Trustees Volunteer Roles
Do you have professional expertise you could use to help a good cause? Are you passionate about animal welfare? Volunteer to take the Chair at our Branch and help direct all our activities which are aimed at improving animals’ lives.
Overview of the Branch Chair opportunity
This is a fantastic opportunity to improve animal welfare by playing an instrumental part in the production, monitoring and review of our Branches development plan. You will be able to influence how we raise our funds and how these are allocated in our local area.
As a minimum, trustees would normally be expected to attend a monthly committee meeting lasting some 2 to 3 hours. However, the commitment may vary depending on whether the trustee takes on additional duties but we would anticipate around 2 hours a week.
The meetings are currently held virtually and if they were ever in person they would be held in Letchworth.
About the RSPCA
Founded in 1824, we have been saving animals for almost 200 years and are proud to be the oldest welfare charity around. It has always been our vision to live in a world where all animals are respected and treated with compassion, so our volunteers and employees work tirelessly to ensure that all animals can live free from pain and suffering.
Through our numerous campaigns, we seek to raise standards of care and awareness of issues affecting animals today. We rely heavily on our volunteers, who play a significant role in enabling us to carry out this important animal welfare work every day!
The RSPCA Hertfordshire East Branch
The RSPCA Hertfordshire East Branch is one of the branches of RSPCA, but we are also a separately registered charity looking after animals in our local area. Much of the animal welfare work of RSPCA is carried out through local branches, which is run by volunteers who have the support of the National Society of RSPCA.
The main activity of our branch is animal welfare assistance, rehoming, and raising fund through our charity shop.
Primary responsibilities of the Branch Chair
- Take the chair at branch committee meetings and direct the activities.
- Act jointly with all co-trustees and work closely with the branch secretary and treasurer.
- To act as co-signatory, if required, on branch cheques and ensure that proper financial procedures are always followed, in line with charity legislation.
- Ensure that all committee members are familiar with branch rules, national Society policy and their responsibilities as a charity trustee.
- Be instrumental in the production, monitoring and review of a branch development plan.
- Actively coordinate the activities of the branch, including the delegation of tasks.
- Ensure that a branch representative is appointed to the regional board and that the representative gives the committee a full report on the business conducted after each meeting.

- Actively promote and advertise the society in an ongoing programme to recruit new branch trustees and volunteers and welcome new members.
- In conjunction with your fellow trustees, ensure the proper management and control of all activities and decisions relating to any premises held or staff employed by the branch if applicable.

You will need to be able to work with people and have good interpersonal skills. You do not need to be an expert, although commitment, common sense, and the ability to be objective are vital.
What we can offer you as a volunteer Branch Chair
- We will provide you with a comprehensive trustee training course which will provide you will everything you need to carry out the role.
- Ongoing support is also provided by local and national RSPCA staff in addition to any additional training provided by the relevant branch.
- The platform to utilise your skills and experience to oversee the charity and make decisions that have a direct impact on local animal welfare.

We are an international charity whose values are grounded in pragmatism and compassion that strives to support and improve the horse-human partnership in all of its guises. Are you passionate about addressing the societal injustices faced by disabled people? Do you have the skills to lead the Board of a fast-growing, ambitious charity providing support and making a tangible difference in the lives of adults with learning disabilities and autism?
Share Community is seeking a Chair for our Board of Trustees, and up to three further Trustees to fill upcoming vacancies on our Board.
Role: Chair, Share Community
The Chair is a crucial role for Share, working closely with the Chief Executive to provide inspirational leadership, and ensure the charity delivers its mission and vision. Alongside all the other trustees the Chair will provide oversight of the Charity’s governance and strategic direction.
The Chair will be committed to reducing the social injustice faced by disabled people, and model Share’s organisational values: we’re inclusive, supportive and ambitious and work with kindness, integrity and respect.
The principal responsibilities of the Chair include:
- Leading the trustee body in ensuring that it fulfils its responsibilities for the governance of Share Community;
- Working in partnership with the Chief Executive, Executive Team and other trustees to ensure the charity delivers on its strategic and charitable objectives, vision, purpose and values;
- Ensuring that the Board reviews strategic issues, risks and opportunities on a regular basis, and can satisfy itself that systems are in place to take advantage of opportunities and mitigate risks.
Share is seeking a leader with experience at Board level as either a Trustee or Executive Director. Previous experience as a Chair is not a requirement of the role.
Role: Trustee, Share Community
Share’s trustee team has responsibility for overseeing strategy and performance. Share currently has ten trustees, and in light of some current trustees coming to the end of their term, is looking to recruit three more with the enthusiasm, skills and commitment we need to help guide Share through the next phase of its development.
Prospective Trustees must have a commitment to Share’s vision and values, and a passion for making a difference in the lives of disabled people. Share is particularly keen to encourage applications from individuals with specific experience of:
- Fundraising, particularly growing or diversifying income streams;
- Property and estates management;
- Setting up or running a social enterprise.
Share is looking for people with or without Board level experience, and we would welcome applications from adults of all ages.
Representation
Share believes strongly that diversity of thought and experience directly contributes to better organisational outcomes, and that the composition of the Charity’s leadership should be reflective of the diversity of Share’s student body.
Share is therefore particularly keen to encourage applications for the Chair and Trustee roles from groups currently under-represented on the Board, including people who have lived experience of disability or caring for someone with a disability, those from minoritised ethnic backgrounds, and men.
About Share
Share is a charity based in Wandsworth and Lambeth, working with adults with learning disabilities and autism.
The story of Share began in 1972, when a group of disabled people came together as a self-help group to improve employment and training opportunities for disabled people. Over the years, Share has grown and evolved, responding to changing needs and opportunities.
Share appointed a new Chief Executive in 2022, and the Charity is in the second year of a three-year strategy. Delivery of our strategy will help Share achieve its mission of providing a safe, empowering and progressive experience where disabled adults can develop their skills, wellbeing and purpose to enable them to live happier, healthier and more independent lives.
Share principally supports people from south west London, with the majority of students coming from Wandsworth and Lambeth. Share currently operates from four sites and supports more than 160 students each week across our range of programmes which focus on personal development, independent living skills, and employability.
Share’s vision is to live in a world where disabled adults are genuinely valued and included, can make choices and have the freedom to fulfil their ambitions. Share is inclusive, supportive and ambitious and works with kindness, integrity and respect.

Debt Justice is looking for a Treasurer to support our board to meet our financial responsibilities. Debt Justice is a UK based campaigning organisation that challenges poverty and inequality caused by unjust debt. In solidarity with global allies, we actively challenge the way that debt is used to sustain colonialism and exploitation in the global economy. As the Treasurer, you will play a key role in helping us fulfil our mission. You will also benefit from:
· Opportunities to make strategic decisions and develop new skills
· The chance to support an economic justice organisation campaigning in solidarity with people affected by debt in local communities and in the global south.
· Induction and training to help you in your role as Treasurer, including a nominated trustee-buddy to provide peer-support
We are committed to equity, justice, diversity and inclusion across our work and this includes taking measures to support your application and your ability to participate in board meetings, including but not limited to:
· Any travel or childcare costs reimbursed
· The option of joining board meetings remotely

About the Legal Education Foundation (LEF)
A Stronger Sector•Fairer Systems•Smarter Justice
LEF is an independent grant-making foundation, distributing around £6 million a year through our own grants and programmes, and partnering with other funders. We also use our expertise in the arena of social justice law to influence others. The organisation has evolved significantly over the past 12 years since it became an independent charitable foundation, with assets from the sale of the College of Law.
Power, Culture and Inclusion: LEF takes the journey to achieving justice extremely seriously. As a funder we are committed to shifting power in the systems that we are part of. We have a diverse staff team and are committed to increasing diversity and inclusion on our Board. As such we are encouraging candidates with lived experience of social welfare legal issues and where they intersect with structural racism, disability and other forms of discrimination to apply.
About the role: Trustees play an active role in strategic planning, scrutiny, questioning the impact of our work and holding the programmes to account and, where necessary, acting as a critical but supportive friend. They are also responsible for the legal, financial and compliance duties of a Board.
About the new Trustee: LEF is an interesting and rewarding organisation to be part of, and this is a key moment for someone who enjoys finance and strategic thinking to join us. Your financial expertise could come from a wide range of backgrounds and roles: you may be a senior finance person in the not-for-profit sector, or you may have a private or legal sector career in finance and have some understanding of the charity sector. You are also likely to be a qualified accountant but if not, you will need an equivalent amount of knowledge and experience of charity accounting. You’ll also need to bring passion and commitment to our mission, purposes and aims, and willingness to devote the necessary time and effort.
Previous trustee experience is not essential.
We value, welcome and respect all the differences that make us who we are, including: age, cultural background, disability and mental health, ethnicity and race, gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, neurodiversity and socioeconomic background.
How to express your interest
For an informal discussion about the role, please contact Allyson Davies via the info in the Trustee information pack, which also contains more information about the LEF and the requirements of the role, and how to apply. The deadline is 10am on Monday 15 April.
