SEED Madagascar is offering a remote internship opportunity to support the SCRP programme through focused data cleaning, organisation, and analysis. This role is ideal for a motivated individual with strong technical skills who is keen to contribute directly to improving data quality and strengthening programme evaluation systems.

Working 1–2 days per week, you will assist in preparing, cleaning, validating, and analysing datasets generated through SCRP activities. Your work will directly support monitoring, reporting, and research outputs, helping ensure that programme decisions are informed by accurate and well-structured data.

This unpaid internship is suited to someone with a solid foundation in data analysis, experience working with structured datasets, and proficiency in R programming.

SEED Madagascar is a British Charity working in partnership with communities in the southeast of Madagascar. We integrate high quality community health, livelihoods, education infrastructure and conservation programmes to support sustainable change and add to international best practice through research and publication across all of our programmatic areas.   

Location: Remote – based anywhere in the world

Time zone: East Africa Time

Timeframe: 6 months extendable – flexible 1-2 days a week

Contract: Voluntary, unsalaried

Duties and responsibilities

  1. Receive raw datasets from the SCRP team and associated researchers

  2. Clean, organise, validate, and standardise data to ensure accuracy and consistency

  3. Identify gaps, inconsistencies, and errors within datasets and propose improvements

  4. Develop clear documentation of data cleaning and management processes

  5. Conduct preliminary statistical analysis and exploratory data analysis when required

  6. Prepare cleaned datasets and summary outputs for reporting and internal review

  7. Support integration of analysed data into technical reports and programme documentation

  8. Contribute to strengthening SCRP data management systems and workflows

  9. Liaise with programme staff to clarify data collection methodologies when needed

  10. Undertake additional data-related tasks as directed by the Programme Manager

Qualifications

  • Hold or be studying toward an undergraduate or postgraduate degree in conservation, environmental science, statistics, data science, or a related field

  • Have experience inputting and managing datasets

  • Have experience writing and editing code in R. Familiarity using packages dplyr, lubridate, ggplot2, stringr, readxl, here, tidyr, and vegan, for data manipulation, visualisation, and analysis. 

  • Proven high standard of written and verbal communication and editing skills 

  • Demonstrate an understanding of and commitment to SEED’s ethos and approach and be a good ambassador for the organisation at all times

  • Be punctual and be able to work to tight deadlines in an organised manner and to a high standard

  • Ability to work well under pressure to targets and deadlines 

  • Proactive, creative and resourceful 

  • Experience with collaborative work and ability to work both independently and as part of a team

  • Excellent listening and verbal communication skills and a flexible and patient attitude 

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office or equivalent software, particularly Word, Excel and PowerPoint

  • Proficiency in data analysis and statistical modelling

  • Be able to financially support themselves for the duration of their internship as there is no stipend available
