Crossness Pumping Station (overseen by the Crossness Engines Trust) is a unique and valuable museum of UK and world reknown telling the history of how the ambitious management of sewage transformed London as a city of growth and innovation in the 1860s and helped eradicate cholera. Preserved and restored by a group of enthusiasts since 1987, we are now entering a second phase of major restoration and we need visionary trustees who can help us achieve it.
This role is one of three we have created for experts in their field to help us implement a major programme over the next 5-10 years. It really is your chance to be part of our history!
As well as the usual trustee roles (outlined in the role description attached) the specific skills needed for this role include:
Role Objectives
- Acting as lead expert on the Board in relation to management of Crossness as a heritage asset.
- Advising on regulatory and policy issues in heritage buildings and assets.
- Ensuring high standards of achievement in all aspects relating to Museum Accreditation including Building restoration, Collections and Archives.
Responsibilities
- Liaising with the Restoration, Archives and other relevant teams including developing work plans.
- Overseeing funding requirements in major grant applications.
- Being part of the Building Condition Survey sub-group.
- Liaising with volunteers and suppliers on developing work plans and ensuring their completion.
- Contribute to financial and business plans to achieve the heritage asset goals of the Trust.
Candidate requirements
Essential
- Experience working in a senior heritage management role.
- Excellent understanding of the needs of heritage assets and the roles of volunteers and staff in their management.
- Understanding of key stakeholder networks and sources of information useful to the Trust.
- Excellent communication skills including with staff and volunteers as well as fellow trustees.
- An understanding of the importance of collaboration and problem-solving.
- Confident and proficient in the use of MS Office 365.
- Commitment to attend board meetings regularly and volunteer for other sub-committees as appropriate.
- Able to devote around 2-3 hours per week on preparing for meetings.

The Bristol Carers Service supports adult family members, partners, and friends of adults living with mental health conditions. The service is delivered by a Service Coordinator and a Hospital Liaison Worker, as part of the wider Rethink Bristol Community team.

About The Role
Volunteers are integral to the running of our London reserve and without their help we wouldn’t be able to maintain this amazing 105 acre wetland of international importance, with views across to the City. Our volunteer team are friendly, motivated and hard-working and say they benefit by gaining new experiences, meeting new people and most importantly making a difference by helping maintain important wetland habitat.
Maintaining and managing a large wetland nature reserve requires a lot of practical, hands on physical tasks. With first-class training and guidance, you’ll be part of a small and dedicated Tuesday Reserve Support team that cares for a variety of breeds in all weathers, to help tell our conservation story. Your role will be to provide regular support to the reserves team in all practical reserve management, to maintain habitats, increase species biodiversity and ensure the reserve and grounds areas are functioning at their best for our visitors.
You'll be an essential part of the WWT team. You'll get a warm welcome, including information on training, equipment and anything else you need.
Due to the nature of and training for this role, we ask for a commitment of a minimum of 6 months volunteering.

About You
This an ideal role for someone who has a can-do attitude and are happy to help us in all weathers, being both a practical person and physically fit. Having experience in some habitat management would be helpful, but a keenness to learn is more important. It’s a closely-working team, however, the ability to work under your own initiative and being self-motivated is also needed. Having, or being happy to develop, the confidence to engage our visitors with the work of WWT is also a key part of this role. Main tasks include:
- Assisting with all practical reserve management activities including scrub clearance, pruning, pollarding and fencing
- Supporting staff and other volunteers with the construction and maintenance of island scrapes, ditches and reed beds, ensuring that reserve water bodies are maintained and managed appropriately (boat use may be needed)
- Operating agreed machinery safely in order to carry out management activities
- Assisting with the construction and maintenance of access routes to the bird hides including the maintenance of fences, footpaths and hides
- Working with a variety of hand tools safely and correctly, observing and applying health and safety regulations at all times
- Taking due care for the safety, welfare and enjoyment of the visiting public
- You may be asked to undertake related ad hoc tasks

Job Summary
The Graphic Design Volunteer will play a key role in supporting our marketing and communications team by producing high-quality digital and print content. You’ll contribute to everything from social media visuals and web graphics to campaign logos and video editing. If you’re creative, detail-oriented, and excited about trans empowerment, this is a great opportunity to build your portfolio while supporting a vital cause.
Key Responsibilities

Design graphics and visual assets for use across print, web, and social platforms.

Assist with maintaining and updating our website and blog (WordPress).

Help develop and adapt branding materials, including logos and campaign identities.

Collaborate on creative assets for events, awareness campaigns, and fundraising initiatives.

Support the creation and editing of short-form video content.

Maintain version control on design collateral.

Participate in creative brainstorming sessions and contribute to the visual direction of campaigns.

Assist with additional creative and administrative tasks as assigned.
What We’re Looking For
Skills & Competencies:

Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign; Premiere Pro is a plus).

Experience with WordPress for website edits and updates.

Strong written and visual communication skills.

Understanding of design for both digital and print formats.
