Volunteer Roles in Scotland
We are currently at a very exciting stage of the organisation’s development, having recently appointed a new CEO. This is an opportunity to contribute to our new strategy, building on over 20 years’ work towards ending domestic abuse and re-defining our role to maximise our impact for survivors and families.
As society changes, our work has never been more complex nor more essential to transform the response to domestic abuse. We are reaching out to all communities, especially those marginalised with a differential experience of accessing services, support, and treatment. We work with partners to ensure that services are free from all inequality and discrimination.
The Board of Trustees are a vital part of our SafeLives community. The Board is responsible for the charity’s strategy and supporting the growth and viability of the organisation. Through their expertise and knowledge, trustees oversee the delivery of our strategic and operational aims, always with an unwavering focus on our mission and purpose.
We are now looking for three new trustees to join the SafeLives Board. As well as bringing new expertise, we want candidates who bring a range and breadth of experience and who may represent the voices we are missing.
We are looking for people with skills, expertise, and knowledge in the following areas:
- Strategy
- Fundraising and income generation
- People and Culture, with experience of Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion
- Digital transformation and Technology
- Government, Policy, and System Change
If you feel you don’t have enough expertise in the above areas but are driven to support our mission and believe you can make a valuable contribution, we will welcome a conversation with you.
We are a national charity, and much of our work is done remotely so we want to attract candidates from all UK nations.
This is an unremunerated position, but reasonable expenses are eligible for reimbursement.

People & Planet is looking for volunteers to assist with compiling its 2024/25 People & Planet University League; the only higher education ranking that classifies based on ethics and climate justice criteria.
Universities impart skills and knowledge, form life-long beliefs and behaviours, act as centres of communities, employ, house and feed large numbers of people and promote the creation and sharing of knowledge. We believe this makes them uniquely placed to lead on environmental and ethical issues. For this reason the People & Planet University League has been running since 2007 and has been published by high-profile media partners such as The Guardian and the Sunday Times Good University Guide eco-rating.
Volunteers will research publicly available university documents and assess universities against our marking criteria, which cover a wide range of climate and social justice issues including decarbonisation, fossil fuel divestment, ethical banking, workers’ rights and environmental management among others. This work will help to incentivise the university sector towards taking immediate and appropriate action on the climate crisis and upholding the rights and wellbeing of all people internationally.
The role will develop and improve the following areas:
● Qualitative research skills
● Attention to detail
● Use of data collection software
● Time management and keeping to deadlines
● Working independently and remotely
● Communication skills
● Knowledge of environmental management processes and sustainability reporting.
Training is provided for the role. We believe the skills and experience gained could be valuable for a number of career paths, including working in NGOs, corporate sustainability, estates management, higher education policy making, research and campaigning among many others. People & Planet would like to support volunteers in their future careers, so will give all volunteers an official reference letter on successful completion of their placement and will act as a referee for future positions for which you may apply.
From last year’s cohort, 100% said they would recommend this position to someone who wanted to add experience to their CV.
Feedback from some of last year’s volunteers
‘I think as someone looking for relevant experience to bolster a CV, this is a helpful and not-too-time consuming position. It had exactly the kind of flexibility that I required at this point in time.’
‘It's a really great opportunity to hone one's research skills, learn more about what our universities can do to improve their impact on the planet, and make a small but real difference.’
Person Specification -the following are essential:
● Access to a computer or laptop and internet connection.
● Familiarity with desk-based research.
● Ability to work accurately and efficiently to agreed standards.
● Reliability and commitment to completing work to deadlines.
● Able to communicate needs with staff at People & Planet and if needed, ask for appropriate support to complete tasks on time.
● Ability to search policy documents for specific information in English.
● Ability to assess information against standardised frameworks.
● Ability to work remotely and independently
The following are desirable:
● Awareness of current issues in sustainability and ethics.
● Experience of research and data collection.
● An interest in higher education policy.
You will need to commit to
● Three 25 hour weeks of remote work in July and August. Volunteers can manage their own
time flexibly and will receive support from People & Planet, but must meet task deadlines
on a weekly basis and attend two meetings per week in a mid-morning time slot.

ABOUT THE PIONEER CLUB
Founded in 1941 for young evacuees from London during the Second World War, The Pioneer Club is a registered CIC and charity supporting communities in St Albans and beyond. With our partners, we deliver arts programmes, music and skateboarding through events, workshops, training, and classes. Whether it’s live music in our iconic music hall, lessons with our amazing team of pro skateboarders, or on the stage with our performing arts programmes, there’s something for everyone at The Pioneer!
As an historic grassroots music venue, we have witnessed some of the biggest names in music come through our doors, including Motorhead and The Zombies of “She’s Not There”. Enter Shikari are another hugely successful St Albans band who started out at The Pioneer Club, before moving on to achieve global success, including headlining Download Festival and performing at Wembley Arena.
WHY WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT
Taking part in extra cirricular activities is so important for children and young people. Access to skateboarding, dance, music, art and other performing arts leads to benefits such as:
-Improved self-esteem and self-control
- Decreased hyperactivity and inattention
- Reduced antisocial or criminal behaviours
- Improved prosocial behaviours, such as empathy and helping others
Sadly, funding for the youth activity is decreasing year on year. And grassroots music venues are closing at a rate of 2 per week. This affects all young people, but especially those from the least advantaged communities who, as a result, may never pick up a musical instrument or have access to art and culture.
As a charity, we couldn’t exist without the support of our volunteers. As part of the team, you will be helping us to market our events and activities and to develop and support our website, which helps us to raise the funds to keep going, and ensure that every young person has access to the arts, no mater their circumstance.

This is an exciting time for The Wye Catchment Partnership as we seek to appoint an experienced, committed and passionate chairperson to drive forward improvements across key issues on water quality, wildlife and sustainable land use in the River Wye Catchment. We will achieve this by collaborative working framed by a new Catchment Based Approach Plan.
The time commitment is for 1 to 2 days per month
Deadline for applications – noon 17th June 2024
Role Description
1.0 Introduction
The Wye Catchment Partnership (WCP) recognises the importance and value of an independent Chairperson for its quarterly meetings and to attend the WCP Steering Group meetings.
We’re seeking a person who’ll be motivated to maximise the potential of the whole WCP community, to strengthen its voice and activities for the benefit of the river Wye, and the whole catchment.
We believe this role will be ideal for someone who has worked in large or complex professional environments or academia but now wants to provide volunteer work that will benefit the environment and the community.
WCP meets quarterly at venues generally on the Wales England border. The Chair is also invited to attend Steering group meetings held quarterly via Teams between WCP meetings.
This role is unremunerated except for travel expenses.
2.0 Background
The Wye Catchment Partnership is not an executive body or legal entity. It is established to convene collaborative working to deliver a Catchment Based Approach (CaBA) that drives improvements across key issues on water quality, wildlife, and sustainable land use along the length of the River Wye and the breadth of its catchment.
Dealing with these issues in an environment of rapid political, social, technological, ecological and climate change brings added levels of complexity.
The Partnership is currently supported by 70 organisations as well as individuals and has a mailing list of around 170 contacts.
For more background see our website – www.wyecatchmentpartnership.org and how to join/Information sheet and list of partners in the Documentation tab.

4.2 Preparation of the Partnership meeting agenda and planning for the day, ahead of meetings with the Vice Chair and the administrator from the Wye Catchment Partnership as required
4.3 Attend Partnership meetings requiring 1 day of your time 4 x per year.
4.4 Attend the 4 x WCP Steering Group meetings (for continuity with Chair role) – these are held online 3-4 weeks after the Partnership meetings and take 1.5 hours.
In total this role may involve a time commitment of 1-2 days per month, focused on the Partnership meetings.
5.0 Areas of responsibility
- Working in partnership and collaboration with members of the WCP
- Fostering an environment for the WCP to co-operate in a spirit of reciprocal partnership, trust and respect to support the fulfilment of WCP mission and purpose and the delivery of the agreed Catchment Plan.

- Ensuring, with the Steering Group, sound financial oversight including review of the annual budget.
- Safeguarding the reputation and values of WCP in your communications.

7.0 WCP – our commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion
At WCP we believe it is our responsibility to strive for a society where all of us can be ourselves and feel able to reach our full potential, whatever our identity and background.
We’ll ensure that our partnership and all we do is open to everyone and that we actively address any barriers to participation by any group.
Our case for the Wye Catchment depends upon having the broadest and most diverse and inclusive public support possible, because the catchment will benefit from the engagement and attention of people from all backgrounds.
We value everyone who volunteers their support for the WCP.
