Job description

We have three trustee vacancies and are looking for proactive individuals with professional or lived experience of the support families need when a child has a mental health difficulty, along with some experience of the charity or business sectors.

Who we are

Parenting Mental Health was set up by Suzanne Alderson after her teenage daughter became depressed and suicidal. It began as a Facebook group in September 2016, with a goal to connect and support parents of children with poor mental health. Since then it has attracted over 23,000 active members.

Using digital channels and programs Parenting Mental Health now empowers, skills, and supports tens of thousands of parents to successfully navigate each stage of their child’s mental illness, and to become stronger and more resilient families.

We registered as a charity in 2020 and are at an exciting stage in our development.

We have three trustee vacancies and are looking for proactive individuals with professional or lived experience of the support families need when a child has a mental health difficulty, along with some experience of the charity or business sectors.

PMH is a positive caring organisation. We are non judgemental and treat our members with kindness and understanding. We also like to get things done, and want to offer practical support and services to the parents in our community.

Board members need to be able to attend a remote board meeting every 4-6 weeks, as well as at least one in person meet-up (this may be a strategic planning meeting, annual general meeting, or a volunteers meeting - we are planning to run one or two each year). Board meetings usually take place in the evening.

We also ask board members to take on 3-4 hours work on behalf of PMH in between meetings. This will be agreed in advance, in line with the PMH workplan and any priorities that arise. We are particularly interested in attracting members who have solid experience of two of more of the skills and attributes listed below.

• Governance and Leadership

• Legal responsibilities and statutory duties

• Evaluation and impact

• Diversity and inclusion

• Financial management

• IT and data protection

• Experience of serving on a charity board

• Strategic planning

• Fundraising from trusts and charities

• Fundraising from donations and appeals

• Evolving community members in the charity

• Consulting with members and liasing with member led subgroups

• Understanding of mental illness

• Understanding of the mental health system

• Lived experience of supporting a child or young person with poor mental health

• Working directly with vulnerable people

• Recruiting and managing volunteers

• Employing staff

• Developing ideas into projects

• Project Management

How to apply

Please write a supporting statement of no more than 2 sides of A4 outlining the relevant skills and experience that you would bring to the PMH board. If you have a CV please submit that as well.

The closing date is 5pm on Monday 28 February.
