The Role

Christian Aid is seeking to appoint a new Finance Trustee to bring significant charity finance experience to the Board and strengthen its oversight of financial matters. The Finance Trustee will play an important role in supporting good governance and strategic decision-making, helping ensure that Christian Aid’s financial resources are managed effectively and sustainably.

Working alongside fellow Trustees and the executive team, the Finance Trustee will provide constructive challenge and independent judgement, helping the Board understand financial performance, risks and opportunities. They will ensure that financial information is clear, accurate and meaningful, and support Trustees from a range of professional backgrounds to understand its implications for Christian Aid’s work and long-term sustainability.

The Finance Trustee will:

• provide constructive challenge and independent judgement on financial matters
• ensure financial information presented to the Board is accurate, timely and meaningful
• help the Board understand key financial issues, risks and opportunities
• support effective decision-making by clearly communicating financial information and its implications.

The Person

Essential knowledge and experience

• A recognised accounting qualification.
• Significant charity finance experience.
• Knowledge of the governance obligations and responsibilities of Trustees.
• Experience of financial oversight, including management accounts, cash flow, forecasting and financial reporting.
• A good understanding of financial reporting, management accounts, cash flow, forecasting and financial risk.
• The ability to identify key financial and organisational risks and communicate these clearly.
• An understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship.
• The confidence to provide constructive challenge while maintaining positive and collaborative relationships.

Desirable knowledge and experience
It would be desirable if candidates also had experience in some of the following areas:

• Knowledge of the workings of NGOs in the UK and Ireland.
• Knowledge of the social, cultural, economic and political dimensions of international relief and development.
• Experience in an international organisation.

• Experience gained outside the charity sector that complements charity finance and governance.

Role Description

Our Organisation

Womankind Worldwide is a global women’s rights organisation working in partnership with women’s rights movements and organisations to transform the lives of women and girls. We strengthen and support women’s movements in our focus countries in Africa and Asia, and take collective action at regional and global levels, to ensure women’s voices are heard, their rights are realised, and their lives are free from violence. Womankind Worldwide is a UK registered charity.

Overall Purpose

The Finance and Resources Committee Member supports Womankind’s Honorary Treasurer and Board Members in relation to Finance, People and Culture, Risk and Resources, across jurisdictions.

The Finance & Resources Committee Member works alongside the Honorary Treasurer and other Committee members, bringing independent expertise, scrutiny and constructive challenge to help ensure Womankind remains financially sustainable, accountable, compliant and aligned with our feminist and anti-racist values.

The Finance & Resources Committee Member is not a member of Womankind’s Board of Trustees and does not carry trustee responsibilities.

Our Vision is: A world where all women, girls and people of all genders enjoy equal rights and freedoms and live with joy, choice and dignity.

Location: We are a Hybrid organisation and the Finance and Resources Committee meets online. We are registered in the UK and Kenya and have flexible working spaces for our mainly remote team in Nairobi and London.

Time commitment: The Finance & Resources Committee (FRC) meet 4 times per year. Members are expected to read papers in advance and may occasionally attend additional ad-hoc meetings with the Honorary Treasurer or Director of Finance, People & Culture. The estimated time commitment is 6-8 days per year.

Start Date: December 2026.

Duration: 3 years.

Salary: This is an unpaid voluntary position. Reasonable expenses/per diems for travel and subsistence whilst on Womankind business are reimbursable.

Support: The Finance & Resources Committee Member is supported by The Honorary Treasurer, fellow Finance & Resources Committee members and by a staff team comprising: Director Finance & People & Culture, Manager People, Culture & Wellbeing, Co-CEOs and Leadership Support Manager.

Specific Responsibilities

1. To contribute to the Finance & Resources Committee to fulfil its governance responsibilities.

• To work with the Honorary Treasurer in ensuring satisfactory systems and processes for holding monies or property in trust, for use in line with the organisation’s charitable objects.

• To work with the Honorary Treasurer to ensure that where appropriate monies are invested to the greatest benefit of Womankind, within the constraints of the law and ethical investment practices.

2. To ensure that Womankind Worldwide is meeting its obligations and that financial management is line with good practice.

• To work alongside the Honorary Treasurer in ensuring that Womankind operates within the legal and financial guidelines as set out in current legislation and its own policies in the UK and Kenya.

• To work with the Finance & Resources Committee on oversight of the following areas:

• ensuring that Womankind has adequate financial controls in place that are being practised and that the organisation operates within a sound financial framework.

• in management identifying financial risks and recommending appropriate action.

• ensuring appropriate reserves policy and management.

• financial implications and risks of Womankind’s strategy and policy objectives.

3. To provide oversight that Human Resources Policies are developed and delivered in line with organisational values, good practice and legislation in the UK and Kenya.

• To work with the Finance & Resources Committee on oversight of organisation human resources policy:

• ensuring that Womankind designs and implements human resources policies and procedures which are fit for purpose in relation to organisational strategy and values as well as relevant legislation.

• ensuring that terms & conditions are equitable across jurisdictions.

• holding management to account for timely development and review of policies appropriate to nature of the risk, in line with agreed schedules.

• to support identification of human resources risks and recommended actions.

4. To contribute to feminist and values-led governance

• To bring a feminist, anti-racist and power-conscious lens to financial, people and organisational decision-making.

• To consider how decisions about resources affect staff, partners and other stakeholders.

• To contribute to an inclusive governance culture grounded in accountability, transparency and collective decision-making.

Person Specification

Qualification and training

• Recognised full qualification in accounting and / or qualification by experience.

Experience and Knowledge

• Solid experience of leadership in relation to finance, human resources and risk management in organisations operating across multiple jurisdictions.

• Track record of facilitating and scrutinising development and delivery of finance and human resources strategies

• Excellent understanding of not-for-profit finance and relevant financial legislation in the UK

• Good understanding of international issues and the current challenges facing UK NGOs working internationally, including in relation to coloniality

• Leadership qualities with high integrity and ability to foster inclusive and collective decision making.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Who are we?

We are Buttons & Bubbles C.I.C. We work to increase inclusion and representation across society for the disability community.We have several different services including inclusive characters, sensory workshops, resources, events, advocacy and more.

What are we looking for?

Are you looking for a volunteering opportunity that you can do in your own time and without having to leave the comfort of the sofa? Do you have a good imagination? Are you interested in graphic design? Or have an artistic flair?

We have a range of creative projects and tasks and our creative team have more work than people. We are particularly interested in speaking to people with video editing skills. As well as people who are interested in campaigns or being part of the activity pack team. 

What do we expect?

• Be willing to undertake our training programme which will be done virtually and at a time to suit you.

• Sign our volunteer contract. (If you disagree with anything in it please do discuss it with us and we will be happy to have a conversation and make small changes if appropriate).

• A positive attitude to disability and illness. We are happy to answer questions on this.

• A community group that does not currently operate a rota system of any kind. Youdon’t have to regularly commit your time.

Rebuild with Hope was established in 2021 and began supporting people facing multiple barriers to employment. From our humble beginnings we have seen continued and exciting growth which has allowed us to further develop and expand our support programmes alongside the opening of several retail outlets, high street stores and a community hub and café.

Our additional retail stores are in Runcorn (two stores), Earlstown, Kirkham, Thorn Cross and Wrexham. Our mission is to support those facing multiple barriers to employment by providing mentorship, employment opportunities and holistic support. Rebuild With Hope provides opportunities and delivers comprehensive support making transitioning back to work as smooth as possible.

We offer training, volunteering, work experience and progression to real work opportunities, coupled with wrap around support to foster independence, promote self-esteem and provide hope for people when they need it most. Employment and volunteering opportunities continue to help us support communities with the ongoing and ever challenging cost of living crisis.

Overview

The Rebuild with Hope Foundation is a fast growing and impactful charity supporting those facing barriers to work. Due to our continued growth we are looking to increase and diversify our Board membership. We are looking to appoint Trustees, no former experience is required as training will be provided. We are also looking to appoint a Treasurer a long with an experienced Chair of the Board. There are separate recruitment packs for each of the three roles, with each outlining the different knowledge and experiences required .

As Trustee you will help steer the charity towards achieving its mission. This vital role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to meaningful community initiatives, support sustainable growth, and foster positive relationships with stakeholders. As a Trustee, you will play a key part in shaping the charity’s future, ensuring accountability, transparency, and effective governance. This paid position invites passionate individuals eager to make a lasting difference through dedicated service and innovative thinking.

Role Description

Board Members are jointly and severally responsible for the overall governance and strategic direction of the charity, its financial health, probity of its activities, developing the organisation’s aims, objectives, and goals in accordance with the Constitution, legal and regulatory guidelines. All Board Members should be aware of and understand their individual and collective responsibilities and should not be overly reliant on one or more Members in any aspect of the governance of the charity.

Chair Specific Duties

• Rebuild with Hope operates within the law, and according to its constitution and its commitments to stakeholders and is adequately resourced to meet its commitments.
• Rebuild with Hope develops an effective strategy in line with the core values of the organisation
• All Board Members are fully involved in discussions and decisions, and the contribution of individual Members is monitored. The Chair will encourage group decision making, teamwork, and a sense of shared purpose, and will foster a sense of inclusivity and shared mission by informing the Board at each meeting of any ‘Chair’s business’ which has taken place since the last meeting
• The Board’s agenda is appropriate and focuses on the key strategic issues, all planned business is dealt with in an equitable, fair manner and a conclusion is reached in each case, and that decisions are clearly and accurately minuted
• The Board continually monitors Rebuild with Hope’s progress, and that Board Members have regular, timely and relevant information on strategic and financial issues and key risks
• Board Members have a proper knowledge and understanding of their roles and responsibilities
• The Board delegates, as appropriate, to its Committees and to its Chief Executive
• Regular reviews of Board, Committee and Chief Executive performance are undertaken, and a programme of development processes for the Board, its Members, and the Chief Executive is established
• Periodic reviews of the composition and workings of Rebuild with Hope are undertaken to ensure it continues to respond appropriately to changes in the wider environment
• Effective use is made of the Board’s time within, and between, meetings
• The Board receives professional advice when necessary
• The support and commitment of Rebuild with Hope’s partners and key stakeholders are developed and sustained
• They represent Rebuild with Hope as required and foster positive relationships with a range of stakeholders. The Chair will ensure that a high profile is maintained for the organisation, and that stakeholders are kept informed of our work
• Positive working relationships are maintained among Board Members and with the Chief Executive to enable an appropriate balance of challenge and support to be provided 

Duties

• Ensuring the charity complies with legislative and regulatory requirements and acts within the confines of the Constitution and its charitable objects.
• Acting in the best interest of the charity, beneficiaries, and future beneficiaries.
• Promoting and developing the charity to help it grow and maintain its public benefit.
• Maintaining sound financial management and control of the charity’s resources.
• Ensuring a fully effective and appropriate system recruitment, for appointment the and monitoring of the work and activities for the CEO and Senior Management team.
• Ensuring the effective and efficient administration of the charity and its resources, striving for best practice in good governance.
• Maintaining absolute confidentiality about all aspects of Trustees’ business
