a regular basis of the financial status of the charity and where necessary recommend action
- Maintain budgetary oversight with the CEO.
- Ensure the charity complies with legislative and regulatory requirements with regards to financial matters and acts within the confines of its governing document.
- Maintain sound financial management of the charity’s resources, ensuring expenditure is in line with the agreed budget and investment activities meet accepted standards and policies.
- Chair the Finance Committee in line with the terms of reference and recommend and report findings, developments and recommendations to the Board of Trustees.
- Ensure that the charity has an appropriate reserves and investment policies.
- Act in the best interest of the charity, our beneficiaries and future beneficiaries.
- Formally present the accounts at the annual general meeting, drawing attention to important points in an accessible and easily understandable way.

In addition to these statutory duties, each trustee should use their skills, knowledge and experience to help the board of trustees reach sound decisions. This will involve scrutinising board papers, leading discussions, focusing on key issues, providing advice and guidance on new initiatives, or other issues in which the trustee has expertise.
EXPERIENCE & SKILLS NEEDED
- A qualified accountant is preferred, but not obligatory. Applicants should have experience of financial control and budgeting at a senior level.
- Experience of charity finance, fundraising and pension schemes.
- The skills to analyse proposals and examine their financial consequences.
- Prepared to provide challenge to the Board and CEO on financial projections and position.
- Willingness to be available to the CEO and Finance Manager for advice and enquiries on an ad hoc basis.
- Ideally, experience of Sage accounting.

You will have a crucial role in responding to requests from the phoner team to research and book the cheapest method of travel and accommodation. You will be responsible for managing your own hours but you will be working closely with the other volunteers on shift, as well as an on-call manager.
Supporting someone to arrange an abortion is an act of radical solidarity, and we’re looking for people who can work collaboratively and empathically with clients all over Europe.

Why we want you
We are the RSPCA and it's our vision to live in a world where all animals are respected and treated with compassion. Our volunteers are incredible, they play an essential role in helping us carry out our important animal welfare work every day.
Our fosterers play a vital role by providing a temporary home for animals that are in the care of the RSPCA, either during rehabilitation or whilst they are waiting for a suitable permanent home to be found.
You could be fostering an animal for just a few weeks, or it could be a longer-term placement for several months or more.
What you will be doing
- Providing care and suitable housing in a safe environment for cats while they are in foster care in accordance with Society policies and guidelines
- Feeding, watering, providing enrichment and grooming cats (as appropriate)
- Keeping accurate records of expenditure on fostered animals, via receipts and completed expense forms
- Completing records/daily observations in relation to behaviour and health and liaising with your Foster Coordinator when needed
- For cats ready for rehoming: raising awareness about animals in your care with the hope of rehoming them (including sharing images and videos with your local contact/team)
- For cats' subject to an RSPCA case: using discretion (where needed) if the animal has specific needs or reasons for being in your care
- Offering a separate room to keep the cat/s in and your family/household must be fully supportive (and checked/confirmed that there are no cat allergies within the household)
- Transporting your foster cat for appointments, vet consultations, etc
The skills you need
- Volunteers must be aged 18 or over
- Previous experience of fostering would be beneficial, and experience caring for cats is essential
- If you have existing cats, it is preferred that they be spayed/neutered and vaccinated (unless there are medical reasons why they can't be), but this can be discussed on a case by case basis
- If in rented accommodation, permission from the landlord must be obtained

Jabalie
Jabalie is a UK charity working internationally with survivors and individuals that are at high risk of gender-based violence.
“Gender-based violence” (GBV) is violence or abuse that is directed against a person or community because of their gender identity or expression, or the violence or abuse affects persons of a particular gender disproportionately. Gender-based violence affects people of all genders, including women and girls, men and boys, transgender individuals, and non-binary people. However, women and girls are disproportionately affected.
Some key statistics include: • One in three women and girls globally will experience some form of violence in their lifetime. • One in four men globally have experienced sexual or physical violence by an intimate partner. • One in four LGBTQ+ individuals have experienced violence or abuse by an intimate partner.
Many victims feel unable to leave their relationship and for those that do, many return to their abuser for a variety of reasons - for example, because they are financially dependent on them, or remain emotionally controlled by them. It takes an average of 7 times for a victim to leave an abusive relationship permanently.
Jabalie is a UK charity that aims to educate and empower survivors and individuals at high-risk of gender-based violence to promote their safety, autonomy and economic independence. We are developing an education and empowerment programme to help build survivors' knowledge, skills and confidence so they can build their lives outside the shelter and become financially independent.
The programme will have 5 areas: (1) Understanding GBV; (2) Skills Development; (3) Legal Rights; (4) Women's Health; and (5) Mental Health. We will also have a training of trainers programme, advocacy against GBV, and are building a community of survivors and GBV activists. I've attached our Strategic Plan 2024-27 with further details.
Our pilot programme will be created in the UK and Kenya using a model that can be upscaled internationally.
We provide an education and empowerment programme, training, advocacy and a community platform.
We are partnering with local community organisations to deliver the programme to communities.

Volunteer Role Description (remote, unpaid)
Jabalie is a UK charity that aims to educate and empower survivors and individuals at high-risk of gender-based violence to promote their safety, autonomy and economic independence.
We are seeking a volunteer to help us to research women's rights and gender-based violence issues for our social media content. The volunteer will work with the Marketing team to come up with ideas for social media content relating to Jabalie's mission in raising awareness of gender-based violence. The research will need to be written in a clear and digestible format for social media.
The volunteer must have an interest and general awareness of women's rights and gender-based violence issues.

About the role
As a Regional Fundraising Volunteer, you will support Rethink Mental Illness in generating income, raising awareness, and building community engagement through local fundraising initiatives. The role will involve event planning and support, and public engagement to help achieve regional fundraising goals.
You will play a major part in bringing to life regional fundraising activities in line with our “Rethink in the Community" concept and increase regional awareness to generate much needed additional income and amplify the impact of the work Rethink Mental Illness do.
You will receive training and regular supervision to ensure you feel confident in your role.
Regional locations
Our Fundraising Team works across the following regions: North East & Yorkshire, North West, North East of England, Midlands, London, South East, South West. Whilst this is a home based role, you will occasionally attend events within your region.
What you will be doing as a Regional Fundraising Volunteer:

Support and assist in organising and participating in local fundraising events.

Help with event logistics, set-up, and participant engagement to ensure smooth delivery.

Take part in local initiatives acquiring donors and do it yourself fundraisers.

Increase awareness of the organisation’s work by helping to promote regional fundraising activity.

Represent the organisation at schools, community groups, and public events, delivering presentations to inspire support.

Communicate with supporters via phone, email, and face-to-face interactions.

Attend and contribute to meetings with the fundraising team and supporters to share updates and ideas.

We are working with Canine Partners, a registered charity that transforms the lives of people with physical disabilities by partnering them with assistance dogs. Their amazing dogs bring a greater independence and quality of life to their partners, offering security, companionship, and practical help with everyday household tasks. These life-changing dogs also provide psychological and social benefits including increased independence, confidence, social interaction, and self-esteem.
With the planned departure of the current Chair, the Board of Trustees are now seeking to appoint a new Chair of Trustees. The new Chair will foster an environment of consensus and collaboration, ensure Canine Partners' mission and vision is met and provide inclusive leadership to the Board of Trustees, ensuring that each trustee fulfils their duties and responsibilities for the effective governance of the charity. The Chair will also work in partnership with the Senior Leadership Team, helping them achieve their vision for the organisation, while serving as a line manager to the CEO.
The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate:
- A strong and visible passion and commitment to the Charity, its strategic objectives and cause.
- Strong interpersonal and relationship-building abilities and be comfortable in an ambassadorial role.
- Experience operating at a senior strategic leadership level within an organisation, with a knowledge of charity governance and working with or as part of a Board of Trustees.
- Significant experience in chairing meetings and events.
- Broad knowledge and understanding of the Disability and/or Assistance Dog sectors.
The Chair is expected to attend quarterly Board meetings, the AGM and 1-2 strategy days per annum. The Chair can also participate in sub-committees. The Chair’s time commitment is likely to be around 2 days a month. Trustees are elected to serve terms of three years with an expectation that they will service no more than 2 terms of three years (6 years in total), with the exception, that service as an Officer might over-ride this.
