At Acorns we provide care and support for life limited or life threatened children and their families. We are a charity, and our fundraising is vital to enable us to continue providing care and support to the children: it costs around £13 million a year to run our care services.

Join us as a Reception Volunteer at our Black Country Hospice in Walsall!

As an Reception Volunteer you'll be:

• Greeting all visitors, ensuring they sign in securely, feel welcomed and are passed over to the appropriate staff member
• Taking phone call messages to pass on to staff
• Signing post enquiries to the correct department
• Assisting general administration duties such as filing, scanning or checking stock deliveries
• With additional training taking donations and completing appropriate paperwork 

How much time will it take? 

We are looking for volunteers who are available to cover Thursdays at 2:30 pm till 5.00pm

We are also seeking volunteers who can work weekends only, with flexible hours. Please specify your preferred weekend shift on the application form.

We have a variety of exciting retail opportunities available at the Acorns Children’s Shop in Moseley.

At Acorns, we provide vital care and support for children with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions, and for their families. As a charity, most of our services are funded through fundraising and the incredible work of our shops.

To help us continue delivering this essential care, we’re looking for enthusiastic and friendly volunteers to join our team in the Moseley shop. Our shops are vibrant and dynamic places to be — no two days are ever the same! From greeting customers and receiving donations to creating displays and helping with sales, there’s always something rewarding to do.

We’d love your help! Volunteers are needed Monday to Friday, and we’re also looking for key volunteers to help us run the shop on Sundays.

As a Shop Volunteer with us, you will be:

• Engaging with customers
• Accepting and sorting donated stock
• Pricing donations for sale
• Working on the till

Our shops are open Monday to Saturday (some open on Sundays too) 9am to 5pm.  You can volunteer the hours that suit you, but it would be great if you could support in the shop for at least 3 hours a week.

To help us to continue to provide the care that we do, we are looking for fun and enthusiastic volunteers to join us in our Cotteridge shop. Our shops are exciting and dynamic, with no two days being the same. From our walk-in customers, to receiving donations, and everything in between

As a Lead Shop Volunteer with us, you will be:

• Supporting the daily operation of the shop and stepping up to run it when needed.
• Delivering outstanding customer service and creating a warm, welcoming experience for every visitor.
• Guiding and supporting our amazing volunteers, offering direction and encouragement.
• Handling cash and completing banking tasks — full training provided, of course.
• Getting creative with merchandising, ensuring our displays always look their best.
• Maintaining high standards of housekeeping and helping with the smooth, day-to-day running of the store

Through supporting the growth of community partnerships, you will bring people along to our cause, growing our membership and fundraising base and spreading the message that First Aid Saves Lives. 

Through volunteering as a Community First Aider, you’ll get a huge sense of satisfaction and pride delivering an essential service. It’s great for you, great for your community and great for our nation, and it requires only a small commitment of your time. 

We will make sure you will have access to a proper induction to volunteering with SJA and the training you need for the role you take on. Network meetings are held on Wednesday evenings between 19:30-21:00 during school term time although these are normally reduced to twice monthly in winter. It is important for applicants to generally be able to attend meetings.

Interviews will be held around similar times to the regular meetings on Wednesday evenings in Heanor.

Induction evenings will be held at same time and location as the regular meetings and an existing volunteer will provide direct support as a Buddy.

As well we online training, in person training will be provided. In person training is usually over one weekend.

Job Title: EPAfrica Summer Team – Project Manager (PM)
Location: Kakamega, Kenya
Duration: Approximately 1st July – 13th September 2026, with limited flexibility on start and finish dates.
Start Date: UK-based training and preparation begins in June, with travel to Kenya for final pre-summer preparation in late June.

About EPAfrica

EPAfrica (Education Partnerships Africa) is a volunteer-led charity working in partnership with rural secondary schools in East Africa. Our focus is on a win:win approach to skills development and capacity building. We recruit, train and support graduates in the UK to develop leadership and project management skills, while working in partnership with rural schools in East Africa to create sustainable improvements in education by investing in people, resources, infrastructure, and local capacity. Project Managers play an essential role in this work, engaging directly with schools, developing a strong understanding of the local context, and supporting meaningful, long-term projects.

Our volunteers work closely with schools to co-create solutions that enhance educational quality and expand opportunity for young people.

Role Overview

As a Project Manager, you’ll be a central leader within EPAfrica’s Summer Team. You’ll oversee Project Associates in their school placements, deliver high-impact training, coordinate programme delivery, and act as a key link between our UK team and our in-country projects. It’s a dynamic leadership role that blends operational management, pastoral care, and strategic decision-making.

Most importantly, you will help develop future global leaders, guiding PAs through experiences that shape their confidence, judgement, and understanding of international development.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Management

• Directly manage volunteers in-country, including Project Associates and the coordinator team.

• Lead Project Associates through their summer placements, offering guidance, structure, and motivation.

• Build strong partnerships with schools, managing expectations and setting boundaries for accommodation, travel and other logistics. This can include discussions around finances, travel and dietary requirements. 

Training & Capacity Building

• With the support of coordinators, deliver training on project management, risk management, cultural awareness and responsible international capacity building.

• Create a psychologically safe and collaborative space for all volunteers and facilitate reflective discussions that strengthen leadership, critical thinking, and cross-cultural understanding.

Pastoral Support

• Act as the first point of contact for PA wellbeing, helping volunteers navigate challenges and thrive during their placements.

Programme Oversight

• Monitor project progress and help PAs resolve operational issues.

• Ensure investments align with EPAfrica’s mission and theory of change.

Monitoring & Evaluation

• Conduct school visits to assess impact and gather data for future decision-making.

• Visit potential partner schools and support long-term organisational learning.

Risk Management

• Respond to in-country issues with maturity, calm, and strong judgement.

Coordination & Communication

• Maintain clear and constructive communication with the UK charity team and local partners.

What We’re Looking For
