We are looking for exceptional people from a variety of backgrounds, to join AvMA’s Board of Trustees at an important point in our development, this being the midpoint of implementing our 5-year strategy.
AvMA is the UK charity for patient safety and justice. We provide free advice and support to thousands of people each year who have been affected by avoidable harm in healthcare, and we work to influence improvements in patient safety and to see people treated fairly when things go wrong. We also provide an accreditation scheme for lawyers specialising in clinical negligence work and a competence scheme for more junior lawyers, recognising that this is a highly complex area of law requiring strong specialist knowledge.
We are now seeking to appoint up to three new Trustees and/or Associate Trustees. Each appointment will strengthen the Board by bringing a particular area of specialist expertise alongside the wider skills, judgement and commitment expected of all Trustees.
About the roles:
AvMA is governed by a Board of Trustees who come from a range of backgrounds and bring different experiences. This recruitment is intended to strengthen the Board further by bringing in new specialist expertise alongside strong governance capability.
Important application instruction - Applicants must make clear in their covering letter which of the three specialist skill sets they are applying for and whether they are applying as a Trustee or as an Associate Trustee.
Trustee: a full member of the Board, taking on the legal and governance responsibilities of trusteeship and contributing to collective decision-making.
Associate Trustee: a supported development role for people with relevant expertise and potential who may have less prior Board or Trustee experience. Associate Trustees participate actively in Board life and will work towards a full Trustee role, subject to appraisal and mutual agreement.
The three specialist skill sets we are seeking:
1. Clinical negligence law
We are seeking someone with senior-level expertise in clinical negligence law, ideally with experience on the claimant side.
Ideally claimant-side experience with clinical negligence accreditation.
Understanding of access to justice issues affecting injured patients and families.
Insight into Alternative Dispute Resolution practices including mediation.
Ability to support strategic thinking about AvMA’s public-facing services, policy influence and accreditation work.
Awareness of the importance of managing conflicts of interest carefully.

2. Senior charity fundraising/income generation expertise
We are seeking someone with senior-level charity fundraising or income generation expertise.
Understanding of fundraising strategy and income diversification.
Knowledge of individual giving, trusts and foundations, corporate partnerships, major donor fundraising, legacy fundraising or supporter engagement.
Ability to advise strategically on fundraising opportunities and risks.
Understanding of ethical fundraising and donor stewardship.
Ability to support AvMA in widening its reach, profile and supporter base.

3. IT/digital expertise for a growing charity
We are seeking someone with IT, digital, data or technology expertise relevant to a growing charity.
Senior experience in IT, digital, data, systems or technology strategy.
Understanding of digital transformation in small or medium-sized organisations.
Ability to advise on systems, data quality, knowledge management, cyber security and digital risk.
Appreciation of how technology can improve service delivery, governance and organisational effectiveness.
Understanding of how AI can be exploited whilst maintaining safety, confidentiality and ethical principles.

Trustee role description
Governance and oversight: ensure AvMA operates in accordance with its governing document, policies, charity law and relevant legislation or regulation; oversee implementation of AvMA’s strategy; provide accountability; and ensure resources are managed responsibly.
Strategic leadership: contribute to development and implementation of AvMA’s strategy, including setting objectives and monitoring progress against them.
Financial stewardship: monitor AvMA’s financial health; ensure sound financial controls and systems are in place; review and approve annual budgets, management accounts and annual reports; and ensure funds are used effectively.
Risk management: identify and assess risks facing AvMA and ensure appropriate systems, policies and procedures are in place, including for safeguarding and data protection.
Advocacy and ambassadorship: act as an ambassador for AvMA, promote its values and mission externally and use networks and contacts, where appropriate, to support AvMA’s work.
Board meetings and committees: attend and actively participate in Board meetings, committees and other relevant meetings; read papers in advance and contribute to discussion and decision-making.
Support and supervision: provide support to the leadership team, offer guidance and act as a sounding board when needed. Where appropriate, take on a mentoring role with key staff or volunteers.
Associate Trustee role description
Associate Trustees are not full Trustees when appointed but are expected to participate actively in Board life and develop their understanding of charity governance, AvMA’s work and the responsibilities of trusteeship.
Attend and participate in Board meetings.
Join relevant discussions and contribute their expertise.
Develop their understanding of charity governance and AvMA’s strategic priorities.
Participate in mentoring, induction and development.
Contribute to committees and other work where appropriate.
Work towards readiness for a full Trustee role, subject to appraisal and mutual agreement.

Read Easy provides free, confidential, one to-one reading coaching for adults who struggle with reading, through a network of volunteer groups. Read Easy groups are changing the lives of individual adults across the country by providing them with the support they need to learn to read, and in turn opening doors for them to all sorts of new opportunities in life. Outline of the Coordinator role
The Coordinator is the first point of contact for those who want to learn to read. Using a simple assessment, the Coordinator will explain to a potential new ‘Reader’ how Read Easy may be able to help them. The Coordinator pairs up new Coaches with those who want to learn to read and provides ongoing support to these reading pairs. They visit reading sessions occasionally and maintain support through regular calls with both Reader and Coach to check all is going well, calling on the group’s Literacy Specialist to respond to any literacy related difficulties a pair may be having. Being a Read Easy Coordinator is very flexible. You decide how much time you have to offer, and this will determine the number of reading pairs you look after. The role provides lots of variety, is home-based and can work well around other commitments.
How we will support you
You will be provided with the Coordinator Handbook, training, induction, policies, resources and guidance specifically needed for this role, including access to support from a Read Easy UK Regional Adviser. In addition, the Coordinator Supporter will meet with you regularly to provide support and find out how your Reading Pairs are getting on. You will be invited to Read Easy UK’s volunteer forums and National Conference which gives volunteers an opportunity for networking with those from other groups.
What you will be doing:
● Help interview new Coaches when recruited and shortlisted by the Volunteer Recruiter.
● Enrol and assess new Readers, using the simple resources provided.
● Match Readers with Coaches, make introductions, and help them organise their reading sessions (which will take place in an approved venue or online).
● Visit your reading pairs to provide encouragement, presenting certificates on occasion.
● Work collaboratively with any other Coordinators in the group.
● Contribute to Coach meetings where volunteers discuss their experiences and receive further support. (Run by the Management Team typically every 8 weeks.)
● Attend Management Team meetings when invited, typically every 6-8 weeks either in person or remotely.
● Record progress of your reading pairs using resources provided, sharing these with the Management Team to keep them fully informed and submit expenses for payment egularly.
The skills you will need:
● A passion for supporting others achieve either their reading or coaching goals;
● A willingness to become familiar with the methods of the phonics based Turning Pages coaching manuals, so that you can confidently guide others;
● Good communication and people skills, with a commitment to maintaining confidentiality. Strong organisational, time management and record keeping skills;
● Self-awareness, personal responsibility and a professional approach;
● Reasonable confidence in using IT(accessing documents, completing electronic forms and records, email, Teams/Zoom meetings);
● The ability to use initiative and willingness to work independently and as part of a team;
● A willingness to abide by Read Easy policies and procedures;
● An open attitude that encourages two-way communication and willingness to ask for support from the Management Team;
● A non-judgemental attitude and respect for others, with a commitment to equality and diversity, so that you can make everyone feel valued and included;
● Energy and enthusiasm with an average of 2-3 hours a week to commit to the role.

Referral partnerships (the main task). Each week, email a small batch of relevant organisations (charities, social prescribers, advice services, housing providers, universities) to introduce Flourish as a referral option, using our ready-made templates and contact list. Follow up once and track responses. This is friendly relationship-building, not hard selling.
Directory listings. Create and keep Flourish's profiles up to date on counselling and wellbeing directories, using our master profile copy so everything stays consistent.
Reviews. Run our gentle, ethical review-request process and keep a simple record.
Drafting for the founder to approve. Draft short responses to journalist requests and occasional LinkedIn posts in the founder's voice, ready for her quick sign-off. We provide an expert toolkit, including bios and key messages, to make this easy.
Light reporting. Keep a simple tracker of activity and enquiries so we can see what is working.
You will not be asked to provide counselling, give clinical advice, or speak publicly as an expert yourself; the founder remains the named voice.
Who we are looking for.
Organised and reliable, comfortable working through a list methodically.
Confident, warm written English; able to write a friendly, professional email.
Comfortable with spreadsheets, web forms and email; quick to learn simple online tools.
Self-motivated and able to work independently and remotely.
In sympathy with our mission of accessible mental health support.
No counselling or marketing qualification is needed. Experience in admin, communications, community work, fundraising or customer service is welcome but not essential.

We are a local RSPCA branch and we raise our own funds. The money we bring in through donations, grants, gifts in wills and local support makes a real difference to what we can do for animals in our area.
We are looking for a Fundraising Volunteer to help us find new ways to raise money and build support for our work.
This could be a lovely role for someone who has some fundraising experience and would like to use their skills for a cause they care about. You do not need to be an animal welfare expert. What matters most is that you care about animals, enjoy bringing ideas together, and can help us explain clearly why our work needs support.
You don't need to be an expert in everything listed below, but some experience in one or more of these areas would be helpful.
What you will be doing
As a Fundraising Volunteer, you may help with:
Researching suitable grant-making trusts, foundations and local funding opportunities
Helping to prepare information for grant applications and funding bids
Supporting donation appeals for specific projects, such as veterinary care, animal accommodation, equipment or rehoming work

This is a flexible role and much of it can be done from home.
