Job description

Baobab is seeking new Trustees to join the Board and contribute their skills and experience in order to help the Centre support the rehabilitation of young asylum seekers and refugees. People with lived experience of seeking asylum are encouraged to apply.

What is the Baobab Centre?

The Baobab Centre for Young Survivors in Exile, which was set up in 2008, is a unique and innovative human rights organization for child, adolescent and young adult asylum seekers and refugees, specialising in services for unaccompanied minors.

Who are Baobab’s clients?

We are a small organization with about 80 young people on the books, living in inner and outer London.  Each young person draws on our offer of support in their unique way.  All our members have experienced organised violence and human rights abuses during their formative years. They come from 29 different countries, including Afghanistan, Vietnam, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Iraqi Kurdistan, and Albania.

What does the Centre provide for its clients?

Baobab is a non-residential therapeutic community that offers all its members individual and group psychotherapy, English classes, various arts-based activities, music workshops and practical support, legal advice, and advocacy in relation to benefits, housing, care, healthcare, and education.

Each person’s engagement with the Centre can be likened to a journey with different stages.

Journey through Baobab Community

It begins with an assessment phase.

Then there is a decision to become a member of the community which could mean involvement in any of the following:

  1. Developing a relationship with the organization at all levels, which may take a several years.
  2. Participation in individual psychotherapy.
  3. Participation in some group activities whether group psychotherapy group or an activity-based group.
  4. Participation in monthly community meetings.
  5. Taking and sharing responsibilities within the Baobab community which assists members in their transition to assimilation in life in the UK.
  6. Actively developing trust, community involvement and different aspects of resilience after experiences of trauma and human rights abuses, which the young people have experienced in the past and may continue to experience in the UK.

Finally, planning to stop attending Baobab and move to alumni status with an open invitation to attend community events.

Who are the trustees and what do they do?

The trustees are volunteers who are responsible for the governance of the Centre.  They are not responsible for the day-to-day management but check that everything Baobab does helps to achieve the purposes for which it was set up.  They meet four times a year and receive reports on Baobab’s work from the director.  In discussion of these reports the trustees determine that the organisation is operating effectively with a clear mission and strategy.  There is a subcommittee that meets regularly to oversee the budget.  Trustees are not personally responsible for the financing of the Centre.

What are we looking for in a trustee?

There are currently eight trustees and ideally, we would like to have twelve.  Trustees come from a variety of backgrounds and bring a range of skills, knowledge, and experience to the role.  These have been acquired through working in similar voluntary organisations, or through specialist training or through their professional life.  We are keen to recruit trustees with experience of one of these areas - fundraising, social work, human resources, treasurer, legal skills, IT and data, and communications and events.  Appropriate professional training and support will be provided for new trustees.  Trustees are a friendly and supportive group who play an important part in helping the Centre to develop its work and oversee its integrity.
