Level the Playing Field in Development (LPFDev)

Level the Playing Field in Development (LPFDev) is a volunteer-led community challenging harmful narratives and practices in the global development sector through a decolonial lens. By addressing entrenched colonial structures, LPFDev advocates for equity, anti-racism, and decolonisation approaches that move beyond theory into practical solutions. The initiative fosters collective intentionality within the development community, creating safe spaces for open, candid dialogue while promoting more inclusive and just practices. Volunteers are welcomed with openness and creativity, encouraged to contribute their skills, learn collaboratively, and help reshape development into a field rooted in fairness, dignity, and shared global responsibility.

Content Creators (Writers, Videographers, Photographers, Graphic Designers)

Beyond Aid Narratives an initiative created by Level the Playing Field in Development (LPFDev) to shift traditional aid narratives about Africa. The mission of the initiative is to highlight African excellence, innovation, and cultural richness by amplifying authentic African voices and stories rooted in local agency, changing the way the global development sector views Africa and, to ultimately shape programming, communications and fundraising. We foster education and reshape perceptions through compelling storytelling and vibrant visual content.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and deliver engaging content aligned with Beyond Aid Narratives’ pillars
• Produce authentic first-person stories, photo essays, videos, and Reels
• Collaborate with the LPFDev team to maintain consistency with posting schedules, brand style, and community engagement strategies
• Contribute innovative ideas and help grow an engaged audience interested in genuine African narratives

Specific Roles:

1) Writers/Storytellers: Create narrative and educational content, scripts for video storytelling, and compelling social media captions centered on African perspectives

2) Videographers/Editors: Capture and edit dynamic videos for Reels, IGTV, and Stories emphasising real African experiences and achievements

3) Photographers: Provide striking images for galleries, photo essays, and posts highlighting Africa’s beauty and diversity

4) Graphic Designers: Design visually appealing infographics, carousel posts, and educational visuals that simplify complex topics and engage the audience

Skills & Qualifications:

• Strong passion for African development, culture, and positive representation aligned with LPFDev’s vision
• Proven skills and experience in your creative discipline (writing, video, photography, design)
• Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and collaborate remotely with a diverse team
• Familiarity with Instagram and social media best practices is an advantage
• Commitment to authenticity, respect for African narratives, and cultural sensitivity

Location: Nottinghamshire - we hope our Trustees have a deep understanding of local people. Our Board meetings and AGM take place in person (with the exception of the January meeting which is online).

Responsibilities within the role:

• To ensure Age UK Notts is accountable 

• To ensure our purpose and work is carried out for the public benefit 

• To ensure compliance with our governance code and any relevant obligations

• To act in the best interests of the charity, and maintain the professional integrity of the charity, when dealing with stakeholders, other bodies and individuals

• To manage the charity's resources responsibly 

• To act with reasonable care and skill

• To safeguard the good name and values of the charity

• To act as an ambassador for Age UK Notts and for the wider Age UK network

• To safeguard the good name and values of the charity

• To have a positive commitment to, and actively promote, Age UK Notts’ Equality Diversity and Inclusion policy

• To act as an Ambassador for the charity and the wider Age UK network

What is the time commitment? 

The charity holds four full board meetings per year in Nottingham, with each meeting lasting around 2 hours. Meetings take place quarterly on the third Thursday of October, January, April and July.

In addition, Trustees need to set aside a minimum of 2 hours reading time before each board meeting.

. The AGM follows the board meeting on the third Thursday of October, with the meeting lasting around 1.5 hours. In addition, a minimum of 1 hour reading time is required prior to the AGM.

• There may be specific occasions when a Trustee is required to attend an event to open/close it, such as our annual staff conference

• Get to know the charity’s services and infrastructure within the first 3 years/initial tenure of the post and continue to have contact with relevant departments during subsequent 3-year tenures. Feedback on service/infrastructure visits is a standard Board agenda item.

. The charity board also has a Finance & Audit Committee which has its own Terms of Reference and has meetings separate from the Full Board Meetings. The membership of this committee is determined by the Board

• Trustees serve a three-year term of office and can be re-elected to serve additional three-year terms

What training will you be given?

We offer a full induction programme and ongoing support from the charity, other Trustees and the Senior Leadership Team plus occasional external development.

Who we're looking for:

The Trustee role is open to all those who are either a trained lawyer or who has a strong legal background and in addition, the Board of Trustees particularly welcomes experience in one or more of the following areas:

• Issues relating to work with, and for, older people or lived experience and potentially any of the following skills.
• Legal Skills
• Fundraising
• Public Relations and Marketing
• Campaigning
• Education and Learning
• Digital Strategy
• HR
• Strategy and planning skills and performance monitoring in commercial and/or not-for-profit organisations
• Developing and monitoring budgets

We particularly welcome applications from diverse communities and are looking for people from a wide range of backgrounds to join our board and contribute towards leading the charity and delivery of services to the older people of Nottingham and Nottinghamshire.

• The role of a Trustee is voluntary and is not accompanied by any financial remuneration, although expenses for travel may be claimed

The Role of Trustee

As a trustee, you will:

• Ensure the charity is well run and compliant with charity law.

This is a voluntary role (reasonable expenses can be covered). Trustees meet around four times a year digitally, with additional input between meetings as needed.

Volunteering for Sense

Our amazing team of volunteers help us run over 100 shops across England and Wales.  Every donated item that you sort, prepare and sell helps to raise vital funds to support us in our mission to make sure no one, no matter how complex their disabilities, is isolated, left out, or unable to fulfil their potential. Our shops are at the heart of local communities – sharing the work of Sense, and helping to secure support for our life changing work.

What your role will involve

There are a variety of tasks that you can get involved with in the shop, including:

• Welcoming and assisting customers, providing great customer service and a fantastic shopping experience
• Receiving donated goods from members of the public
• Sorting, steaming, tagging and preparing donated goods for sale
• Creating eye catching window and in-shop displays
• Keeping the shop floor well stocked, tidy, clean and organised
• Processing sales and serving on the till
• Promoting Gift Aid and other Sense fundraising initiatives
• Acting as an ambassador for Sense; promoting the shop and Sense in your local community
• Supporting with the recruitment and training of new volunteers
• Following new health and safety measures to ensure the safety of everyone

URBAN YOUTH

Location: Fully flexible / Remote – open to applicants anywhere in the UK
Time Commitment: Approx. 2–6 hours per month, including quarterly trustee meetings, occasional sub-committee meetings, and fulfilling trustee responsibilities. Time may vary slightly depending on organisational needs, but remains manageable alongside other personal and professional commitments.

About Us
Unseen Expeditions UK is a newly forming Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) supporting mission-led charities and expedition projects across the UK and internationally. Our flagship initiative, The Unseen Mile, is a 4.5-year journey covering 25,000 miles across 37 countries. Through this and future projects, we aim to inspire communities, raise awareness for important causes—including mental health—and share unique storytelling and learning experiences from the field.

We are currently recruiting our initial board of trustees to help launch and register the charity.

Role Overview
We are seeking a Chair / Trustee to lead our board, provide strategic direction, and ensure effective governance. The Chair will guide the charity through registration and early operations while supporting the delivery of its mission.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the trustee board and ensure effective governance

• Chair board meetings and oversee decision-making

• Support trustee recruitment, induction, and development

• Act as a primary contact for stakeholders and regulators

• Oversee compliance with charity law and CIO regulations

• Assist with reporting to the Charity Commission

• Help guide the charity through its registration and initial set-up

Person Specification & Requirements

• Strong leadership, organisational, and strategic skills

• Familiarity with charity governance and trustee responsibilities (training can be provided)

• Commitment to the mission and values of Unseen Expeditions and its partnered charities

• Ability to work collaboratively with a small, remote trustee team

• Comfortable working remotely and communicating online with a UK-wide board

• UK-based (required for legal trustee responsibilities)

• 2–6 hours per month commitment (more during start-up if possible)

• Basic tools for communication (email, phone, video calls)

• Are you over 18 and living in the UK? You must be over the 18 years of age and live permanently in the UK.
• Do you have a mobile phone or laptop? You can do this role whether you are, whether it be on a sofa or on a plane.
• How much time can you give? As much as you want to do. We are flexible and like to work around you.
• Do you like to learn? We provide training for all volunteers that join us. You'll have access to our courses to help you advance your knowledge and certificates to add to your CV.

How does it work?

In 2025 we launched our arm chair volunteering initiative to help us spread the word about our service and to give people the opportunity to take part in surveys and projects to help us deliver the best mental health support to the UK public.

We'd like to embrace what you love doing, whether that be sharing on socials, proof reading, surveys, sharing experiences or getting involved in our fabulous projects.

Important information:

In order to volunteer for knus as an ambassador, you will need to complete a brief application form and a ID check. A DBS is not required for this role, however, if you wish to progress to another role you may need a disclosure. We do this to ensure of service remains a safe place to volunteer for all. Please do not worry about this, we will help you as much as we can.

Training is provided by us and our training partners. You will be required to attend this training using online conferencing software such as zoom or teams.
