It Gets Better UK is at an exciting moment. Over the past six years, we've grown from a grassroots initiative into a charity reaching millions of LGBTQ+ young people across the UK. Through digital storytelling, educational resources, and community engagement, we're combating isolation and discrimination – ensuring every young person knows their power and worthiness as individuals.

About the Role
Background
Our outgoing Chair, Dale Graham, has supported GoodWork since its inception as a Community Interest Company through to our transition to a registered charity in July 2025. Following a successful three-year tenure, Dale stepped back at the end of 2025 and Abu Sayed is serving as Interim Chair while the Board recruits externally for a new Chair of Trustees.

Strategic leadership and governance
- Ensure GoodWork delivers effectively against its strategy, mission and charitable objectives. GoodWork’s existing Board and team are in the process of developing a new three year organisational strategy, which we expect to finalise in early 2026.
- Uphold robust governance proportionate to our scale, ensuring compliance with Charity Commission expectations and all legal and regulatory obligations.
- Lead Board stewardship of risk management, safeguarding, impact and evaluation, fundraising and financial oversight.
Board leadership and effectiveness
- Lead and inspire the Board, ensuring it functions as a high-performing, inclusive and collaborative team.
- Chair quarterly Board Meetings and the annual Away Day, ensuring clear agendas, effective decision-making and constructive challenge.
- Support the development of Trustees through periodic 1:1 check-ins (1-2 per year), enabling continuous improvement, accountability and a positive Board culture.
- Ensure Board succession planning, diversity and capability to meet the charity’s evolving needs.
Executive support and accountability
- Build a strong, supportive and constructive partnership with the CEO.
- Facilitate monthly 1:1 meetings with the CEO, providing guidance, challenge and mentorship.

External engagement and advocacy

What we're looking for:

We live in challenging times - cost of living increases mean many students are balancing work and study, higher education funding is under pressure, major domestic and international events increasingly concern, or directly impact upon our students. The Students’ Union plays a vital role in helping and supporting our diverse student membership and their elected representatives to navigate these challenges.
Queen Mary Students’ Union (QMSU) represents the interests of over 31,000 students drawn from over 170 nationalities (approximately 43 per cent from overseas) at Queen Mary University of London. Queen Mary is a Russell Group university and describes itself as ‘a leading research-intensive university with a difference’.
Of our domestic undergraduate students, 91 per cent are from state schools, 77 per cent are BAME, and 46 per cent are the first in their families to enter into higher education. Queen Mary has the best record of all the Russell Group universities in England for recruiting undergraduate students from state schools and from lower-income families. The Students’ Union provides social, cultural, recreational, and sporting opportunities for our students, helping them to develop the skills they need to succeed in life after university.
The Students’ Union is a registered charity and is overseen by a Board of Trustees. It has overall responsibility for the management and administration of the Students’ Union, including its governance, budget and strategy. In its last accounting year, the Students’ Union had a turnover of over £7.8m (including our wholly owned trading subsidiary, Queen Mary Students’ Union Services Ltd).
The Board of Trustees is made up of six elected Officer Trustees, six elected Student Trustees, and six External Trustees. Day-to-day management of the operation and administration of the Students’ Union is delegated by the Trustees to the Chief Executive Officer.

Time commitment: Up to 1 day per month.
Board meetings are held 4 times per year during the working day. They are held in person, last half a day and are normally at our ReStore site in Romford. Ad hoc meetings, online and in person, may also be scheduled.
Trustees may also be asked to join either the Finance, Audit & Risk subcommittee, or the Strategy & Development subcommittee, which also meet 4 times per year, normally online.

Who we are looking for:
We are looking to recruit up to 5 new Trustees. We are particularly looking for the following experience:
· Finance management (experience of audit, impact investment or charity finance would be helpful).
· Legal (experience of charity law would be helpful).
· People - HR, EDI, Culture, Safeguarding.
· Brand, marketing, PR and media.
· Any experience of our strategic areas: the wider housing sector; local or national political, policy or service delivery; charity retail.
· Fundraising and partnerships.

Key Responsibilities:
· Prepare for, attend in person and actively contribute to board meetings and share in decision making about all significant issues that impact Habitat GB.
· Chair or serve on at least one committee if invited, each meeting online four times a year. Either the Finance Audit & Risk Committee, or the Strategy & Development Committee.
· Set Habitat GB’s strategy and ensure its delivery.
· Scrutinise Habitat GB’s performance and hold leadership to account.
· Visit a Habitat GB programme, activity, Global Volunteering Build or shop at least once a year.
· Act as custodian of Habitat GB’s values and long-term future and ensure good governance.
· Represent Habitat GB externally, be prepared to open up your network and act as an ambassador.
· Ensure legal and regulatory duties as a Trustee and Company Director are fulfilled.
· Fulfil the expectations of the Charity Commission or any other relevant regulatory body.
· Engage in any induction, training or upskilling activities required.

The Bird of Prey project is seeking new Trustees to join our Board and help guide the next phase of our growth and impact. We welcome applications from candidates who are committed to actively supporting us in our mission to restore habitats, conserve birds of prey and make wildlife education accessible to all.
The Bird of Prey Project is a multi-award-winning visitor attraction and registered charity in Bath, Somerset. Our visitor centre is home to 22 resident birds of prey and owls, and we run multiple conservation and education programmes. Our dedicated team works tirelessly to advocate for wild birds of prey and the ecosystems they live in, as well as to improve the welfare of raptors in captivity in the UK.
We are particularly keen to hear from candidates with experience in:

Commitment:
The Board of Trustees meets six times a year, usually in the evening, at or near The Bird of Prey Project, Newton St. Loe, Bath. Attendance via video conferencing is also supported. We also assist over 40 support groups helping abandoned animals in Ukraine.
