We believe in the power of teaching English to enable migrant workers to build community, secure their rights, and live successful and fulfilling lives in London. We have a developing rhythm of regular and occasional worship, building partnerships with others across London, as well as new activities such as English classes.
We are looking for a volunteer ESOL Teacher for our free Saturday morning beginner class.
Working closely with the Outreach and Mission Co-ordinator, Kitty Lyons, and alongside other staff and volunteers, you will teach our English Language Classes with particular responsibility for the development of Beginner Level learners.
Coventry Cathedral is a living breathing space which welcomes worshippers, tourists, audiences and school children daily from near and far, either visiting or looking for a place of sanctuary. We have daily worship, and events taking place all year round, a busy tourist offer and a thriving education programme. All these activities are housed in the building coined the “new cathedral” built in 1962. The Cathedral is also custodian of its predecessor- a 12th century building, destroyed and ruined in the Blitz during Nov 1940. The site and story have risen to international recognition, becoming a symbol and example of reconciliation.
During 2023 the Cathedral (along with other English cathedrals) became a registered charity. This has seen changes made to our governance and this requires reinforcement and support as new processes become our normal way of working.
The Finance, Audit & Risk Committee (FAR) is a sub-committee of the Chapter (the board of trustees), and the chairperson of FAR is a member of Chapter. The committee has a membership of five non-executives, and meetings are attended ex-officio by the Dean of Coventry, the Chief Operating Officer, and the Chief Financial Officer.
In order to fulfil the duties and responsibilities of the committee, members should be able to operate at a senior and strategic level, with experience of working (either paid or voluntarily) in an organisation at least at a middle management level. The ability to deal with figures and understand financial implications of decisions is essential, as is the ability constructively to challenge plans, reports and outline business cases before they progress for decision to Chapter as required.
FAR Committee schedules 10 meetings per year, but may meet less frequently with monthly reporting being provided by the finance team each month. Meetings usually last 1.5 – 2 hours. Members may be asked to assist with more time, for example when new auditors are due to be appointed, or when a challenging financial or audit issue emerges.
From an analysis of existing committee members, the Nominations Committee has identified the following skills and qualities as being really valuable to bring into the committee. If you do not have these specifically, we would still be interested to hear from you as the make-up of the group will continue to change and different skills may come to the fore.

About the role
The Chapter body is the custodian of the Cathedral and its precincts, and we are dedicated to the care and conservation of these wonderful assets, so they may enrich lives for centuries to come.
As a non-executive member of Chapter and trustee, your role will be critical to the leadership of the Cathedral.
As a member of Cathedral Chapter, the Chair of the Finance Committee will work strategically to support Chapter in ensuring good financial oversight and will work closely with the Chief Operating Officer and Chief Finance Officer to enable the effective financial management of the Cathedral. This will include developing a financial plan to align with any revised strategy, overseeing effective governance, budget planning, information management and reporting. In addition, this role has oversight of the Cathedral’s investment portfolio.
The Chapter is the Board of Trustees for the Cathedral, a registered charity, and has the ultimate responsibility for directing and overseeing its affairs – as a place of worship and a community of service, as a significant building and a heritage site of remarkable beauty, as a venue for events and as a globally recognised destination for pilgrims and visitors.
Members of Chapter come from a variety of backgrounds and seek to work collegially in their leadership and responsibilities as they take forward the ministry and mission of a Cathedral which has been servicing Wells and the County of Somerset for almost 850 years.
The objects of the Chapter are:
a) to advance the Christian religion in accordance with the faith and practice of the Church of England, in particular by furthering the mission of the Church of England;
b) to care for and conserve the fabric and structure of the Cathedral Church building;
c) to advance any other charitable purposes which are ancillary to the furtherance of the purpose referred to in sub-paragraph (a) or (b).
Who we are looking for
With considerable background in finance as either an executive leader or leader of a specialist finance function, the next Chair of the Finance Committee and Chapter Member will be committed to working with the other members of Chapter as they develop the strategy and plans to bring the mission and vision of the Cathedral to life.
They will understand the role of good governance and shared leadership in a complex organisation and will be able to contribute to the wider agenda of the Cathedral as well as lead on finance.
They will have wisdom and kindness in their leadership and enjoy motivating and developing the team around them. People from all areas of the organisation will find them approachable as they stretch thinking and share ideas.
They will be committed to learning and growing with other members of Chapter and personally as the Cathedral develops into its newly established charity status.
The ability to untangle complex figures and interpret them to others who may not be financially minded is key in this role. A strong financial background is essential, together with the ability to challenge and assimilate views to operate collegially whilst being mindful of the Cathedral environment and governance requirements.
Non-executive members of Chapter will be communicant members of the Church of England, or of a church with which it is in communion. Across the UK, our 270 local groups play a vital part in supporting people affected by MS. They provide sense of belonging, unity and friendship. And they deliver services and support for their local MS community.
We are looking to recruit a Support Volunteer for the Leamington Spa, Warwick and Kenilworth Group. As our local group Support Volunteer you’ll help people affected by MS find information about local and national services. In this role you’ll be able to develop your listening and communication skills, as well as your knowledge of local services. Most importantly you’ll help people affected by MS to access the help they need.
Time commitment
We estimate this role will need around 2 hours a week. Our roles are flexible and aim to fit around you. Time commitments for this role may vary depending on your activities. This is an ongoing role.
This is a great opportunity to gain experience within a large charity and develop your existing skills and learn new ones. We need you to get involved and help make positive changes to the lives of people affected by MS.
About you
You’ll have an interest in the MS Society and the work that we do, as well as the enthusiasm to represent both us and our values locally. You will understand the needs of people affected by MS in your area and be sympathetic to the needs and motivations of volunteers. You’ll be confident using Microsoft Office, the internet and email. Solidarity Circles for Disability, LGBT+, Racial Justice, and Women were launched in September 2023 as part of the Strategy for Justice, Dignity and Solidarity. We hope to start 2 new Solidarity Circles – one for Carers and one for Rural Communities in September 2024.
Solidarity Circles are online meetings for the Methodist Church to support people in different diversities of the Church’s life to meet regularly, to support one another and to raise with relevant Church leaders the concerns that need to be addressed. These circles act as consultative groups for the work of the Methodist Church and are supported and led by a volunteer coordinator.
Each Solidarity Circle is formed of up to 15 members who are appointed for one, two or three years with up to five new members recruited each year to ensure a diversity of views and experience are heard.

Key Responsibilities:
1. Plan and execute the Community Engagement and Racial Harmony strategy and service line:
• Cultural Events and Dialogue: Lead the creation of a flagship calendar of events designed to elevate the cultural and social quality of the community. This includes organizing a successful annual cultural festival with a diverse range of activities that celebrate and raise awareness of Afro-Hebrew heritage.
• Art and Media Collaborations: Develop and implement a series of collaborative art and media projects that involve community members, fostering racial harmony and showcasing the community's creativity and stories.
2. Measure performance: Keep accurate count of thenumber of cultural events held annually; the number of attendees to cultural events; the community participation rate in art and media projects.
