Are you the new Chair-designate for Reading Community Learning Centre?
Do you have enthusiasm and skills to cooperatively govern and lead our charity that supports women learners?
You could be the Chair-designate of Reading Community Learning Centre, a charity serving the needs of local refugee, asylum-seeking and migrant women. We stand proudly for equality and women’s rights, and are looking for a woman Chair-designate to take on the role of leading our Board, supported by our outgoing Chair for a handover period of up to 12 months.
Although this is a voluntary position, the provisions of Schedule 9, Part 1, of the Equality Act 2010 effectively apply as they would for our employment of women-only staff.
About us:
Set up in 2007, we are a Charitable Company that helps often-marginalised women to achieve their individual potential, through helping them improve their English, build confidence, make friends, volunteer locally, gain qualifications or secure a job.
In the 2022-23 academic year, 420 women from 36 different countries attended classes at the Centre, and 874 women received information, advice and support, through our charitable spending of around £200k.
About the role
We’re looking for a woman to lead our Board, to work with other trustees and our Centre Manager to shape our future supporting and empowering women.
If you can think and lead strategically, and help us plan long-term, you have the primary skills needed to be our Chair-designate and eventual Chair. Support from our employees is always available, as they will be dealing with the day-to-day running of the organisation.
Experience of committee or similar work, an understanding of cooperative leadership and a strong focus to shape the forward-looking Board, are what we are looking for. You don’t necessarily need prior experience of charity trusteeship, as induction will be provided, plus specialist guidance as a new trustee, including access to external training.
This is a high-profile appointment, with strong commitment to the future of Reading Community Learning Centre an essential quality, and having a good understanding of the value for the women we help. Trustees make the top-level decisions for our charity: our Board includes women with understanding, skills and experience of our support, and we require new trustees to have empathy with our cause.
We are a charity, not a business, but we apply business principles to governing our organisation. We encourage women from all backgrounds to apply, particularly Black, Asian and minority ethnic women, and those who have previous experience of engaging and working collaboratively with our beneficiaries.
The Board meets online every six weeks, and we ask you for up to sixteen hours per month; this includes all meetings, correspondence, communication, etc.

About EduSpots
EduSpots is a UK and Ghanaian registered organisation which connects, trains, and equips local volunteers to drive sustainable community-led change through education centres named ‘Spots’. Together, we are creating a movement of community-based educators. Since 2016, through working with over 300 local volunteers, we have supported nearly 50 communities in creating community-led education spaces (libraries) named ‘Spots’, with an aim to move them towards our ‘Dream Spot Model’.
We won the Tes International Award in 2018, the Big Give Supporters’ Choice Award in 2022 and were selected as a finalist for the Their World Innovation Prize in 2023.
Internship opportunity
We are looking for highly independent and self-motivated interns who are keen to gain practical skills and understanding relating to education and international development, and provide wide-ranging support to our team in Ghana and the UK, to enable us to increase our impact in a period of growth.
The internship will be remote for 3 months starting as soon as possible, with the opportunity of extending this period. The time is 8 hours / week but this can be spread out throughout the week. Due to limited organisational time, we need interns to be committed to the work, supoprting as needs emerge, and able to work independently. We will consider interns in any geographical location.
You will gain huge insight into education and international development through learning and being inspired on a daily basis on WhatsApp by our active network of 250 volunteers in rural Ghana who are the main focus of our work and our reason for existence.
Key areas of delivery
We have three areas of internship offer currently:
1. Communciations Intern - working with our Head of Communications on a wide range of communications tasks. You should have strong writing and research skills, alongside beginner design and content creation abilities.
2. Programmes Team Intern - working with our Education & Research Manager to support tasks across the programmes team. This is likely to include design work (using basic Canva), alongside wider proof-reading and research/evaluation work, based on emerging needs.
3. Leadership Team Intern - working with our regional coordinator team and Head of Operations to support the leadership development of our local Catalysts - tasks are likely to involve design work, marking their monthly challenges, and offering administrative and proof reading support where needed.
For all three roles, candidates should be highly felxible and be ready to develop basic Canva design skills if you don't have these skills already. You would join all team meetings and our in-house professional development programme.

About our Conversation Class Teacher volunteer role
IRMO’s ETE Programme aims for its beneficiaries to build skills to start and progress in the UK education and labour market and increase civic, cultural, and social participation in the broader community. The Conversation Class Teacher volunteer will deliver IRMO Conversation Class lessons as suitable, required and in support of our English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) provision for adults. You will work closely with the ETE Education Assistant to support language development among IRMO ESOL Courses learners, following a scheme of work and basic course outline and planning the lessons at beginner and advanced levels (as allocated) according to your teaching approach, methods and techniques.
Main tasks and responsibilities of the role:
● Planning, preparing and delivering high-quality lessons to a range of classes and levels in a community setting.
● Providing a safe and inclusive learning environment for learners, reinforcing and practising English focusing on particular areas of the learner's language.
● Ensuring learners’ participation during classes and monitoring attendance.
● Providing opportunities for social engagement to support learners to become more independent (eg. explaining necessary processes about daily life).
● Promoting and encouraging language improvement (eg. motivating learners to participate in language learning activities such as conversation classes).

The School Library Association is a charity dedicated to supporting all who work within school libraries – primary, secondary and sixth form.
Our mission is to build a community to share best practice and to work towards all schools in the UK having their own (or shared) staffed library to help all children and young people build their literacy skills and fulfil their potential.

About Queen Alexandra College (QAC)
Queen Alexandra College has taken on many forms over the years. It has been based at its Court Oak Road site in Harborne, Birmingham, for the last 121 years.
We were initially established to provide education to young people who were blind or partially sighted. While we still do this, our 380+ students now also include those who are on the autistic spectrum, who have moderate to severe learning difficulties and who have physical disabilities. Each day, our students are supported by a dedicated team of 437 expert staff.
Our College is just one part of the wider Queen Alexandra Charity which also incorporates community services provision, residential accommodation and our wholly-owned subsidiary, QAC Enterprises, which offers a variety of specialist commercial services.
Our organisational structure is quite different to that of many other colleges. As well as being an organisation that provides education and training, we are also a charitable company – the Queen Alexandra Charity is made up of four elements: the College; community services; residential; and enterprises.
The College is the significant service area of the charity, attracting students predominantly from the West Midlands, but with one in eight coming from further afield. This means that we are currently working with over 35 local authorities nationally.
Operating on three west Birmingham sites, our provision has deep roots within the local area. Most teaching takes place at our Harborne Campus on Court Oak Road. Here, we have our fitness centre, sports hall and a range of specialist facilities which is also the location of our residential accommodation, supporting up to 24 students.
Our Umberslade Campus offers horticulture and outdoor learning and at the Pinewood Campus, the focus is on dedicated progression to work. Based in a business hub, it a feel that is distinctly ‘not college’.
We aim to maximise life chances, as well as develop independence and work skills. This is delivered through a range of provision including preparation for life, vocational and supported internship programmes and our LEAP curriculum which includes courses in animal care, design and production, hospitality and catering, multi-trades, retail and business and sport and leisure. Through our vocational curriculum, we provide courses up to Level 3 in a number of areas and our students can also take GCSEs in English and mathematics. We provide work experience, careers support, PSHE and tutorials — all are interwoven across each study programme.
We encourage our students not just to learn but to self-improve with the ultimate aim to ‘Empower Abilities and Inspire Lives’.
It is a testament to what parents and carers know about us, and to how students value us, that we have continued to grow; the demand for our places remains constant. Due to this, governors are in the position of needing to consider a growth strategy beyond our current strategic plan.
However, at a time when strategic growth is at the forefront of our thinking, there are also challenges ahead. On-site, we have a constant need to improve the quality of our provision and our student experience, ensuring we continue to evidence the positive impacts we make. Nationally, there are challenges regarding funding which may have an impact on our ambitions.
Given our aspiration coupled with the challenge, we now seek to appoint a new Chair to lead our Board — someone who can play a crucial role in helping us to navigate such issues.
About the role
Our governors are company directors and charity trustees, and they are responsible for strategic oversight of the charity’s activities.
The governing body has enjoyed stability for many years, drawing on a range of skills and backgrounds. This year, however, will see the retirement of three of our most experienced members including the Chair and the Vice-Chair.
At present, governance is conducted through the Board of Governors and through committees dealing with finance, curriculum, governance, remuneration and audit.
Our new Chair will not only play a vital role in leading our Board, they will also have a role to play on one or more of these other committees where their time and expertise allows.
In addition, our Chair of Governors, the Chief Executive & Principal, Beverley Jessop, and the Director of Governance, Paul Walker, meet regularly as ‘the triumvirate’ to consider business.

The Position
We are looking for a Grants Officer who can coordinate our grants team and support diverse tasks that include research, ideation and writing of proposals. In this role you’ll be a key contributor to the continued existence of Second Tree, a small, grassroots NGO that is dependent on grants to survive.
To do this successfully, you will employ meticulous time-management and organization skills, as juggling multiple tasks with competing deadlines is common in this role. You’ll also be able to work efficiently independently, managing your own time and tasks; and in a team, overseeing project timelines and ensuring deadlines are met.
You’ll have demonstrable writing experience and the ability to communicate professionally in English. You will also have experience researching and/or writing grants, producing content that is compelling and that will help Second Tree secure new funding streams. Finally, you’ll have an adaptable and flexible attitude, knowing that problem-solving and meeting tight deadlines are inevitable aspects of this role.
The role will include:
- Researching and identifying new grant opportunities on a weekly basis;
- Summarizing relevant grant opportunities and suggest how to best respond and comply with them;
- Researching information and data necessary for grants and grant reporting;
- Managing the organization of proposals and other documents created by the grants team;
- Supporting the development of outlines, timelines, staffing and budgets for grants according to funding guidelines;
- Supporting grants team with proposal writing;
- Creating timelines and coordinating team to ensure deadlines are met;
- Maintaining necessary records, files, reports, databases, and resource materials for Grants team;
- Working with the wider Second Tree team to ensure that all project proposals align with organisational, and program strategies;
- Establishing and maintain connections with funding bodies;
- Performing other duties as assigned;
Skills Required:
- Ability to professionally communicate in English (verbally and in writing);
- Ability to compile and maintain a variety of documents needed for the research, monitoring, development and submission of a proposal;
- Ability to read, comprehend, interpret, summarise and follow proposal guidelines;
- Ability to conduct thorough, high-quality, independent research;
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team;
- Ability to manage and prioritize projects effectively to meet team and proposal deadlines;
- Ability to work to tight deadlines with flexibility and problem-solving attitude;
- Ability to hold team members accountable to tight deadlines
Skills Desired:
- Working knowledge of project management techniques such as LFA;
- Ability to facilitate meetings and coordinate the work of teams;
- Knowledge of and experience with grant-giving bodies and other external funding sources (e.g. European Commission);

In addition to coordinating the grant team (not a full time position), your participation could take on many forms, from support in the education programs to the delivery of workshops and expeditions with the Youth Scouts – we look forward to hearing your ideas on how best to apply your skills in this context. By coming here, you would gain first-hand experience of the situation on the ground, working in a grassroots organization with a small but dedicated team. This immersion will give you a solid sense of our work, our mission and our approach – which would facilitate your ability to attract supporters.
We have two volunteer houses that can host up to nine people where long-term volunteers are accommodated. Some volunteers choose to rent their own accommodation. In certain periods of the year, demand is extremely high, and the volunteer houses might be full. If you have the means to pay for your own accommodation, please let us know. We would still be happy to host you if space is available. However, in a situation where the volunteer houses are full, this would allow us to offer a volunteering opportunity to someone that cannot afford to pay rent.

The Student Publication Association (SPA) is recruiting charity trustees to assist its work in advancing the education of student journalists across the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland.
As a small, student-led charity we support more than 200 member publications around the UK and Ireland, offering advice, training, and recognition at both our regional and national awards.
Our trustee board plays a vital role in our governance, ensuring that we remain within the boundaries of charity law, protecting the charity’s long-term stability, and supporting our student executives across the UK.

About The Role
As a small volunteer-run charity, we anticipate the role would take up an average of 1-2 hours a week, although this may increase during busier periods for the SPA, such as around our National Conference.
As a trustee, you will be a collaborative and supportive team player who will:
- Attend monthly oversight meetings with the executive committee and other trustees;
- Attend other meetings and 1-2-1s as needed on an ad hoc basis;
- Offer guidance and support to the executive committee throughout the year to help them achieve their goals, particularly in your area of expertise;
- Ensure that the charity is carrying out its core purpose, that resources are managed responsibly, and that activities comply with our governing documents;
- Support the delivery of our national conference, including attendance at the weekend itself during the Easter university holidays;
- Where possible, attend our induction day, for new executive members each year.
This is a volunteer role, but all reasonable expenses will be covered. The term for these appointments will be three years.
You will be part of a trustee board of ten people; four elected trustees, four appointed trustees, and two ex-officio trustees from our student-led executive committee.

Volunteering alongside the course tutor, support workers and other volunteers, we
would like you to help engage and encourage students in their studies. You will be
based in the classroom but may also have the chance to go on some study visits with
the students. If supporting students in live online courses, you will join the tutor and
students on your home computer using the Zoom video-conference app.
Main tasks
1. Helping students understand, appreciate and enjoy the topic
