HEALTH & SAFETY LEAD (VOLUNTEER)

Help Keep SUNSHINE Safe, Confident & Ready to Grow — and Protect the People We Serve Across London

About SUNSHINE

SUNSHINE is a small but ambitious grassroots charity on a mission to reduce loneliness and help people feel truly seen, valued and connected. Every week, our volunteers bring warmth, joy and human connection to people who feel isolated, overlooked or alone.

To do this safely and responsibly, we need strong, thoughtful health & safety leadership. As our Health & Safety Lead, you will help ensure that every activity, event, programme and volunteer interaction is grounded in safety, planning and care. You will be the person who helps SUNSHINE grow with confidence — knowing our volunteers and participants are protected.

Your work will help people feel safe enough to join in. Your leadership will protect volunteers delivering support. Your presence will help SUNSHINE expand responsibly across London.

What You’ll Be Doing

1. Leading Health & Safety Across SUNSHINE

  • Oversee all health & safety policies, procedures and risk management.

  • Ensure SUNSHINE meets legal and best‑practice standards for a volunteer‑powered charity.

  • Keep our approach warm, accessible and easy for volunteers to follow.

2. Creating Safe, Supportive Environments

  • Conduct risk assessments for events, meetups, programmes and community activities.

  • Ensure volunteers understand how to keep themselves and participants safe.

  • Help shape safe systems for in‑person, digital and community‑based work.

3. Supporting Volunteers With Confidence & Clarity

  • Provide guidance when volunteers have questions or concerns.

  • Offer calm, practical advice during incidents or unexpected situations.

  • Help volunteers feel confident delivering support safely.

4. Training & Awareness

  • Develop simple, friendly health & safety training for volunteers.

  • Build a culture where safety, wellbeing and care are part of everyday practice.

  • Ensure volunteers understand boundaries, responsibilities and safe working.

5. Strengthening SUNSHINE as We Grow

  • Review and improve health & safety systems as our programmes expand.

  • Ensure our growth across London is supported by strong, scalable safety processes.

  • Help SUNSHINE build a model that protects people now — and in the future.

This Role Is for You If…

  • You care deeply about people’s safety, wellbeing and dignity.

  • You have experience in health & safety, risk management, operations, community work or a related field.

  • You’re calm, organised and confident making decisions.

  • You enjoy creating systems that help others feel safe and supported.

  • You want to help build a new charity from the ground up.

  • You’re based in or connected to London.

  • You want to grow your skills in health & safety leadership.

Practical Details

  • Location: Hybrid/Flexible — remote with occasional London meetups.

  • Time: Approx. 3-5 Hours per month (This is a fully flexible volunteer role with no set hours)

Why This Role Matters

Many people who come to SUNSHINE are vulnerable — facing loneliness, anxiety, low confidence or difficult life experiences. Your leadership will help ensure they are welcomed into safe, well‑planned, supportive environments. Your decisions will protect volunteers and participants alike. Your work will help SUNSHINE grow responsibly, ethically and sustainably.

This is not just health & safety. It’s protection. It’s trust. It’s the foundation that allows connection, joy and healing to happen.
