PENHA LOOKS FOR NEW TRUSTEES
The Pastoral and Environmental Network in the Horn of Africa (PENHA) is an African-led and inspired charity, established since 1989. Its mission is to reduce poverty among the pastoralists in the Horn of Africa through the empowerment of communities and to foster sustainable and dignified livestock-based and non-livestock-based livelihoods. In the UK, it works with the Horn diaspora community through youth mentoring and leadership programmes.
PENHA’s Aims and Objectives

- A full and equal role for pastoral and agro-pastoralist women in public and economic life
- Peacebuilding and conflict prevention
- Development of links with the diaspora in the UK
PENHA has a team in the London Office and country chapters in the Horn of Africa region – in Ethiopia and Somaliland but works with partners in Sudan, Eritrea and Uganda as well as international partners outside the Horn of Africa.
In the UK PENHA has a Board of Trustees, a number of research associates, volunteers and an international Advisory Group. PENHA Board of Trustees is looking for three trustees to join the London-based Board with experience in one of the following areas:
- A legal background, with financial and risk management experience;
- Knowledge of branding, marketing and fundraising, including the use of social media;

The Board is responsible for submitting the Annual Report and Accounts to the Charity Commission and to Companies House. As a small charity, trustees contribute actively as part of a team in giving firm strategic direction to the organisation, setting overall policy, defining goals, setting targets and evaluating performance against agreed targets. PENHA is currently undergoing a new strategy development process and the candidate will help steer the organisation through the challenges ahead.
In addition, Board members are responsible for:
- Ensuring that the organisation complies with its constitution/memorandum and articles of association, charity law, company law and any other relevant legislation or regulations
- Ensuring that the organisation pursues its objects as defined in its governing document

You will join a high quality board of Trustees and Advisers who bring support and challenge from a range of disciplines. Board meetings take place in London (with virtual attendance an option), typically three times a year. The overall time commitment is likely to be around 6-8 days throughout the year, made up of reading papers, meetings and supporting as needed us via online meetings, calls and emails and occasional training.

Person specification
We are looking for applicants with the following:
- Experience of successful fundraising.
- Up to date knowledge of fundraising practice.

In addition, the following would be desirable:
- Experience inputting into business planning from a fundraising perspective.
- A strong network of contacts in the funding sectors relevant to Lifting Limits.
- Ability to make introductions to funders not accepting unsolicited applications.
Legal and organisational
By applying for the role you will be affirming that you are not disqualified by law from acting as a trustee. Trustees are appointed for a term of four years and are then eligible for re-appointment.

- Advocate for the work of Lifting Limits, including in building relationships, networking and fundraising on our behalf; and
- Share our vision and values.
Our Values
Lifting Limits is:
- Evidence-based: our work is grounded in evidence of what works to bring about desired change.

- Inclusive: gender stereotyping affects everyone, whatever their gender; all aspects of identity intersect to create a person’s lived experience.
- Positive, optimistic and encouraging: even small steps in raising awareness of unconscious bias and gender stereotyping start to bring about positive change.

Amal is the only UK funder taking a multi-arts approach to increasing understanding of Britain’s Muslim communities among others and to fostering a stronger sense of belonging in the UK among its Muslim communities.
We are looking for a Trustee with experience as an artist or in another role within the arts sector to join our growing Board in the leadership of Amal.
Amal is a Muslim-led charity which welcomes people of all faith backgrounds and none in its governance, management and wider work.We work to help change the dominant, negative narrative around Muslims in the UK to one that is confident, diverse and just. We do so by growing opportunities for Muslims to fully realise and express their creative potential and to share and celebrate this creativity with others. Our work enables a multitude of stories to be told and heard and builds towards a community of practice in the arts and cultural sector that fully represents Muslims as audiences, participants, artists, workers and leaders.
Amal means “hope” in Arabic. We offer hope that the UK, despite the divisions of recent times, can build ever more harmonious relations between its communities. In everything we do, we are guided by our values of compassion, conviviality and social justice.
Amal began life in 2017 as a grant-making programme. By 2020, we had supported 51 partners to deliver 63 arts and culture projects across the UK. We then embraced an ambitious new future as an independent charity with staff and trustees who are Muslim in their majority. We launched our cornerstone programme, Amal Connects, in early 2022. This programme is based on the three key principles of place, co-creation and partnership. It has begun in two hub locations, Birmingham and Bradford, and we intend to grow to London and Manchester. These are the four largest centres of Muslim population in the UK.
Our work to date has unearthed a huge appetite among Muslim communities for creative engagement, a multitude of Muslim artists eager to put their ideas into practice and ways of enabling and incentivising them and mainstream arts and culture organisations to work together.
If you care about creating a fairer society, this is a wonderful opportunity to play a pivotal role in building an organisation dedicated to tackling structural inequalities in creative ways.
Role purpose
- Share in the oversight and strategic leadership of Amal’s work
- Share practical insight on creative practice and engagement
- Provide advice and make decisions on project grant applications and commissions as a member of the Projects Committee
- Help develop best practice in Amal’s programme processes
- Contribute to the design and implementation of Amal’s convenings for artists and arts and cultural organisations
- Help grow Amal’s networks among artists, arts and cultural organisations, arts leaders and funders
The skills, experience and attributes we are looking for
- Strong experience of working within the arts sector in any or multiple art forms, experience with creative producing an advantage
- Experience of creating art for multiple platforms, in person or digital in the form of film or audio with experience of accessible arts an advantage
- Lived and work experience within Muslim communities (within Birmingham or Bradford an advantage) and experience in creating and developing stories from within these communities
- Experience of inequalities within the art sector
- Knowledge and experience of co-creating work with communities
- A large network of personal and professional connections within the arts sector that can be approached to benefit Amal’s work and reach
- Ability to work at both a strategic level and advise on delivery of projects
- Fluent communicator with a willingness to represent and advocate for the work that Amal does among its networks, on social media and in public
- Long-term commitment to Amal and the ability and willingness to devote the necessary time to this role
Your commitment to Amal
- Attend four Board and four Projects Committee meetings per year. Meetings are usually held via video conferencing but occasionally may be in person in one of our hub locations. An agenda and set of papers are provided to trustees at least one week prior to meetings. Meetings of the Projects Committee may be replaced by decisions taken by circulation of emails.
- Attend one strategy and development away day with the trustees and Amal team per year (in place of one Board meeting).
- Attend Amal supported events from time to time and actively advocate and promote Amal’s work in public and among networks.
- The Arts Trustee can expect to commit approximately 12 hours per quarter of their time including preparing for and attending Board and Committee meetings and additional tasks suitable to their area of expertise.
Trustees commit to a period of three years on the Amal Board with an option to renew. The location for this position is Flexible with occasional meetings in Birmingham or London.
Amal’s commitment to you
We will look for lived and worked experience within the arts sector over Board experience. Amal provides an induction for joining Trustees on Amal’s strategy, governance and policies. For Trustees who have not been a trustee before, we will also provide an induction on the duties of being a trustee and the regulatory framework. Ovarian Cancer Action are seeking a Treasurer who is driven by a vision of a world without ovarian cancer and a belief that we can create a better future.
Ovarian Cancer Action are committed to making faster progress to ensure ovarian cancer becomes a survivable disease. We intend to fund the next generation of research and to accelerating progress in three main areas: preventing the disease, diagnosing it early, and developing effective, personalised treatments. We believe this approach will help more women survive ovarian cancer than ever before.
One woman dies in the UK from ovarian cancer every two hours. Although five-year survival rates for ovarian cancer are improving, other cancers such as breast cancer, had better survival rates two generations ago than ovarian cancer does today. We’re here to change all that. And we’re following two routes to achieve that change: awareness raising and scientific research.
We are campaigning to improve the understanding of symptoms among the public and medical professionals. Education is vital, as the sooner ovarian cancer is diagnosed the better the chance of survival. This is where we know we can make the quickest impact.
We fund research for the biggest impact. Since 2006, Ovarian Cancer Action has invested more than £12 million in research: more than any other ovarian cancer charity in the UK. We opened the Ovarian Cancer Action Research Centre (OCARC) in 2006, Europe’s first ever centre dedicated to ovarian cancer research; and we continue to run our HHMT International Forum on Ovarian Cancer, which has been bringing together the world’s leading scientists to determine research priorities around the globe since 1987. Over the last sixteen years, our funded research has achieved dramatic results, but there is so much more to be done.
After several years of sustained growth and development, we are embarking on our ambitious five-year organisational strategy to scale our investment in world-class scientific and clinical research to build momentum in more effective treatments and early diagnosis. We will also lead bigger and louder campaigns to increase disease and symptoms awareness, and awareness of hereditary cancer and prevention. We have also launched IMPROVE UK working in partnership with the NHS, a ground-breaking clinical excellence project to tackle health inequalities for women with ovarian cancer which will be the first major project to build an infrastructure and develop a legacy of best practice sharing up and down the country.
Who we are looking for
As we embark on our new strategy and as our current Treasurer, Jenny Knott, comes to the end of her term with us later this year, we are looking to appoint a new Treasurer. Our new Treasurer will be a senior financially qualified professional who is strategic, values-driven and has strong experience of driving and building strategies, understanding what good governance looks like, building relationships and can communicate financial information to others. We are looking for someone who is passionate about our cause and women’s health; our new Treasurer will support and challenge our board and executive team as we continue to grow and develop.
We value inclusivity and actively encourage people from all backgrounds and cultures to apply. We are keen that our board represents the diversity of our society, and we encourage applications from people from diverse backgrounds and experiences including LGBTQIA+, disabled and people from ethnic minority backgrounds. Particular ethnic minority backgrounds have a higher increased risk of ovarian cancer, including the Ashkenazi Jewish population, who are more likely to have a BRCA1/2 gene mutation, and we would welcome applicants from this population.
Our board meets four times a year in central London (usually in Old Street), and our new Treasurer will chair our Audit & Risk Committee which meets up to four times a year. We have a strategy away day up to once a year and we are keen that our Board members have an opportunity to visit and explore the research labs and meet scientists we fund at both Imperial College London and University of Oxford. We expect the time commitment for our new Treasurer to be up to one day per month, spread across a variety of activities, from preparation for board meetings, reading papers, to ad hoc discussion and conversation with our Chief Executive, Head of Finance and Operations, and other board members.
It is an exciting time to join us, as we seek to accelerate our impact in all areas of our charitable activity.
What drives us day-to-day is the potential benefits we can make for patients with ovarian cancer now and in the future.

Job description
Tackle Prostate Cancer is looking for a Treasurer to join our Board of Trustees. We are the only patient-led, UK-wide charity representing people with Prostate Cancer and those who care for them. We support people and those affected by Prostate Cancer through our network of over 95 Prostate Cancer Support Groups.
Tackle Prostate Cancer, registered as The National Federation of Prostate Cancer Support Groups charity (Charity No.: 1163152) became a charity in 2008, however the history of our federation started with our pioneering support groups in the mid-1990s. The activities of the charity are governed by the Board of Trustees all of whom are Directors. The Board meets four times a year and devolves responsibility for overseeing the day-to-day running of the organisation to the Chairman, Secretary, and specific Trustee responsible for overseeing key strategic matters such as finance.
Tackle Prostate Cancer has undergone a period of significant change in recent years, with a successful three-year grant from The Lottery Fund and a revised three-year strategic plan that aims to increase our reach and impact amongst our member groups across the country and our voice across the cancer landscape.
With a long-standing board member reaching the end of their term of office, and with an expansion of projects placing more emphasis on our fundraising strategy, we are now looking to recruit a Treasurer to help guide us through the next chapter.
We are looking for individuals who have a strong interest in Tackle’s work and a passion for supporting men’s health and improving user involvement in cancer care. Candidates should possess a positive, ‘can-do’ outlook as well as a good sense of humour. You will be joining us at a pivotal point in our history, with the potential to make a real difference to people living with and affected by prostate cancer
The Treasurer will
- Oversee Tackle’s financial affairs and ensure they continue to be legal, constitutional, and within accepted accounting practice.
- Ensure proper records are kept and that effective financial procedures are in place relating to the charity's core operations, including budgeting, cashflow management, and payroll.
- Lead on appointing and liaising with auditors/an independent examiner.
- Make recommendations on changes to banking systems, financial procedures, investments and reserves to support the development of Tackle’s work.
- Monitor and report on the financial health of the charity and its projects.
- Oversee the production of necessary financial reports/returns, accounts and audits.
- With the Secretary, co-ordinate the submission to the Charity Commission and HMRC
- Regularly oversee regular reconciliations by the Executive Team.
Qualities
- Knowledge and experience of current finance practice relevant to charity organisations.
- Knowledge of bookkeeping and financial management (as necessary).
- Good financial analysis skills.
- An awareness of finance within the context of theatre productions.
- Ability to communicate clearly. Familiarity with video-conferencing (via Zoom or Teams) would be advantageous but appropriate training could be arranged
- Knowledge of our current accounting system (Xero) would be advantageous but appropriate training could be arranged
The charity has grown considerably in terms of reach, funding and output in recent years. We have robust financial procedures in place, and we are looking for an individual to help us to maintain and advance these as our organisation develops. This is a key role in our organisation and one that is crucial to our development going forwards. As our reach grows, we want to ensure that we remain on track of our finances and a model of best practice within the charity sector.
Application Instructions
Tackle Prostate Cancer aims to be an equal opportunities organisation and we welcome applications from all individuals regardless of gender, age, disability, religion, belief, sexual orientation, marital status, or race. As a user-led organisation, working in areas of low cultural opportunity, we are particularly keen to hear from candidates with no prior trustee experience and from those with experience of living or working in prostate cancer.
Closing date: 30th September 2022
Interviews to be held mid October 2022
Start date: 1st December 2022
