SAFEGUARDING LEAD (VOLUNTEER)

Help Keep SUNSHINE Safe, Supportive & Trustworthy — and Protect the People We Serve Across London

About SUNSHINE

SUNSHINE is a small but ambitious grassroots charity on a mission to reduce loneliness and help people feel truly seen, valued and connected. Every week, our volunteers bring warmth, joy and human connection to people who feel isolated, overlooked or alone.

To do this safely, we need strong, compassionate safeguarding leadership. As our Safeguarding Lead, you will help ensure that every volunteer, every participant and every interaction is grounded in safety, dignity and care. You will be the person who helps SUNSHINE remain a trusted, protective space for people who may be vulnerable, anxious, isolated or carrying difficult experiences.

Your work will help people feel safe enough to open up, connect and rebuild confidence. Your leadership will protect volunteers and participants alike. Your presence will help SUNSHINE grow with integrity and care.

What You’ll Be Doing

1. Leading Safeguarding Across SUNSHINE

  • Oversee safeguarding policies, procedures and best practice.

  • Ensure SUNSHINE meets legal, ethical and sector‑standard safeguarding requirements.

  • Keep our safeguarding approach warm, trauma‑informed and participant‑centred.

2. Supporting Volunteers With Confidence & Care

  • Provide guidance when volunteers have concerns or need advice.

  • Offer calm, reassuring support during safeguarding situations.

  • Help volunteers feel confident, informed and protected.

3. Managing Safeguarding Concerns

  • Act as the first point of contact for safeguarding issues.

  • Respond appropriately, sensitively and in line with policy.

  • Liaise with external agencies when required.

4. Training & Awareness

  • Help shape simple, accessible safeguarding training for volunteers.

  • Build a culture where safety, dignity and respect are at the heart of everything we do.

  • Ensure volunteers understand boundaries, confidentiality and safe practice.

5. Strengthening SUNSHINE’s Safety as We Grow

  • Review and improve safeguarding systems as our programmes expand.

  • Ensure our digital, in‑person and community activities remain safe.

  • Help SUNSHINE build a model that protects people across London and beyond.

This Role Is for You If…

  • You care deeply about people’s safety, dignity and wellbeing.

  • You have experience in safeguarding, social care, youth work, mental health, education or a related field.

  • You’re calm, thoughtful and able to hold sensitive information with care.

  • You’re confident making decisions and offering guidance.

  • You want to help build a new charity from the ground up.

  • You’re based in or connected to London.

  • You want to grow your skills in safeguarding leadership.

Practical Details

  • Location: Hybrid/Flexible — remote with occasional London meetups.

  • Time: Approx. 3-5 Hours per week (This is a fully flexible volunteer role with no set hours)

Your work will help SUNSHINE grow responsibly, ethically and sustainably.

This is not just safeguarding. It’s trust. It’s protection. It’s the foundation that allows connection, joy and healing to happen.
