Job description

HEAD OF VOLUNTEERING (VOLUNTEER)

Lead London’s Kindest Volunteer Movement & Guide SUNSHINE to the IiV Gold Award

WE’RE SUNSHINE CHARITY!!!

SUNSHINE is a small but ambitious grassroots charity on a big mission: to reduce loneliness and help people feel truly seen, valued and connected. Powered 100% by passionate volunteers, we design joyful community projects, awareness campaigns, partnerships and support services that bring people together, spread joy and community spirit, nurture connection and boost confidence and wellbeing.

Loneliness in London is at an all‑time high, and SUNSHINE is on a mission to change that. We have the heart — now we need the Head of Volunteering who will build, support and champion the volunteer community at the centre of everything we do.

This is a defining leadership role. You will shape the culture, systems, and experience of volunteering at SUNSHINE — and lead our journey to achieving the Investing in Volunteers Gold Award, ensuring we meet and exceed national best‑practice standards.

What You’ll Be Doing

1. Volunteer Strategy & Culture

  • Design and lead the strategy for building a high‑performing, compassionate, values‑driven volunteer culture from the ground up.

  • Create a united, close‑knit team where every volunteer feels informed, valued, supported and empowered.

2. Recruitment & Onboarding

  • Lead end‑to‑end recruitment: writing engaging adverts, selecting brilliant volunteers, and ensuring every new joiner feels welcomed and celebrated.

  • Build a warm, structured, movement‑energy induction experience — including induction packs, training, and clear role pathways.

3. Volunteer Support & Engagement

  • Keep volunteers connected through regular updates, check‑ins, community‑building events and rituals that strengthen belonging.

  • Champion wellbeing, inclusion and recognition across the volunteer community.

4. Investing in Volunteers (IiV) Leadership

  • Lead SUNSHINE’s full IiV application and quality‑mark process, working closely with the Founder and CEO, trustees and volunteer team.

  • Build and manage the evidence portfolio, policies, systems and volunteer‑experience improvements required to meet and exceed best‑practice standards.

  • Ensure SUNSHINE is fully aligned with the IiV framework — and guide us confidently toward achieving the IiV Gold Award.

5. Alignment & Direction

  • Act as the “North Star” for volunteering at SUNSHINE — ensuring everyone is moving in the same direction with shared purpose, clarity and joy.

This Role Is for You If…

  • You are a natural “people person” with a strategic mind and experience in HR, volunteering, coaching, community building or people development.

  • You have a gift for making people feel seen, heard and excited.

  • You care deeply about inclusion, wellbeing and building safe, joyful communities.

  • You’re based in or strongly connected to London and want to leave a lasting impact on its social landscape.

  • You love building systems, improving processes and championing best practice.

Practical Details

  • Location: Hybrid/Flexible — remote work with regular meetups in London.

  • Time Commitment: 4–6 hours per week (flexible around your life and commitments).

Why Join Us?

  • Founding Impact: You’re not just filling a role — you’re defining the culture and future of volunteering at SUNSHINE.

  • Leadership Growth: Gain high‑level strategic experience in the third sector, including leading a national quality‑mark process.

  • Movement Energy: Be at the heart of a joyful, hopeful movement tackling one of London’s biggest social challenges.

  • Legacy: Your work will shape how SUNSHINE supports volunteers for years to come.

How to Apply

Please send a CV and a short note on why you’re the right person to lead volunteering at SUNSHINE. We review applications on a rolling basis — reach out today and help us build London’s kindest volunteer community.
