RSPCA Alton, Haslemere & Petersfield Branch

We are looking for volunteers to join our Trustee board with expertise in any of these areas:

• Charity finance/ Treasurer
• Marketing/ Social Media
• Fundraising/Retail
• Project management

You will gain new skills and experience as a Branch Trustee whilst enabling us to help animals in our area.

Overview

We are looking for enthusiastic people to take the role as a Charity Trustee, who could devote some time to volunteer for the Alton, Haslemere & Petersfield Branch and support us in boosting our local animal welfare work. Alongside using your expertise, this role will enable you to enhance how we care for and prevent cruelty to animals and drive the implementation of key initiatives. You will serve on the governing body of the charity and be instrumental, alongside fellow Trustees, in the running of the Branch and the implementation of a development plan. At a minimum, you would normally be expected to attend a monthly online committee meeting and to spend further time driving forward our activities.

The Alton, Haslemere & Petersfield RSPCA Branch

We are the local branch of the national RSPCA, but we are also a separately registered charity looking after animals in our local area.

The Branch is in an enviable financial position and employs an experienced member of staff as Branch Manager. Once additional Trustees are in place, we expect to move towards CIO (Charitable Incorporated Organisation) status.

Our main current activities are:

• Providing financial assistance to local people unable to afford unexpected vets’ bills. In the past year, we have allocated £40,000 to this area.
• Collecting petfood donations, which we collate and then pass to our local foodbanks.
• Re-homing cats in the Alton part of our area, organised in co-operation with the neighbouring RSPCA Branch.
• Some fundraising activities, including organising fun Dog Shows.
• We are looking to recruit at least three new trustees to work on significantly developing the Branch over the next few years. Initiatives we are considering are:
• Establishing a comprehensive fostering and re-homing network, across the entire Branch area.
• Major income generation initiatives, including opening our own shops.
• Developing our own animal centre resources, possibly in co-operation with private sector providers in the Branch area.

Core Branch Trustee responsibilities

• Appreciate and support the aims and policies of the RSPCA.
• Work in conjunction with fellow Trustees and Branch Officers and jointly act in making decisions for the best interests of the Branch and the RSPCA.
• Assist the Branch, as appropriate, to work with and assist national RSPCA staff, including but not limited to Inspectors.
• Actively participate in Branch committee meetings and to attend the Branch Annual General Meeting (AGM).
• Actively promote and advertise the society in an ongoing programme to recruit new Trustees and volunteers and welcome new members.
• In conjunction with fellow Trustees, ensure the proper management and control of all activities and decisions.

What we are looking for in a volunteer

We are committed to creating a Board which is representative of our society and encourages people from any background to apply. You will need to be able to work with people and have good interpersonal skills.

Practical considerations

• To become a Trustee, you will need to be aged 18 or over and have become a member of our Branch.
• Trustees are elected annually.
• You must not be disqualified from being a Trustee. Please read the Charity Commission’s guidance on who can be a Trustee of a charity.
• You will need to sign a Trustee Declaration of Willingness to Act, clarifying that you are not disqualified from being a Trustee.
• References will be required.

As well as fulfilling the duties of a Trustee, the Treasurer maintains an overview of Easing Anxieties’ financial affairs. The Treasurer ensures that effective and appropriate financial measures, controls and procedures are put in place and reports to the Board at regular intervals about the financial health of the organisation.

Treasurer role

• Overseeing the presentation of budgets, internal management accounts and annual financial statements to the Board of Trustees. 

• Ensuring that proper accounting records are kept, and that appropriate accounting procedures and controls are in place. 

• Ensuring that robust and comprehensive financial policies are in place and being implemented, and supporting the development of policies covering financial reserves, and cost management. 

• Monitoring and advising on the financial viability of the charity. 

• Overseeing financial controls and adherence to systems, regularly liaising with Chief Executive. 

• Advising on the financial implications of the charity’s strategic plan, including overseeing the charity’s financial risk-management process 

• Ensuring investments and assets are maximised.

• Lead on the appointment of and liaison with external auditors. 

• Oversee the development and implementation of systems for appraising, mitigating and reporting corporate risk. 

• Ensuring that the accounts are prepared and disclosed in the form required by relevant statutory bodies, for example, the Charity Commission and/or the Registrar of Companies.

• Keeping the board informed about its financial duties and responsibilities and liaising with the Chief Executive to develop the financial understanding of the Board of Trustees.

What we are looking for

• A finance professional. A knowledge of charity finance is an advantage. Otherwise an enthusiasm to learn, drawing from sound commercial experience and an understanding of SMEs.

• A strategic thinker with an ability to balance risk and opportunity.

• Clear communicator with the ability to bring the financial information alive to non-finance specialists. 

• Willing to play an active role in areas such as forecasting, setting budgets, liaising with auditors

In addition to the above, the Treasurer will also have the responsibilities and qualities of all trustees:

• Support and provide advice on Easing Anxieities’ purpose, vision, goals and activities. 

• Approve operational strategies and policies, and monitor and evaluate their implementation.

• Oversee Easing Anxieties’ financial plans and budgets and monitor and evaluate progress. 

• Ensure the effective and efficient administration of the organisation.

• Ensure that key risks are being identified, monitored and controlled effectively.

• Review and approve Easing Anxieties’ financial statements.

• Provide support and challenge to Easing Anxieties’ CEO in the exercise of their delegated authority and affairs.

• Keep abreast of changes in Easing Anxieties’ operating environment.

•  Contribute to regular reviews of Easing Anxieties’ own governance.

• Attend Board meetings, adequately prepared to contribute to  discussions.

• Use independent judgment, acting legally and in good faith to promote and protect Easing Anxieties’ interests, to the exclusion of their own personal and/or any third party  interests.

• Contribute to the broader promotion of Easing Anxieties’ objects, aims and reputation by applying your skills, expertise, knowledge and contacts.

As a small charity, there will be times when the trustees will need to be actively involved beyond Board meetings. This may involve scrutinising board papers, leading discussions,  focusing on key issues, providing advice and guidance on new initiatives, presenting externally, or other issues in which the trustee has special expertise.

Terms of appointment

Terms of office

• Trustees are appointed for a 2 year term of office, renewal for 4 further terms to a maximum of 10 years.

• This is a voluntary position, but reasonable expenses will be reimbursed.

Time Commitment (Estimated at 7hours per week)

• Attending 4 Board meetings annually. Currently meetings are held remotely.

• Monthly scheduled meeting with the CEO with flexibility to respond swiftly to the occasional ad hoc issue.

As Vice-Chair of Trustees you will provide strategic direction for the charity, ensuring that we are meeting the demand for our services, and making certain that we help and support people in crisis in the local community.

Key tasks

Vice-Chairperson Responsibilities:

• work alongside the Chairperson to ensure the board functions effectively and carries out its duties
• ensure the board sets an overall direction for the food bank with clear objectives
• ensure that the business of meetings is dealt with, and decisions are recorded and implemented
• in consultation with the rest of the board, recruit board members with relevant expertise and experience when required
• as a deputy for the Chairperson, taking on the Chair’s role in their absence.
• to learn from the Chair of Trustees, with a view to ascending to the role of Chairperson at the conclusion of their term in office.

Ensure an effective relationship between staff, volunteers, and stakeholders:

• to plan, with the Chairperson and food bank manager, an annual schedule of any subcommittee/steering group meetings and other key events which board members should attend
• to work alongside the Food Bank Manager to ensure there is appropriate communication between the trustee board and staff, volunteers, and any other stakeholders.
• Other responsibilities, along with the board of trustees, include:
• to approve, support and guide the charity’s purpose, vision, strategy, goals and objectives
• to manage the charity’s resources responsibly, ensuring the charity’s assets are used only to carry out its purpose, ensure the charity does not become over-committed, and ensure that key risks are identified, monitored and controlled appropriately
• to ensure the effective and efficient administration of the charity, responding to changes in the local community as appropriate
• to ensure appropriate financial plans are in place, budgets are monitored, financial statements are reviewed, and progress is evaluated
• to help promote the organisation to key stakeholders and beneficiaries
• to ensure the charity has appropriate procedures to comply with current legislation and good practice, including employment, health and safety, equity, diversity and inclusion, safeguarding, and GDPR compliance/data protection
• to prepare for and regularly attend and participate in board and subcommittee meetings and any trustee away days.

We need people who have a passion for helping others, care about their communities and want to make a difference, supporting them to become safe and more resilient by sharing your first aid skills and knowledge. As a Community First Aider, you’ll deliver first aid to those in need through local events, as well as provide education to the public so that the ripple effect of First Aid grows.

Relevant Person’s Representative (RPR) Support Volunteer

People in care homes should have a voice to communicate their needs wishes and wants. Some people need support with this, but don’t have friends and family available to assist them.  This means they’re entitled to have support from an RPR and volunteer, who are there to make sure they get the care they deserve.  Your role as an RPR Support Volunteer is to collaborate with the VoiceAbility RPR to make sure a person’s views are listened to when decisions are made about their care. 

• As an RPR Support Volunteer you might: 
• Visit people in their care home, to make sure they’re getting the right care and support 
• Talk with them about their feelings, thoughts and wishes 
• Raise concerns 
• Keep detailed notes and records 
• Make a real difference to someone’s life 

All volunteering will take place Monday to Friday between 09:00 and 17:00.  You will need to be over 18 years old and be living in the UK. Please note that there is no opportunity to volunteer at weekends or in the evening.

As an Independent Governor, you will be at the very heart of the College Group, not only responsible for determining the education and training provided and the strategy for delivering it, but also leading the drive to maintain excellent teaching and learning, improving outcomes for young people and adult learners in Hastings, Eastbourne, Lewes and Newhaven.

We are looking to engage Governors with a passion and interest in supporting the lives of young people and adults through education.

You do not need to be an expert in education, but what you do need is the drive and ambition to support others to succeed, to be an ambassador for the college and all that we do for our local communities, students, stakeholders, and our people.

Having recently carried out a skills audit of our current Governors, there are some particular areas of expertise that we are keen to engage with the Board. These are:

• Financial management expertise, with either a specialism in FE and/or a qualified accountant.
• Audit knowledge and experience.
• Digital/AI expertise.
• Expertise in complex capital and infrastructure projects.
• Experience in marketing and strategic communications.
• Organisational culture and managing change.
• FE curriculum and quality expertise.

However, this is not an exhaustive list. We are also interested in candidates with knowledge of the Lewes/Newhaven local areas, ideally with an existing network within local industries and/or relationships with key community stakeholders.

Trustees play a vital role in ensuring Middlewich and District Foodbank meets its core purpose by overseeing the management and administration of the charity and ensuring that the foodbank has a clear strategy in line with our vision and goals.

What will you be doing?

As a trustee you will share collective responsibility for the governance of the food bank and all decisions made by the board, ensuring the organisation is well run, fulfils its mission, is compliant with charity law and that the charity is open and accountable. It is also the responsibility of the treasurer to work in partnership with the chairperson and other trustees to ensure the financial viability and development of the organisation.

Key tasks

Trustee (Fundraising & Grants Lead) responsibilities:

• to work alongside the Finance Committee, treasurer and the rest of the board to plan what level of funds are required to be generated to ensure the effective running of the charity
• to work alongside the trustee board to ensure that all grants are sought and written with the purpose of meeting the charity’s vision and objectives
• to lead on the organisation of fundraising opportunities to support the running of the charity, with a specific focus on engaging with business and corporate partners
• to lead on incorporating national Trussell fundraising campaigns/events into the food bank’s fundraising calendar
• to oversee, with operational management support, the writing of high-quality grant applications that are in line with the charity’s vision and objectives
• to regularly communicate to the rest of the trustee board via trustee meetings or any other communication, any relevant information and/or developments regarding fund raising or grant applications.

Other responsibilities, along with the board of trustees, include:

• to approve, support and guide the charity’s purpose, vision, strategy, goals and objectives.
• to manage the charity’s resources responsibly, including ensuring the charity’s assets are used only to carry out its purpose, avoid undue risk, and not over-commit the charity.
• to ensure that key risks are identified, monitored, and controlled appropriately.
• to ensure appropriate financial plans are in place, budgets are monitored, and progress is evaluated.
• to review and approve financial statements.
• to ensure the charity has appropriate procedures to comply with current legislation and good practice, including employment, health and safety, equity, diversity and inclusion, safeguarding and GDPR compliance/data protection.
• to prepare for and regularly attend and participate in board and subcommittee meetings and any trustee away days.

What are we looking for?

We are looking for people who want to help their local community and work towards the eradication of food poverty. Our ideal candidates would demonstrate:

• an understanding of, and commitment to, the work of the Middlewich & District Foodbank
• a knowledge of, and passion for, fundraising and grant application writing
• an ability to lead on any fundraising and grants matters in a supportive and confident manner
• experience of liaising with business and corporate partners and the development of fundraising relationships
• excellent communication and collaboration skills
• the ability to engage with others and be part of a team, as well as being organised and motivated to complete tasks independently
• willingness to actively participate in discussions concerning needs of the foodbank’s beneficiaries, staff, and the trustee board
• the ability to listen and engage with people from a diverse range of backgrounds and experiences
• willingness to act in the best interest of the charity
• sound, independent judgement and ability to think creatively
• working effectively as a team member and demonstrating a willingness to learn and develop.

It is not necessary to have previous board experience as training and support will be provided. This role could support someone taking their first steps to develop wider board level and governance experience

Why we need you

Casework triage volunteers help our caseworkers manage demand at our partner day centres by welcoming people, and assessing what issues they need support with. They then signpost people to other services where appropriate, help them access the day centre facilities, and help caseworkers to prioritise the most pressing guest needs.

When and where

Our partner day centres at the Ace of Clubs, HTB, the Upper Room, and Chelsea Methodist Church all have casework triage volunteers, who volunteer on the same day each week, usually for a 3hr shift.

What experience do I need?

It's the perfect volunteering role if you:

· Have some experience directly working or volunteering with vulnerable people,

· Are confident, friendly, and can think on your feet,

· Want to dedicate half a day weekly to volunteering in a frontline service.

RSPCA Barnsley & District Branch – Trustee (Treasurer)
Help us improve the lives of animals in our community

The RSPCA has been protecting animals since 1824 and remains the UK’s oldest and largest animal welfare charity. Our Barnsley & District Branch works locally to:

• Rescue, rehabilitate and rehome animals rescued from cruelty and neglect
• Provide subsidised neutering and emergency treatment for pets in need
• Support local food banks with donated pet food
• Run two successful charity shops to fund our work, supported by volunteers

The role of a Branch Trustee

Branch Trustees are volunteers who govern the charity, ensuring we are well-managed and making a real difference for animals. As Treasurer, you will play a key role in overseeing our finances, helping us operate effectively and sustainably.

Responsibilities include:

• Acting as the link between our accountant and the trustee board
• Attending monthly trustee meetings (usually online, 90 minutes on the 2nd Wednesday evening)
• Preparing and reviewing relevant financial documents for meetings
• Supporting decision-making with financial insight

Who we’re looking for

We welcome applications from people of all backgrounds, especially those with local knowledge. You don’t need prior trustee experience—training and induction are provided.
We are particularly seeking someone with financial knowledge (ideally charity finance) who is enthusiastic about animal welfare and keen to use their skills to make a positive impact.
