The role of the board is to govern Breaking Barriers effectively, in service of our vision and mission, and as required by our constitution. Trustees provide support and challenge to the Chief Executive and Senior Leadership Team (SLT), and are ambassadors for the charity.
Essential Duties of the Trustee Role
· Ensure Breaking Barriers is carrying out its purposes for the public benefit
· Comply with Breaking Barriers' governing document and other laws that apply
· Act in Breaking Barriers' best interests: prioritise Breaking Barriers' objectives, avoid conflicts of interest, and follow procedures to manage any conflicts.
· Ensure Breaking Barriers is accountable: meeting legal, accounting and reporting requirements
· Manage Breaking Barriers' resources responsibly: managing risks, protecting assets and people, getting the resources we need, having appropriate controls and procedures
· Act with reasonable care and skill using your skills and experience, deciding when you need professional advice, ensure Breaking Barriers remains solvent.
Other Responsibilities
· Understanding the vision, mission, goals and values of Breaking Barriers together with a good grasp of the operational context and the expectations of partners.
· Strategic leadership and vision: help to guide the organisation with a strategic vision, aligning the board and staff's efforts with the mission. Ensure that the organisation defines its goals and evaluates performance against agreed targets.
· Leveraging opportunities: Support and participate in fundraising strategies, leveraging networks, and engaging with donors and stakeholders to secure necessary resources for the organisation's work.
· CEO and SLT support: Maintain a constructive relationship with the CEO and SLT,
creating a positive and strong working relationship to jointly set and achieve appropriate targets, staying in regular contact and acting as a sounding board to discuss strategic or staffing related matters, issues - coaching, supporting and challenging as necessary.
· Ambassadorship: Act as an ambassador, representing and promoting the organisation's mission, values, and interests to external stakeholders, enhancing its reputation, and fostering collaboration, fundraising and promotional opportunities

The Story Museum is looking for three people to join the Board of Trustees due to existing long-serving (and brilliant!) Trustees coming to the end of their terms. In this round of recruitment we are actively seeking individuals who bring specific skill-sets and experiences from within the legal, fundraising or education sectors.

Treasurer to help arts charity to expand
We are seeking a Treasurer to provide strategic financial oversight at a pivotal moment in IOU’s development. This is a key governance role, working to ensure the organisation's sustainable growth.

IOU Creation Centre is cultural engine for artistic experimentation where radical ideas are tested, made real and released into the world to turn imagined futures into reality.
We exist to get radical artistic ideas into the world. Rooted in Calderdale and reaching far beyond, we back artists to disrupt expectations, imagine futures and make ambitious new work experimenting with art, engineering, technology and landscape to transform people and places.
What will you be doing?
IOU is entering an exciting and transformational period as we approach our 50th anniversary in 2026 and continue the transition from a nationally recognised producing arts company into IOU Creation Centre — a new model centred on artist development, interdisciplinary making, creative technology, engineering, and community participation.
We are seeking a Treasurer to join our Board at a critical and ambitious point in the organisation’s development. Over the last few years, IOU has successfully diversified its business model through the creation of IOU Hostel Ltd, our trading subsidiary, which provides earned income, artist accommodation, and residency opportunities alongside our charitable activity. We are now undertaking important work to strengthen financial systems, reserves, governance structures, and long-term sustainability across both organisations.
Our Board is currently made up of trustees with experience across the arts, fundraising, governance, education, HR, and strategic development. We work collaboratively and closely with the executive team, and pride ourselves on maintaining a supportive, open, and thoughtful culture while also constructively challenging the organisation as it evolves.
The Treasurer will play a key strategic role in helping shape IOU’s next chapter. This includes supporting oversight of:
- financial planning and reporting
- reserves and cashflow management
- governance and financial controls
- the relationship between the charity and trading subsidiary
- longer-term organisational resilience and sustainability
The Treasurer will also chair our Finance Committee, which meets monthly online and works closely with the Executive Director and Finance Manager to review management accounts, budgets, risk, and financial planning before recommendations are made to the wider Board.
This is a particularly exciting time to join IOU. Alongside our 50th anniversary programme and major Heritage Lottery funded archive project, we are developing new partnerships, artist residency models, and approaches to cultural participation rooted in Calderdale and the North of England. We are also exploring how the Creation Centre can become a nationally distinctive rural centre for contemporary interdisciplinary art and making.
As a trustee, you would have the opportunity to contribute to real organisational transformation — helping shape how a small but ambitious cultural organisation builds a resilient future while continuing to take creative risks and support artists and communities.
We are especially keen to hear from people who enjoy working strategically and collaboratively, and who are excited by the challenge of supporting an arts organisation that combines creativity, social impact, entrepreneurial thinking, and cultural ambition.
What are we looking for?
We are looking for a Treasurer who shares our belief in the value of arts, culture, and creativity as tools for social connection, experimentation, and positive change. We are particularly interested in someone who can combine strong financial insight with a collaborative and strategic approach to governance.
Our ideal candidate will have professional experience in finance, accounting, business management, or financial leadership, and be confident supporting a small but ambitious organisation through a period of development and transformation. Experience of working with charities, social enterprises, cultural organisations, or trading subsidiaries would be valuable, although not essential.
We are especially looking for someone who can:
- understand and oversee financial reporting, budgeting, cashflow, creative tax credits, reserves, and risk
- support the Board and executive team with strategic financial planning
- help ensure robust financial systems and controls are in place
- communicate financial information clearly to trustees and colleagues from non-financial backgrounds

- chair our Finance Committee and help strengthen financial confidence across the organisation
As IOU operates both as a charity and alongside a trading subsidiary (IOU Hostel Ltd), experience of mixed-income models, social enterprise, hospitality, or commercial trading would also be beneficial.
We value trustees who are thoughtful, open-minded, and interested in how organisations evolve. We are not looking for someone purely transactional or corporate in approach; we are looking for someone who understands how good governance can support creativity, people, and long-term resilience.
We are also committed to improving representation within our governance and leadership. This will support trustees from a range of professional backgrounds to engage more actively in financial discussions and governance.
Beyond finance, your support will help enable IOU to continue delivering ambitious artistic and community programmes across Calderdale and beyond. This includes artist residencies, workshops, touring work, heritage and archive projects, environmental initiatives, and opportunities for people who may not normally engage with arts and culture.

About the Role
Our Board of Trustees provides strategic leadership and strong governance, helping to shape Earthwatch’s direction and impact. Trustees act as ambassadors for our mission, bringing diverse perspectives and expertise to guide our work.
The Board meets four times a year, usually for full-day meetings on a Friday, held either in person or online via Microsoft Teams. Meetings usually take place in London or Oxford. Two standing committees — Finance (meets quarterly) and Nominations (meets twice a year) — provide additional oversight. We also form ad-hoc working groups as needed, typically involving staff and trustees, to support strategic priorities or to manage the organisation through a challenging process.
Earthwatch Europe has a board of 12 trustees. Trustees come from a wide variety of backgrounds and have a wide range of skills and experience, including governance, science, communications and finance. The Chair of the board is supported by two Vice Chairs and an Honorary Treasurer.
Role Purpose
To lead trustee-level oversight of Earthwatch Europe’s financial governance, ensuring robust controls, clear reporting, sound risk management and strong financial decision making that supports long-term sustainability and impact.
Key Responsibilities
• Provide strategic oversight of budgets, management accounts, cashflow, reserves and forecasting.
• Ensure strong controls, compliance and risk management (including audit where applicable).
• Chair or help shape the Finance Committee.
• Support the Board to understand financial trade-offs and sustainability choices.
• Help shape the financial foundations for income growth (e.g., investment cases, risk/return thinking, sustainability modelling).

We would also welcome applicants who bring:
- Broader expertise directly associated with at least one of CSE’s work programmes (fuel poverty advice and support, housing energy retrofit, community action on energy, local net zero delivery, future generations, or fairness in the energy system)
- Understanding of the causes and impacts of fuel poverty, and the solutions required to tackle it
- Knowledge of the UK energy system, including the policy and regulatory environment, and the transition to a fairer, more flexible, decarbonised energy system
- An understanding of the national policy environment underpinning CSE’s work, including experience of influencing national energy policy

What are we looking for?
We are seeking candidates with a personal or professional passion for driving these improvements, who can bring relevant skills and experience to help shape our work. ● Attend one in-person Board Strategy Away Day each year (usually following one of the in-person Board meetings)
● Attend the one-hour Annual General Meeting in autumn each year
● Consider joining one of our sub-committees, with up to four online meetings each year.
The roles are voluntary (unpaid). We reimburse reasonable expenses necessary for attending meetings and taking part in Genetic Alliance UK activities.
Most of our trustees are sponsored by our member organisations. If you have a connection with one of the charities in our alliance or the conditions they support, please mention this on your application.

We are seeking to recruit a Trustee with expertise in major donor fundraising to join our Board.

The Role
As a Trustee you will share collective responsibility for the governance, strategic direction and sustainability of Encephalitis International.
We are particularly seeking someone who can bring experience and insight in major donor recruitment, retention and stewardship to support the charity’s development and fundraising ambitions.
You will:
- Provide strategic guidance on major donor and philanthropic fundraising
- Help strengthen our approach to donor engagement, stewardship and long-term relationships
- Support the development of sustainable income streams and fundraising strategy
- Act as an ambassador for Encephalitis International and its mission
- Contribute to Board discussions and decision-making
This role is strategic rather than operational, though trustees may occasionally open doors, make introductions or support relationship-building where appropriate.
What We Are Looking For
We would particularly welcome candidates with experience in:
- Major donor fundraising or philanthropy
- High-value relationship management
- Philanthropic giving within the charity, corporate or private sectors
- Developing or advising on major gift strategies
You may have gained this experience through work in the non-profit sector, philanthropy, corporate leadership, wealth advisory, or as a major donor yourself.
We are also particularly keen to welcome candidates from under-represented groups.
Previous trustee experience is not essential.
Time Commitment
- Approximately 4–6 Board meetings per year (usually virtual) and one in-person away-weekend.

We are one of the largest local Citizens Advice charities in England, helping more than 14,000 people each year with issues including debt, housing, welfare benefits and fuel poverty. For over 80 years we have been a trusted source of free, independent advice for the people of Coventry — and demand for our services has never been higher.
This is a genuine governance role. You will provide leadership to the Board, ensuring that Fair Ways is well governed and puts child protection and health & safety front and centre of its agenda. You will be strategically focused and committed in supporting Fair Ways in delivering against its charitable objectives. Working in close partnership with the Chief Executive you will ensure that the Board operates effectively, maintains high standards of governance, and provides appropriate support and constructive challenge to the executive team.
As the Chair of Trustees for Fair Ways Foundation, you will be responsible for:
- Strategic Leadership - Leading the Board in setting and overseeing the organisation’s vision, mission and strategic direction. Ensuring alignment between strategy, business plans and organisational performance. Promoting long-term sustainability and impact ensuring Fair Ways acts in the best interest of its people, promoting diversity and inclusion for all.
- Governance and Compliance - Ensuring that the organisation operates in accordance with its governing documents and relevant legal and regulatory requirements, including those of the Charity Commission for England and Wales. Overseeing financial stewardship, ensuring appropriate scrutiny of budgets, audit and financial reporting. Ensuring effective systems of risk management, health & safety, child & employee wellbeing and internal controls are in place and regularly reviewed and maintaining oversight of safeguarding as a core organisational priority
- Board Leadership and Effectiveness - Chairing Board meetings effectively, enabling balanced participation, constructive challenge and clear decision-making. Ensuring the Board operates within its agreed governance framework and delegated authorities. Leading the ongoing development of the Board, including Trustee recruitment and succession planning, Induction and development of Trustees, regular evaluation of Board effectiveness and appraisal of the CEO and through them the Executive. Promoting a Board culture that reflects the organisation’s values and commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion
- Chief Executive Support and Oversight - Developing and maintaining a strong, open and constructive relationship with the Chief Executive. Providing support, guidance and appropriate challenge. Leading the Chief Executive’s appraisal and performance review process. Ensuring clarity of roles between governance and executive & operational management, maintaining appropriate boundaries
- External Representation - Acting as an ambassador for Fair Ways as appropriate, supporting stakeholder engagement and organisational reputation.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Ensuring that Board decisions are implemented and appropriately monitored
- Working with the Chief Executive and Company Secretary to set Board agendas and annual cycles of business
- Ensuring Trustees receive timely, relevant and high-quality information to support decision-making
- Facilitating open communication and effective working relationships across the Board and executive
Required Experience:
- The Chair of Trustees must demonstrate significant experience of serving as a Boards, including at least one role as Chair of Trustees or as a Board member operating at executive or equivalent senior governance level.
- Board experience at a senior level within the charitable, statutory or commercial sectors
- Demonstrable experience of setting and delivery of strategies at board level
- Experience of applying good governance to Charity or commercial Boards
- Ability to proactively engage with all stakeholders both internal and external at a senior level ensuring professional boundaries relationships
Successful candidates will be required to provide an enhanced Disclosure (DBS). This disclosure cost will be met by Fair Ways.
Your commitment:
This role is offered a voluntary position (reasonable expenses reimbursed), with a commitment of approximately 30–40 days per year, including:
- 4 Board meetings per year (full day)
- Preparation and review of Board papers
- Regular meetings with the Chief Executive (typically fortnightly)
