Job description

We thank you for the interest you have shown in Doorstep Library.  Due to COVID-19 we have made some changes to our volunteer recruitment process.  We are continuing to recruit volunteers during this period and hope that all new volunteers will be fully trained and out on projects soon.  In response to the Government’s recommendations all Information Sessions will be held digitally via Zoom.  Please do register your interest by selecting a date which suits you and we will be in touch with instructions on how to join the session online.  We look forward to seeing you very soon!

Doorstep Library is a literacy charity that believes in the power of words to take children places, not just in their imagination, but in their lives. We want to see a world where all children can thrive in homes in which books are celebrated and a love of reading is embraced.

Lockdown is accelerating educational inequality at an alarming rate but the problem is much bigger than the last few months. Four in every ten children in London live in households in poverty. We have been fighting inequality in education since 2010, introducing the magic and benefits of reading, to more than 1,300 children.

We recruit and train volunteers to go into some of the most disadvantaged areas in London to help introduce young children (0-11 years old) to the pleasure of reading. Doorstep Library's unique home-based services means we are there in person, finding the most appropriate books for every child we visit and building a relationship with the whole family. Our projects not only improve literacy and confidence in children, but they increase family wellbeing and bonding through the joy of sharing stories. Our impact is long-lasting. Our volunteers encourage both parents and children to read for pleasure together from a young age. This kind of tailored support enables us to help prepare children for school and broaden their opportunities in life.

We run projects on MondayTuesday and Thursday afternoons in estates across Westminster.

The areas include:

  • Queen's Park
  • Pimlico
  • Marylebone
  • Edgware Road

We are still recruiting volunteers during this period and aim to have all new volunteers fully trained and out on projects soon, helping those who are most in need. In the interim we are developing e-visits. We will continue to equip children living in London’s most deprived communities with essential literacy skills, confidence and a love of reading to break the cycle of poverty, now in this crisis and in the future.

Apply now to attend one of our monthly Information Sessions to find out if volunteering with Doorstep is the right move for you! Applicants must be 18 and over
