Who we are.
Set up in 1994 by local people, BEA/OWLS is a community-based charity with a community interest company called UpBEAt, which runs Bramley Community Shop. In 2011, we set up Older Wiser Local Seniors (OWLS) to provide the Neighbourhood Network Service in Headingley, Burley, Hyde Park and parts of Kirkstall. We currently have around 1,500 members.
With a small staff team and 200 volunteers, we work with a range of partner organisations, both voluntary and statutory, to improve health, increase happiness, and reduce social isolation and loneliness in older people.
At a strategic level, we seek to influence local and city-wide policy development as active members of the community and Leeds’ third sector. We share good practices whilst at the same time learning from others.
Our strategic aims are to:
- Increase membership of the charity and the happiness of our members.
- Be more effective and efficient.
- Further engage our members, volunteers and staff, and ensure that we remain sustainable as an organisation.
About the roles.
The Chair of the Board will manage Board meetings, support the Chief Executive and ensure that the Board of Trustees is well-inducted, managed and developed to be effective and efficient in its governance responsibilities.
Committee Chairs will bring their HR and Finance experience to strengthen the technical capability of our committees. As well as Chairing the Committee Meetings, Committee Chairs will lead the strategic development of key finance and people issues.
Other people who want to be Trustees, regardless of background, will help to maintain oversight of the financial health and sustainability of the organisation and ensure that our resources are managed in a way that achieves the charity’s objectives.
Who we are looking for.
First and foremost, we are looking for local people committed to helping older people live happy lives in our community. A willingness to invest the time and effort in delivering for local older people is important to us.
Specifically, we are looking for a Chair of the Board who is ambitious for the organisation, is comfortable building a good local profile and can develop influential relationships with partners and other stakeholders. The Chair will run the Board meetings, support and constructively challenge the Chief Executive and continue to drive Board Member engagement and effectiveness.
We are looking for Committee Chairs with specialist backgrounds in finance and HR to lead the Money Committee and People Committee.
We are open to the other backgrounds of people who wish to put themselves forward as Trustees.

STAMMA is a small, award-winning charity with big ambitions working with a brilliant community keen to create space and respect for people who stammer.
Many people who stammer face daily ignorance, discrimination and disrespect. This can affect job prospects and mental health and cause social isolation. It can make a GP appointment a nightmare, stop you from accessing a service altogether and leave you feeling disbelieved. STAMMA is here to change that.
We have embarked on a new three-year strategy – Space to Stammer, to achieve real and practical change for people who stammer and showcase the inadvertent barriers they face. We aim to create a culture where consideration for people who stammer is akin to checking for wheelchair access; it is something to be thought about when it comes to every day like oral exams, customer services, booking GP appointments, online banking, or even being a parliamentarian. Our campaigns are about changing perceptions and have been award-winning and life-changing, and include Make GP Bookings Accessible, It’s How We Talk, No Diversity without Disfluency and campaigning against the Apple suggestion of the Woozy face emoji when the word ‘stammering’ is typed.
We want to reach more people who stammer and grow our base but to do that, we need to expand our training and advocacy services and underpin our whole range of support services, hence, we need to build our income streams.
We believe we’re on the cusp of creating real and long-lasting change for people who stammer. With this, this is a great time to join and lead our board as Chair.
About the roles.
Our new Chair
As our previous Chair, Joanna Gaukroger, stepped down due to illness, we are looking for a new Chair to lead our Board. It is vital that our new Chair shares our passion for creating a world that makes space for stammering, where a stammer is embraced as just a difference, and no one judges a stammer or how someone deals with it. Our new Chair will bring governance experience, be commercial and drive our strategy with our Chief Executive to continue our organisation’s development, including ensuring sustainability. Our new Chair will be committed to making a meaningful impact, foster engagement and strategic thinking.
Our new Chair will work with our ambitious board and executive team to ensure our organisation continues to be innovative and sustainable and champions the rights of those we support. We envisage our Chair as an inclusive leader, ensuring all voices are heard. Our new Fundraising Trustee
In addition to our new Chair, we are looking for a new Trustee who will bring skills and experience in strategic fundraising. Our new Trustee will have senior leadership experience with fundraising experience, particularly around individual giving, corporate partnerships, and major donor fundraising. Our new Trustee will share our excitement and ambition for change. We are looking for someone who can support us build our fundraising strategies and provide sound advice and challenge.
Time Commitment
The Board meets 6 times a year including an annual general meeting and our national conference – STAMMAFest. Meetings are usually held on a Saturday for 2 – 3 hours online and 4 – 5 in person. 3 of these meetings typically take place online, and 3 can take place in person in different locations across England, including London and Manchester.
We also have several committees; Trustees usually join one sub-committee. Our committees include the Finance Committee, the Fundraising Committee, the Research Committee, and the Membership Committee. Our new Fundraising Trustee will join our Fundraising committee.
We expect the time commitment for the Chair to vary. On average, we would expect the equivalent of c.2 days a month, spread across various activities such as preparation for board meetings, reading board papers, regular conversation with the Chief Executive, ad hoc discussions with board members and the executive team, and attending events throughout the year. The time commitment of our Fundraising Trustee would be the equivalent of a day a month.

Unfold does governance differently. An award winning charity, we are led by the people we serve, with inclusive, participatory governance structures which have twice been short-listed for excellence in the Charity Governance Awards.
Unfold (previously known as Westminster Befriend a Family) is an established local charity that gets people where they want to be. Powered by volunteers, we support children, young people and families with one to one mentoring and peer support groups across Westminster and Kensington and Chelsea. We have a dynamic, committed, open and friendly board, and we're seeking two new trustees to join us, bringing skills and experiences from the not-for-profit or public sectors.

Management Reporting
- Ensure that a high standard of management accounting is maintained.
- Liaise with the Chair of the Finance Committee to guide the HoFO in the preparation and production of high quality management accounts to the Board.
Statutory Financial Reporting
- Ensure the finalisation of statutory financial accounts by the HoFO in line with charity regulations and statements of recommended practice and the completion of the external audit process. Assist fellow trustees to formally approve the Trustees’ Annual Report and Annual Accounts
Reserves Policy
- Review the reserves policy.
Keep the Board informed regularly of the free reserves position and advise on strategies for coping with changing circumstances.
Governance and Financial Control
- Ensure that proper accounting records are kept, financial resources are controlled, invested and economically spent in line with governance, legal and regulatory requirements.

About The Role
As a small volunteer-run charity, we anticipate the role would take up an average of 1-2 hours a week, although this may increase during busier periods for the SPA, such as around our National Conference.

YOUR COMMITMENT
Whilst the Trustee Board meets for formal meetings 6 times a year, successful candidates will be expected to contribute to the organisation more widely, taking part in fundraisers, external events, strategic planning and advising the staff team when needed. What will you be doing?
We are looking for people to join our board of trustees to help take Cheltenham Almshouses and Aid forward. We would particularly welcome those with experience of building maintenance and development of new properties, health and safety, finance and investment, risk control, social care and marketing.
Many of the properties we own are of older stock and there is a constant challenge to keep the buildings well maintained and up to standard, in line with health and safety requirements whilst providing comfortable and affordable living.
We have recently built four new wonderful apartments within a conservation area and may possibly in the future look at extending our current stock of properties with more new builds.
We have a healthy balance sheet and would look to new trustees to guide the charity with new investment opportunities.
At present we have little presence on social media and would welcome a trustee on board who could help us in this field and ultimately give us the presence we so need. By maintaining a wait list this reduces the risk of void apartments and subsequent decrease in income.
We provide housing to many people who are working but cannot afford the market rents, for those retired who want to live in well maintained, peaceful communities. Some of our beneficiaries may need help with more personal matters such as benefit applications, liaising with social services, the clerk will deal with these aspects directly but additional knowledge of areas such as benefits and pensions would be immensely valuable to our beneficiaries, some of whom may not have any family members nearby to support them.

We are looking for new Trustees to join our already very talented board.
What will you be doing?
Cintre are a local charity with over 40 years’ experience providing, residential care, supported living and community-based support for adults with complex mental health needs, learning disabilities and autism spectrum disorders. Cintre delivers services primarily in Bristol, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset.

What we are looking for…
We are looking for a Trustee with Health and Social experience and expertise to join our Board of Trustees.
You will be required:
- To advise and guide the Board on health and social care issues.
Ideally you should have:
- Knowledge and understanding to maintain an oversight on the charity's activities at a strategic level with an interest in advising on health and social care.
- A good current understanding of charity framework in the UK;
- An interest and commitment to Cintre’s mission and objectives; and,
- A willingness to act as the charity’s ambassador to external bodies, charities and companies.
What are we looking for?
- Experience in a Health and Social Care setting would be ideal, specifically in providing guidance to ensure that services can be compliant.
- Experience with working with the Care Quality Commission and an understanding of the regulations.
- Safeguarding Adults experience would be greatly valued, with the ability to share knowledge and provide support to ensure that the vulnerable adults we are responsible for are fully protected.
- Knowledge to assist the charity in delivering Outstanding Care to our Service Users
- An understanding of the challenges faced by our service users who live with Autism or a Learning Disability.

- Working in collaboration with trustees, the CEO, and the Senior Executive Team to oversee the development of the long-term strategic plan
- Review delivery of the annual plan to achieve funding & project objectives
- Research broader networks, potential partnerships & stakeholders to support the charity's strategic goals and funding requirements
Working with the CEO
- Develop a productive working relationship
- Agree their annual objectives and provide support and oversight to deliver them
Acting as a representative of the charity
- Be an ambassador, developing our network with decision makers and other stakeholders as appropriate
