Age UK Ealing (AUKE): Chair of Trustees

AUKE is seeking a new Chair of the Board of Trustees to replace the current Chair whose term of office ends in November 2020.

About Age UK Ealing

The charity is the leading voice for older people in the London Borough of Ealing. Its aim is to ensure dignity and respect for older people, and enable them to maintain and improve their wellbeing and quality of life. AUKE has a long-established track record of providing high quality support and services for older people.

AUKE’s strategic plan for the next 5 years will enable the charity to sustain and extend its range of support and services.  An independent charity (and also a brand partner in the Age UK network), AUKE has been successful in diversifying its sources of income in recent years.  Having successfully collaborated with local partner organisations over many years to deliver support and services, the charity plans to pursue even greater collaboration to enable affordable expansion of its activities.

Role of the Chair

The role of Chair, as the head of the charity, is a stimulating and challenging role that will call on your strategic and diplomatic skills.  It provides an opportunity to work alongside an experienced and diverse team of trustees and senior management in a rapidly changing environment to make a real difference to the lives of older people in the London Borough of Ealing.  We are looking for someone with experience at senior management level.

The Chair provides leadership and direction to the Board of Trustees to enable the board to fulfil its responsibilities for the overall governance and strategic direction of the charity, as well as oversight and scrutiny of the charity’s operations.

The role is not remunerated.  However, reasonable expenses incurred in carrying out the role will be repaid.

Role Summary

Specific activities include giving strategic direction to the board, planning and preparing board meetings and the AGM, chairing board meetings, ensuring adequate support, supervision for, and appraisal of the Chief Executive, acting as a spokesperson for the charity, leading the appointment and induction of new trustees, sitting on committees or recruitment panels as required, and working with the broader Age UK network.

Person specification summary

The chair must have senior management experience, strong leadership skills, commitment to the charity, integrity, strategic vision, powers of persuasion, and good independent judgment.

Understanding of the legal responsibilities of a trustee, the needs of older people in the London Borough of Ealing and experience or understanding of the voluntary sector is also essential.

Time Needed

The board of trustees meets monthly.  It is important that the Chair is visible externally and within the charity, can be the main communicator between staff and the board by visiting the charity’s locations and is available to the chief executive on a regular basis.  Attendance at other meetings and regular contact via email inside and outside the charity is also necessary.

The time commitment for the Chair is typically the equivalent of 2-5 days per month but can occasionally be greater at times of significant or urgent activities for the charity.
